The Euboea Region
Evia is the second largest island of Greece. It is located near the Eastern coasts of Central Greece from which it is separated by the Evian (or Euboean) sea that in its narrowest point in Evripo has a width of almost 40 meters.
It is an island with many beauties, generally unspoiled, with beutiful clean beaches, forests, rivers and a wonderful climate.
Chalkida, the island's capital, is accessible from an exit on the main Athens- Lamia(Central Greece) highway.
The ancient city was a renowned trading center, which established several colonies and contained famous temples dedicated to Zeus, Apollo and Hera.
The archaeological museum in the town contains notable exhibits. The Byzantine basilica of Aghia Paraskevi, located within the compound of the mediaeval fortress, contains coats of arms and inscriptions of the 14th century.
The modern town has several hotels and its restaurants specialise in fish dishes.
The main motor highway, which traverses Northern Evia, goes past Nea Artaki, dotted with tavernas, which serve fish food as their speciality. Nearby is the church of Faneromeni.
Psachna, an attractive village close by, is the gateway to the hinterland of Northern Evia.
Politika is right next to Psachna with its Byzantine church of the Theotokou.
The picturesque fishing village of Politika is located at the south part of the island, 25km away from Chalkida. The village is located right next to the sea, next to the beautiful forest of Profitis Ilias.
In the middle of the village, the visitor can admire the imposing Venetian castle dating in the 13th century. The small square is the meeting point for all locals. There, visitors can enjoy their coffee under the shade of the tall trees.
The beaches are nice for swimming and relaxation with crystal clear waters.
DAFNI (where the villa is)
As the road begins to climb, the country becomes more wooded with cypress trees, pine trees, olive trees and firs.
Just a few km away from Politika is the village Nerotrivia, on top of the hill, called also the balcony of the Evian Golf, named after its beautiful view of the golf. A few minutes away, driving towards the sea, there is Dafni, the most famous little settlement in the area, well renowned for its beautiful beaches and stunning natural surroundings. The pine trees, the sycamore trees and the olive trees extend to the pebble beaches, offering shadow during the hot summer days. The crystal clear waters refresh the visitors and make swimming a wonderful experience early in the morning or under the continously changing colors of the sky at sunset!
Our house is located just on the beach!
In the area there is a small super market and a local tavern with fresh fish. The tavern is situated over a beautiful beach, where the waters of a small river meet with the sea under the shadow of sycamore trees.
