The Poitou-Charentes region
The region is south of the Loire Valley and parts of the Poitou-Charentes are reckoned to have the most sunshine hours a year in France outside of the Mediterranean. This is the garden of France.
The summer days are generally quite long, warm and sunny, though you can expect a few rainy days too, while the autumns are usually clear and bright. The winters can get cold the further inland you go, but they don’t last long, and you can often expect a warm spell in March or even February.
The food and wine in the area are exceptional. It’s home to cognac, refreshing muscadets (spectacular with oysters), cabernet franc from Chinon and Bourgueil & Saumur. The Loire Valley boasts particularly fine white wines.
The region is equally and rightly noted for its great local delicacies too – for example cheese, honey, poultry, butter and snails – as well as fine restaurants, hotels, cafes and bars. The area around Richelieu was once the centre of truffle production in France and is enjoying a resurgence with over 100 hectares planted.
Then there is the sheer variety of things to do and see in the Poitou-Charentes, such as leisure parks, golf and beautiful towns and villages. One of the pearls of the Vienne department is the capital town of Poitiers, a town steeped in history, and whose old streets are buzzing with life thanks to its large student population. The Vienne boasts a lot of great places to visit, including the internationally-known Futuroscope theme and leisure park, the Crocodile Park, Snake Island and the Valley of the Monkeys.
On top of these tourist attractions there are many other fine places to see such the many beautiful local chateaux, the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Abbey of Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe and its beautiful frescoes, and the market town of Chauvigny, with its impressive hilltop ruins and bird of prey centre known as the Géants du Ciel.
There are local markets within an hours drive just about every day of the week. From local produce markets, to livestock, to truffles - there is something for everyone in the immediate vicinity. Lencloitre is the nearest local town with 3 great boulangeries, a fantastic produce market every Saturday and a bigger livestock market on the first Monday of each month. There is a very well stocked supermarket where you can get just about anything you need. It is around 10 minutes down the road, only slightly closer than Mirebeau which is also very well serviced.
If you venture a little further afield into the South Loire, the beautiful Château de Chenonceau is around one and a half hours drive north, as is Château de Villandry - easy day trips. Other beautiful towns in the South Loire include Richelieu, Saumur, Chinon, Tours - all well worth a visit for their spectacular buildings and amazing histories.
