Location description from owner

The Puglia region

In a surprising small 15th C. borough close to the best sea villages, the B&B La Tana del Riccio is a most charming Guest House for rental hidden in the heart of Salento, in southern Italy, a boutique vacation home where you'll feel back in the '60's. Vaste's Beauty- Vaste di Poggiardo is a little jewel, postcard type of a Salento village with just 650 souls, hidden orange and tangerine gardens. In 600 BC was a messapic capital: remains are visible at the Museum by the “Piazza” and at the archaeological site, a 20 acres open-air museum. Located at the gates of Poggiardo, Vaste is rich of quite small streets, baroque palaces and church, and gets lively in the fresher hours when people will gather and sit in the main Square benches, chatting and enjoying the freshly baked pastries. At any other time you will hear only the sound of the singing birds and the ringing of the church bells signing the passing time or calling the functions. Culinary traditions stay true to the time in this region, fresh bread is delivered daily warm, orecchiette the traditional pasta of Puglia are handmade served on broccoli rabe, and with the abundance of olive trees around you, you can bet the quality of the extra virgin olive oil has not changed. The town is built around a main square of rare beauty, where the church, and the Baronial palace and Tower, all from the XIV and XVIII centuries, are linked by a defense wall that hides a small 14th century borough. The scenery is enhanced at night by a specially designed illumination. The evocative and perfect picture perfect Salento style hamlet of Vaste can be reached crossing an opening of the walls, passing a beautiful mandarin and orange garden: walking thru the alleys, there will be a small square with a door highlighted by a stone arch and a coat of arms. You have arrived. This is the entrance to the “Tana del Riccio” but also the beginning of your discovery of the pleasant lifestyle of Salento, of its bright sun, the large range of turquoise of its sky and sea waters, its stones and rocks, its flavors of a great and traditional cuisine, and its intoxicating beauty of the Baroque architecture. The strength of the olive trees and the ancient, or the swing of the winds from the south or the north, will make you wish to come back well before it is even time to leave.

Poggiardo

Within short distance from the B&B Guest House Salento La Tana del Riccio, a luxury villa in southern Italy, there are several accesses to the beautiful coast on the Adriatic or Ionian seas, providing rocks and deep waters, to sandy and shallow beaches. Only 3 to 6 km far away from the most beautiful and famous villages on the Adriatic coast; Castro, Porto Miggiano, Santa Cesaria with her renowned thermal spa, open nine months of the year. A short distance beyond, another two jewels; Porto Badisco and Otranto, all of them along one of the most beautiful coastal roads in Italy, connecting Otranto to Santa Maria di Leuca. The home for rental truly enjoys a strategic location, in the heart of Salento that also provides close access to the main road which allows you to be less than a half hour from Lecce, Otranto, Gallipoli, and S.M. di Leuca. We suggest exploring the variety, and sharing with us your favorites and new discoveries. The locals select their destination considering the wind directions in the forecast, taking advantage of the Salento peninsula geography, and the short distances to reach an easterly, southerly, or westerly exposed coastline. When “Scirocco”, we suggest the sandy beaches around Otranto, most famously Baia dei Turchi and Alimini. In case of “Tramontana” the “Caicco” or “Arches” facilities or the public (no fee) access from Porto Miggiano (“pedalo'” can be rented for a funny arrival to the sandy beach behind the small cape), the ancient roman port of Castro (10% discount for guest of the Locanda del Riccio, at the Hotel La Roccia Restaurant and for umbrella & chair rentals), the public access points of Punta Correnti or Argentiera or the facility of La Sorgente. Other accesses are available driving further south along the Adriatic coast, the inlet of Acquaviva (immediately after Castro), Tricase Porto, the Ciolo with its restaurant (L'Incanto) overlooking the bay for a perfect and spectacular lunch watching the green and blue waters and the divers from the high rocky cliffs. Small motor boats can be rented in Porto Miggiano or in Castro for a full day exploration of the numerous coves and caves of the otherwise inaccessible high cliff rocky coast. When the sea is rough we would suggest either the fjord of Porto Badisco as it provides a natural barrier to the waves or the “Piscine Sulfuree” (natural sulphurous water pool) in the Santa Cesarea Spa. On the Ionic sea we recommend a day in Porto Selvaggio, north of Gallipoli: the 1 km downhill (…and the return up a hill) hike in a pine tree forest provides access to one of the top 10 beaches in Italy with its indented coasts with alternating rocky/sandy beaches and pristine waters.South of Gallipoli the Nature Parks of Sant'Andrea and the coastline to Punta Pizzo offers lengthy beaches and easy access to crystal clear waters. Marina di Pescoluso, close to Santa Maria di Leuca, is nicknamed by the locals as the Italian Maldives. SPA: The SPA of Santa Cearea Terme has been operating since the early 1900s, and offers a wide range of excellent spa treatments and therapies thanks to the natural spring of sulphurous waters, rich in minerals and salts, with active therapeutic properties.
