Description from owner

Description

An old farm house completely renovated in 1999, the gite offers all the facilities of a three star gite de France. It is situated in the country, 2.5 kms from the village of Camors (pop 2600) but half an hour from the lovely beaches of southern Brittany, the same distance from the Golfe du Morbihan, the mythic fields of standing stones in Carnac, and if you go inland the medieval cities of Josselin, Pontivy or Hennebont. For the gastronomes, there are plenty of crêperies and restaurants in the area. You can also order your seafood platter direct from the oyster farmer near La Trinité sur Mer. For people who like walking you can discover our hiking trails in the forest of Camors, within walking distance from the gite. People who have stayed here have particularly enjoyed the peace and quiet of the area.

The Brittany region

Brittany has lots to offer to the tourists, whether in sporting activities or cultural activities, in summer or in mid-season. South Brittany has beautiful sandy beaches , those places are very busy in July and August , a complete contrast with Camors which is just half an hour away but has retained its quiet rural atmosphere.
With strong Celtic roots this region is different from the rest of France. Many festivals and local celebrations attract tourists in the summer mainly, but from April to October you can attend special local events. Some places are open all the year round.
The new Museum in Rennes will give you all the details about our history. There is also a large museum in Carnac , another in Vannes, dealing with the megaliths and the archeological researches which have been very active in this area. Megaliths are everywhere around here, there is even a row of 56 dolmens, all on one line, in the forest of Camors actually within walking distance from the gite. This is a land of mysterious legends and myths.
If you are interested in Breton music and folklore don't miss the Interceltic Festival in Lorient (30 km) which takes places every year on the first week of August, or the Fetes de Cornouaille in Quimper (90 km) around the 26th of July.
Painters have always been fond of the very particular light we have here in some places like Pont-Aven (60 km). The Museum of Le Faout (70 km) has always some interesting paintings on display, and so has the Muse de la Cohue in Vannes (30 km).
Several chateaux in the area are also worth a visit: Josselin, Pontivy, Hennebont.

Pluvigner

Kernaskellec used to be composed of only three small farms. The fields are now parts of different big farms, some farmers living quite a distance away from here. One of them has a dozen cows that you can see from the gite, on the other side of the road , a peaceful scene to see them grazing or chewing from dawn to dusk. Nearer to the gite door , there are two sheep which help me keep the vegetation down in places where the tractor would not venture. They will sometimes stare at you but in general would ignore the visitors. Unlike their placid mothers the five lambs who were born in early March were quite a lively spectacle until I had to say goodbye to them in July.
Some of the land was sold, and there are now two new houses added to the three original farm buildings - people looking for the peaceful surroundings too .
The river advertised for its trout and small fish is just a mile away.
Kernaskellec comes to life once a year with crowds of 15 to 20 thousand people who come to watch the Ronde des Korrigans, on the Wednesday following the arrival of the Tour de France on the Champs Elysées in Paris. A few champions from the Tour plus local hopeful ones, come to cycle round the 2.5 km loop which is just on the gite door step. All the great names of cycling have come here since the first race in 1960. After those few hours when we enjoy the medias' attention, we are glad to return to our peace and quiet.
