Northeast Aegean Islands region
The picturesque fishing village of Melinda epitomizes the untouched and unspoiled Lesvos, located at the mouth of a canyon with interspersed groves of olives that end to the long quiet beach and waterfront traditional tavernas.
The name of Melinda comes from the latin word Milicia which means 'guard'. The village historically was created by local fishermen and sails men, who later abandonded the water front and moved to the current location of Palaiochori village to avoid pirate attacks.
In a radius of 6 km away, you may drive, cycle, walk or sail to Plomari, the Ouzo capital of Lesvos, Palaiochori, the oldest stone-built amphitheatrical village of the region and Panagia Krifti, a little chapel hidden in a rock above a small bay with hot springs.
Lesvos is the third largest island of Greece and has a long history that goes back more than 3.000 years, being the birthplace of the famous ancient poets Sappfo and Alcaeos. It is an island full of monuments, traditions, history, culture, thermal springs and natural phenomenon (i.e. the unique petrified forest).
Rich in olives (some 11 million olive trees are cultivated here) and fish, the island always enjoyed an economic balance rare in the Aegean originating from olives products, the traditional unique distillate “ouzo”, fishing and livestock farming.
Lesvos Island landscape is extremely diverse and has not been overwhelmed by tourists as much as some other Islands in Greece have. At Lesvos you will find a wide range of towns, villages and areas which await your visit.
