La Ferme Fortifié was the original fortified manor farmhouse built in the late 1600's at Poulmarvezen. It has a stone spiral staircase in a tower with a "meutrier", (a gun slit), there is a massive stone Breton fireplace, (complete with wood burning stove for cosy winter lets) and many other interesting exposed stonework details. The property has been restored to a very high standard with three en-suite bedrooms (two doubles and one twin) on the first floor, accessed via the stone spiral staircase, and on the ground floor an enormous (37 feet long) open plan living/dining/kitchen area.Poulmarvezen was formerly a farmstead whose history can be traced back for centuries. The original choice of the site for a farm was on account of the natural spring that occurs here, (even to this day), and the unique Breton name Poulmarvezen reflects this (Poul, pool). The oldest of the buildings that remain was built in the late 1600's, a fortified farm with its own stone spiral staircase in a stone tower, complete with gun slit! The old prison has long since disappeared, along with the right to imprison local miscreants. The first addition to the longere (longhouse) was built in 1729, and the standard of the finely dressed stonework reveals that the farm must have prospered in the interim. Later additions were made in the early 1800's.

The Brittany region
The villages of Ploerdut and Lignol are each three kilometres distant and offer restaurants, bars and boulangeries. The bar Chez Marie Thé in Ploerdut (arguably the best in the area) serves an excellent four-course lunch with wine for a remarkable 11 Euros. Guemène-sur-Scorff is ten minutes away by car and offers supermarkets, banks, a wider range of shops, and even more restaurants. The roads in this part of Brittany are very quiet even in the summer, and it is possible to drive several kilometres without seeing another vehicle.
Nearest large town: Guemène-sur-Scorff (5kms East)
Other large towns nearby: Pontivy (25kms East), Carhaix-Plougouet (40kms North West), Lorient (40kms S)
Département: Morbihan (56)
The area is ideal for walking, cycling, fishing, painting and drawing and photography, not to mention eating, and there is a multitude of interesting places to visit within half an hour's drive, including the mysterious Chapelle St. Barbe (ring the massive bell), St. Fiacre, Le Faouet market hall, Les Rochers Du Diable (white water kayaking), the pretty Vallee-du-Scorff (picnic here), the Lac de Guerladan (boating from a tree-shaded beach), and many local street markets, notably Hennebont, Rostrenen, and further afield Vannes on a Wednesday, all ideal for gourmets and photographers. The Nantes-Brest canal, built by Napoleon (not personally) cuts through the area and offers picturesque level walking. It was built so that old Bonaparte could get his ships from North to South Brittany and back without the English sinking them.

"Peaceful heart of Brittany"
the property is peaceful and picturesque. Nearby towns offered a great variety of restaurants, local food shops and great bakeries. many local fetes and festivals to be enjoyed and beautiful towns castles and markets in easy reach. we had 2 glorious sunny days, 2 half sunny and the rest with lots of rain, but that is to be expected in Brittany

We enjoyed our stay at La Ferme Poulmarvezen this summer and we travelled with our two sons aged 18 & 22. We all enjoyed the swimming pool and Wifi was a hit with the boys. UK satellite TV was also welcome especially as Wimbledon was on during our stay. Great supermarket and chemist in next village. A car a must. Great bolt hole to explore both inland and coastal areas. La Ferme has ensuites to all bedrooms; all 3 were comfortable and cosy. The downstairs was cool in the hot weather but we also enjoyed the open fire in the evenings after collecting logs from the onsite woodland. The owners Ron and Sue make you feel welcome and were easily contactable before, during and after our stay. NB. Remember to email the owners your bank details after your stay so that your rental deposit can be returned to you a.s.a.p. Can highly recommend Poulmarvezen.

"Fabulous peaceful location"
The gite is well situated to explore the many delights of Brittany. We returned each day after a day out exploring to a lovely peaceful setting. The gite has been nicely renovated and boasts 3 nice sized bedrooms, all en suite with a huge fireplace downstairs in the lounge. Ron and Sue are helpful without intruding on your holiday. We had a great week at Poulmarvezen and would definately return.
