The Dordogne region
The Dordogne is divided into four regions and the Perigord Noir, home of your holiday gite, is the most diverse. Famed for its beauty, enchanting picturesque sandstone villages with tucked away restaurants where you can sample the delights of the regional specialities of fois gras, truffles and strawberries.
Open air markets are an experience not to be missed. With their evocative scents and sounds these can be found dotted throughout the area on different days in different villages. Night markets are also a feature of the summer months as are countless festivals celebrating, music, dance, food and general 'joie de vie'.
For those who love wine you couldn't have picked a better area in which to stay. Bordeaux, St. Emilion, Pecharment and Bergerac appellations are all within easy reach.
Maison d'Amis is itself situated in the centre of a triangle created by the towns of Sarlat, Bergerac and Perigeux. All steeped in history, packed with shops and interesting things to see and do. Each has its own distinct character and all deserve a visit – if you have time!
Why not visit Maison d'Amis in the off peak months of April, May, June and September. The weather is superb and all the major attractions are open but without the queues, and rental rates are less!
Plazac (hidden gem of the Perigord Noir) is a medieval village steeped in history and full of character. Depending on the time of year, you could find yourself dancing down the main street joining the locals enjoying their summer fete, or maybe, sitting in the audience listening to opera when the music festival is in full swing.
Canoeing, parapenting, cycling, golf and horse riding can all be enjoyed locally for those who are more active. For those who prefer gentler pursuits the Vezere valley is covered in little pathways asking to be explored. Take a picnic and enjoy your lunch by the riverside before ambling home to relax and watch the sunset.
Roque St Christophe, a centre of pre history, is just a five minute drive away. The famous caves of Lascaux, situated in Montignac, and Les Eyzies-de-Tayac, the centre of Pre-history, are both about 15 to 20 mins drive away.
Local Buddhist centres are within a 5 - 10 minute drive and have open days should you wish to experience the Buddhist lifestyle.

"An Excellent Base"
The gite was a perfect base for exploring the local area. We felt we were in rural France away from the tourist spots. The accommodation had everything we needed and our hosts were always ready to help and offer suggestions if necessary

"A lovely place to stay in the most beautiful countryside."
The gite was lovely, clean and very well equipped. Our hosts were extremely welcoming and helpful with everything from recommending places to visit, to the best local restaurants, even providing directions on how to get there!! The gite is set in beautiful grounds and we enjoyed exploring these along with many other walks in the local area. May was a beautiful time of year to visit, the wildlife and meadow flowers were lovely. The setting is beautiful and well placed for many local attractions - we had the loveliest week and would recommend to others without hesitation. We hope to visit again!

"Maison d'Amis met all our needs, location beautiful, lots to do in the area"
Maison d'Amis is fully equipped, comfortable and spotlessly clean. Linda and Stephen the hosts are excellent they allow you your own space but are always there if required. The location of the property is so peaceful, fantastic for nature lovers, deer actually visit the garden, being able to walk in the woods belonging to the property is an added bonus. There is so much to do and see in the local area and further a field if required, we would recommend a visit to the towns of Montignac, Sarlat, Bergerac and Domme to mention just a few. Our hosts recommended a canoe trip on the Vesere river, it lived up to their recommendations and we took another trip in a different location because we enjoyed the experience so much, it is a must for all ages especially as the river is very tranquil (very shallow). We wish we could have stayed longer and have no hesitation in recommending Maison d'Amis,we hope to return in the future.

"Excellent accomodation and location."
This accomodation was spotlessly clean and well presented. The location is superb - set in stunning countryside far enough off the beaten track to provide plenty of peace and tranquility yet close enough to all ammenities. The Vezere valley is beautiful with a myriad of prehistoric sites worth seeing. The owners Stephen and Linda are lovely people, kind and attentive to our needs but also unobstrusive. We cannot rate our two week stay highly enough and we WILL be returning in the near future.

"Perfect gite in a fantastic location."
The gite has been renovated to an exceptional standard and is situated in a beautiful position in a quiet valley. This is an excellent location for a relaxing getaway, and an ideal base from which to visit the numerous stunning towns and villages in the Dordogne and Vezere regions. The owners live next door and could not have been better hosts. The warm welcome on our arrival, the introduction to the property and it's facilities, and the advice they offered regarding places we might like to visit set us up ideally for a perfect week away. Can't wait to go back!

"Well appointed, spacious gite for two where everything has been thought of."
This lovely gite is located in a quiet and pretty location close to the Vezere valley where there is lots to see and do. The nearby village of Plazac has a Post Office, boulangerie and Bio-Coop, and a big new InterMarche is only 15 minutes' drive away. The gite itself has been tastefully refurbished throughout, maintaining original features but with all mod cons. The owners, who live next door, are welcoming, friendly and helpful, providing a first-night meal (pre-booked) to save cooking when you arrive. They also brought round some fruit and vegetables from their garden, and were happy for us to help ourselves to fruit from trees in the grounds - apples and figs - during our stay.

"Great place for couples"
Wonderfuly spacious and cozy conversion which is perfect for couples who want to sightsee while relaxing in the Dordoigne countryside. All mod cons and an extensive library that you can orrow from. Linda and Stephen were perfect hosts, always cheerful and helpful. The grounds are worth exploring as there is a pleasant wood at the top of the plot which they own and you may see deer. It's well situated for the villages of the Vezerre valley and we'd highly recommend the Restauatant de la Poste in Saint Leon Sur Vezere as a place for lunch

"Perfect base for a Dordogne holiday"
We had a wonderful two weeks at Maison d'Amis. The house looks from the website as if it is way out in the countryside and indeed that's how it feels once you're there. The wildlife and the land around the house make it a real "oasis of calm". But in fact it is perfectly situated to reach many of the main tourist sites in the area in an average 45 mins to an hour's drive. Indeed some attractions are almost on the doorstep with the closest being less than 10 minutes away! The house itself is decorated to a high standard and Linda and Stephen are the perfect hosts with a ready supply of information and ideas as well as fresh produce from their garden. We found this the perfect base from which to explore the Dordogne but we always looked forward to returning at the end of the day to sit on the patio with a glass of wine and read a book or take in the view. We would recommend this to anyone who wants to relax and unwind in beautiful surroundings.

"Just as we imagined and much more – a wonderful, relaxing stay in the Perigord region."
We stayed for a week, and could have stayed a year. It was a lovely restored barn that is ideal for couples looking to relax in a lovely part of France. The views were amazing from the patio where we had our meals when not eating out, and we had excellent undisturbed sleep on a great bed. The accommodation was spotless, with all you need for a great holiday. There are some great value (and great food) restaurants within 10km, although the accommodation had an excellent kitchen and herb garden. There are plenty of historic attractions and river activities. Croissants and fresh breads are only a leisurely walk down the road. Plenty of wildlife to see - including deer. I had a great walk around the historic village. I have not exaggerated in my scoring – faultless accommodation. There is a bio-organic supermarket within 4 minutes drive, along with the usual small village essentials e.g. cafe. I have had 4 trips to France – this was the best ever! Linda and Stephen were wonderful to us. Ricky and Megan

"A delightful hideaway in rural France"
An excellent and newly refurbished separate house in extensive the grounds, next door but not within immediate view of the hospitable but discreet hosts. A great escape, the gite is on a hill with its own bbq area on the patio outside. The gite itself is simply but well appointed, very clean and fresh with plenty of space. Lovely master bedroom and the bathroom has a superb double walk in shower. It's a great place to relax and unwind yet get out and about. Recommend you book the fabulous welcome meal on arrival, cooked, prepared and delivered by hosts next door. We cycled to Plazac's bakery in the mornings and walked to bar/restaurant one eve but note that it's a tough trek back up the short but steep hill to the gite, lit only by the moonlight but stand still if you hear a rustle and deer may cross your path. Great surrounding area for cycling, touring, walking etc. Visit the French markets in the nearby towns for delicious produce and there are a couple of supermarkets within easy driving distance. Highly recommend kayaking on the river for a few hours with a picnic. There is a lot to do around the area if you enjoy the outdoors and the star gazing is superb. Lots of wildlife in the extensive grounds. Highly recommended.
