The Rethymnon Prefecture region
Crete is the largest of the Greek islands and also a location of significant ancient history, thus a popular tourist destination.
Its attractions include the Minoan sites of Knossos and Phaistos, the classical site of Gortys, the Venetian castle at Rethymno, the notorious Samaria Gorge, the enchanting Kourtalioti gorge, as well as many other natural sites, monuments, and beaches. Crete was the centre of the Minoan civilization (ca. 2600–1400 BC). The island has also been called Classical Latin Creta, Vulgar Latin Candia.
Crete straddles two climatic zones, the Mediterranean and the North African, mainly falling within the former ,as such, the climate in Crete is primarily temperate. The atmosphere can be quite humid, depending on the proximity to the sea, while winter is fairly mild. Snowfall is common on the mountains between November and May, but rare at the low lying areas - especially near the coast when it only stays on the ground for a few minutes/hours.
During the Cretan summer, average temperatures reach the high 20s-low 30s (Celsius), with maxima touching the upper 30s to mid 40s.The south coast falls in the North African climatic zone, and thus enjoys significantly more sunny days and high temperatures throughout the year.
In about two km distance there are some of Crete's most beautiful beaches with turquoise crystalclear water like Ammoudi, Ammoudaki, Klisidi, Schoinaria, Damnoni and Paligremnos, and even more places waiting to be explored, as well as beaches accessible only by boat.
The gorge of Kourtalioti is renowed for its wild beauty. Discover its enchanting secrets and enjoy the lush nature and the astonishing view down the rocks!!! The Kourtalioti river diverts into five brooklets, forming ponds, dropping down waterfalls, meeting again, passing the palm tree forest of Preveli to finally flow into the Libyan Sea.
Another interesting outing is a visit of the monastery of Preveli, located high above the jagged coastline with great panoramic view.
The monastery of Preveli was founded in the 16th century, since then it played an important role as spiritual, cultural and political centre, well known beyond the natural borders of Crete.
The footpath down to Preveli Beach starts high on a cliff, another path is leading to further beaches towards the east where two tavernas can be found as well.
The unusual folcloristic and historic museum of Papa Michalis in Asomatos brings previous centuries back to live. Learn about cretan history from times of the turkish occupation until today, imagine what live may have been like a hundred years ago in a mountain village.

"A very special place to stay with authentic Greek hospitality"
This stay was one of the highlights of our holiday in Greece, where we stayed in many different places, mainly because of the personal input of the owners, Betty and Ilias. Right from the moment I started enquiries about the property, until we left, we felt like we were visiting friends, even though we had never met before. Betty emailed us excellent instructions on how to get there (because we arrived the unusual way, by public bus): we phoned Ilias when we arrived from the local supermarket in Lefkogeia, and Ilias was there in 5 minutes with his pick-up, truck, loading our backpacks, and whisking us off to the apartment (which turned out to be a 2 minute walk from the supermarket. He then invited us to the farm they own on the outskirts of town, and we were treated to a personal tour of the property, meeting all the animals, etc. While sitting on their front porch, drinking raki, Betty came home, and we spent another hour or so, getting to know this lovely couple. Betty has a university education from Athens and studied English. She has an excellent command of the language. Ilias, likewise, is very capable in English: he used to run a dive school in Athens and has lots of experience dealing with tourists. Together, they told us many interesting things about life in Lefkogeia, life on Crete, and life in Greece in general. This was the first time we had been able to engage with Greeks to such an extent, because there are few we met with such a good command of English. We were treated to more of their hospitality during our short stay in Lefkogeia, and were really sorry when we had to leave, as it was like saying goodbye to lifelong friends! Getting to the apartment: it is a gem! Set in a narrow alleyway, with Greek neighbours, it is an old building which has been lovingly and innovatively renovated by Ilias and decorated by Betty. The kitchen had all the equipment, pots, pans, cutlery, etc that one could wish for, and we were able to cook a few of our meals. That's because we were on a tight budget. The local Tavernas were excellent and very reasonably priced and we can highly recommend eating there too.The romantic bedroom was up on the top floor. It had a big balcony overlooking the town and surrounding mountains. I loved lying in bed listening to the swallows and the goats' bells and church bells in the mornings. We did great hikes while there: one epic one along the gorge to Palm Beach (ask Ilias for directions) and several over the hills at the back of Lefkogeia down to the beautiful beaches in the vicinity. We snorkelled and saw some lovely reef fish while there. The waters were clean and beautifully clear. I highly recommend the museum in the nearby village dedicated to Papa Michalis for a deeper understanding of the yesteryear of Crete and the facts about the German invasion during WW2.
My dear Penny, I can not describe to you how moved I was from your really wonderful review! What can I say... Except from the nicest words you had for us, it is the kind of description you have made that makes it so precious and helpful I suppose for future holidaymakers! And it is truly an honour to come from a colleauge or should I say a competitor??? I am not sure what exactly we are... I think we are more like competitors since we are on the same business! I lost your card, but I remembered Maison Mosaic because of the strange name! I only hope we get the chance to come over there some day, it looks absolutely idyllic!!! I am not sure whether we are going to catch a wave with Timi but I am most certainly sure that I will come with you to one of your tours hoping to see ....giraffes!!! I especially thank you for trying (...)and insisting to write this review, despite the obstacles you encountered! It means a lot. We were so glad to meet you. I know you sensed it! Many many kisses to you both! I 'd love to see you again... ok I confess.. preferably at Cape Town! :)

"Romantic, authentic location, cutest little villa, the best holidays!"
My partner and I spent a week in June in Lefkogia and we couldn't have dreamt of better holidays! We chose the place very carefully as we wanted to avoid typically tourist and overpriced area and favoured an authentic Cretan experience. And we weren't disappointed. The village is tiny, with authentic features and friendly locals. The shop is just around the corner, three local, value for money tavernas, that offer their traditional Cretan mezes (delicious) are worth visiting:) The house (more than apartment really) is not big but spacious enough, with all amenities necessary, including air con:) Weather in June is very pleasant, 27 degrees, with a fresh breeze, just perfect, if like us you like to walk and hike:) We would visit all 7 beaches (most on foot!) as the views are incredible, there are plenty of goats about:), sea is clear and warm enough in June to do some swimming and snorkelling. The village is quite far from bigger cities like Chania (about 1h30min drive) and Rethymnon (30min drive) so if you wish to explore a bit more of the island, you would need to hire a car for a few days - you can do it in Plakias (5km away from Lefkogia) if you ask Betty, she can give you a lift there:) Owners of the house were very helpful, checked if we were happy, offered a lift to the neighbouring villages etc). And if you feel like it you are very welcome to visit their farm (with all the farm animals!) and have a drink with them, we did, and had a lovely evening:) Also, Betty arranged a taxi for us to pick us up from the airport, which saved us time and aggravation as we arrived late - 23.30 at night. In general, a great place for a romance or family holidays:) with incredible views, amazing food, and beautiful beaches:)
Dear Agnes! You are a sweetheart!!! Do you know that? Thank you for choosing our property, thank you for a great description of the area and also thank you for your kind words. It was a pleasure meeting you both. Many kisses to Dunkan and to you too. Love, Betty

"Lovely Place to stay"
We stayed in this property for 17 nights in August. It was a fantastic find in the centre of an authentic Crete village where we were the only English people in the immediate vacinity. Although described as an apartment it is a small house, romantic in feel, but has good aircon so it is cool at night. It has a lovely shaded balcony where we spent most of our living time. From here you can look down on the activity in the narrow street below - all of which takes place in Greek. It is not at all "touristy", the local village people are very friendly and you have the opportunity to experience Cretan life. Within 100m is a small supermarket which sells everything you need to live off and adjacent to this is Stelios Taverna - great, good-value food - do not bother with the menu ask him what is special that day. A choice of great beaches, all with excellent snorkelling, are accesible within 2km. More choices a few more kilometers away. The owners Betty and Hillius live about 800m away and are very friendly. They frequently called in to check that everything was fine. They gave great advice when we asked and could not do enough to help. The village is small so we tended also to meet them in the supermarket etc. We were delighted to discover this lovely property and hope to return again.
Dear David, Thank you very much for taking the time to write a review for your holidays here in our village and for your kind words. I appreciate it so much! It was nice having you at the apartment and it was very nice meeting you! Thank you very much for joining us at the farm. It was such a lovely evening enjoying your pleasant company, drinking and discussing so many things like we were old friends. It is always a pleasure to enjoy the company of pleasant and interesting people! Give my greetings to Rosemary! Best wishes and come again soon! Betty

"Best holiday ever!"
My wife and 11 year-old daughter rented the apartment from Betty and Hilius for about two-and-a-half weeks in July and August, and we can honestly say we fee extremely lucky to have stumbled upon it! The village, Lefkogia is charming, the people overly welcoming and accommodating. (Make sure and go to Maria's in the village for dinner!) There are loads of fantastic beaches all over the area, some within walking distance of the apartment and the best thing was none of them were overcrowded at all, even on the hottest days. Some of the sites around the area include Preveli Monastery up on top of a mountain nearby, and Preveli Beach, one of the only palm beaches on Crete. Also make sure and visit Stavros' pottery shop in Asomatos village about 3 mins. drive. Our hosts, Betty and Hilius Katsavelou, were some of the nicest people we've had the pleasure of meeting on any holiday! They have a farm within walking distance of the village with a variety of animals; horses, pigs, a cow, Flower. Hilius' home-grown olives are delicious! (They have their own grove) We would recommend this apartment of the larger villa in the village to anyone planning a holiday to Crete.
Dear friends, Thank you for your lovely review! It made me feel so nice! We are very glad to have met you and we really hope to get the chance to enjoy your company again some day! Take care and kisses to you all.
