The Calabria region
Southern Italy remains unspoilt and steeped in tradition and culture.Calabria makes up the southernmost tip of the Italian Peninsular, laying between the Tyrrhenian and the Ionian seas. The area is renowned for its beauty and is made up of high cliffs with sheer drops into crystal clear sea, tiny enchanting coves and long wide golden beaches.Calabria also boosts three national parks which are fantastic for mountain climbing, rafting and trekking. Calabria enjoys warm weather from April to October. The summers are hot with clear blue skies and brilliant sunshine. Temperatures in July and August are +30°C with 12 hours of sun a day. Spring and autumn are also both warm with temperatures averaging 20-25°C.Local places of interest in Calabria include:TropeaTropea is a well established tourist spot, most famous view is the Church of Santa Maria dell’Isola, an ancient monastery on the summit of an island. Tropea has a maze of streets with hidden squares and restaurants. There is also a little museum - Museo Diocesano containing religious art and statutes. Beaches are at either side of the town.ReggioLocal attractions in Reggio include the Neo-Roman style cathedral, Aragon-style castle and the Archaeological museum features ‘The Riace Bronzes’. The town has many shops, bars and restaurants to enjoy and Sicily is a short 30 minute ferry ride away.

The Coast of the Gods contains some of the most stunning coastal landscapes in Southern Italy.Pizzo itself is a network of narrow lanes and historic buildings overflowing with lively festivals, stalls, food tasting and music. The Piazza della Republica is at the heart of the town. Here visitors and locals alike relax at outdoors tables enjoying the sunshine and a gelato. Pizzo has a fantastic range of facilities and activities with excellent, inexpensive restaurants, shops and bars for you to sample. A pizza and drink at a local restaurant will cost about €10. The town is renowned for its hand made ice cream, tartufo and the black ink-fish pasta dish "spaghetti al nero di seppia". Pizzo also has a small harbour with a lovely seaside promenade and beach. Local attractions include:• Pizzo Castello Murat – Pizzo is worth visiting for its castle alone! Built in the fifteenth century, the castle is most celebrated for being the place where Napoleon's brother-in-law, Joachim Murat, was executed. • Numerous churches - The Piedigrotta, The Madonna Del Carmine, The Della Grazie and many more, all with interesting backgrounds, sacred treasures and many of which are national monuments. Of note, the Chiesetta di Piedigrotta is one of the most visited attractions in Calabria. This little church is dug entirely out of tufa on the sea shore. The interior is ornamented with statues carved enthusiastically from the rock by a local family in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In the summer tourist season a little tourist 'train' called the Pizzo Express takes visitors on a tour of Pizzo and to the Chiesa di Piedigrotta.• The Aeolian Islands are seven small inhabited islands off the north shore of Sicily, close to the tip of Italy's toe. The islands are popular as a holiday destination, offering sunshine, beaches and natural beauty. The islands are grouped together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site - one of the islands is Stromboli, off the shores of Pizzo which has an active volcano!!! Tourists are attracted to the dramatic scenery, hot mud baths, and the opportunity to hike up to the craters of Vulcano and Stromboli.• Fairs and festivals - Take place in Pizzo throughout the year. These are always exciting events, enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. There are many seasonal and arts festivals, with performances and stalls showcasing local products. “A modern and convenient apartment in a quiet but nice resort”
I visit the apartment with my 20 year old daughter in July. The apartment was very clean and done out to a very high specification. It was situated within a peaceful complex and there was never a fight for sunbeds around the pool. The gym and pools were very useful. It is necessary to have a car to get supplies - the onsite supermarket is relatively limited. It is also necessary in order to get the best out of the visit to the area - the town of Pizzo is very nice but is not within walking distance. All in all we were very pleased with our stay and would recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing holiday and wanting to be self-sufficient.
Myself, my husband and our children aged 9 and 6 have just returned from a two week holiday at the Pizzo Beach Club. Firstly, the resort is only a 15 minute drive from the airport and during our stay we only saw one plane fly past so there was no noise from incoming or outgoing flights. The Pizzo Beach Club is absolutely beautiful and we could not fault anything, very pretty. The apartment is furnished to a very high standard and was spotlessly clean and had all the amenities that you should need including a washing machine. The apartment is ideally situated on the complex for both the swimming pools and the tennis courts and also has parking facilities right outside. The swimming pools are very clean and lifeguards are on watch all day. The resort resturant is very clean and the pizzas are really tasty and the staff including Francesco and Debbie we so polite and friendly and the resort also has tennis courts and a gym on site. The short walk to the beach takes approximately 7 minutes from the apartment through a lovely forest. The beach is very clean and doesnt get busy at all which suited us. The town of Pizzo is approximately 10 minutes by car, we would recommend hiring a car to see all the interesting history and beautiful towns such as the town of Tropea, which is excellent for shopping and has the clearest beach that we have ever been to. The town of Pizzo is lovely with small shops and good resturants and the best ice cream parlours. If you like history, we would reccommend visiting Morats Castle, Piedigrotta which is a cave full of carved statues, there is also a recently renovated monestery in Tropea on a cliff overlooking the sea. The food in this part of italy is very good, including very fresh fruit and vegetables and at very cheap prices. The weather was fantastic and hit approximately 40 most days. The agents for the apartment, Paul and Lorraine were always at hand if you have a problem and they couldnt have done any more for us and Lorraine even supplied us with all the local attractions in english as we could speak any italian. The owners of the property, Don and Julie we so friendly and nice and were very helpful. If you have any queries either before or during your stay, just give them a call and they will try their hardest to answer any questions and will go out of their way to give you any information that you may need. Our deposit was returned to us within a week of us being back in the uk. We would recommend this holiday to anyone and have done so to various friends of ours and we would definately be returning in the future. Don and Julie, we would just like to say a big thank you for letting us stay at your apartment and for letting us experience this beautiful part of italy. Thank you, Claire Mark, Callum and Macey x x
