Location description from owner

The Calabria region

Calabria possesses a typical southern Mediterranean climate with a slight variation due to the influence of the rugged mountains in the interior. 'Summer' runs from April to October. The Winter is of short duration, Calabria experiences some of the best weather of any Italian region and guests can enjoy 5 - 6 hours of sunshine per day during the winter- Warm summers- Nice Winters- An average of 270 days with sunshine / year- Few rainy days- High seawater surface temperatures Calabria is a natural and unspoilt area relatively undiscovered by tourists. The apartment, on the west coast, is well situated to explore both coast and inland. Close to the quaint historic towns of Pizzo and, further on, Tropea, both with marvellous sea views, festivals and food. Here is a brief outline of the things to see & do in this interesting & diverse region. An hours drive south from Pizzo is the city of Reggio di Calabria where the museum houses the famous Riace Bronzes. Sicily is only a short ferry trip from here.Drive inland from Pizzo to Serra San Bruno to see its wonderful Cathusian monastery, take a walk in the forest  then return via the SS110 road heading south towards Stilo- this is one of Calabria's most spectacular drives - through fields of fragrant wild flowers & pine forestsVisit the old villages perched on the hillsides in the mountainous interior  as well as the Sila  & Apromonte National Parks - beautiful - especially in the Spring & AutumnBoat trips  to the Aeolian Islands are very enjoyable, especially the evening cruise to StromboliEnjoy days by the pool or on the stunning sandy beach relaxing, or explore the countryside with its hilltop villages with their"old world" charm.Calabria's festivals  are of 2 types- religious & gastronomic. Given the influences of the Ancient Greeks, Romans, Normans, Byzantine, French & Spanish the events are colourful & dramatic. The gastronomic festivals or "sagre"  are based on the successful harvesting of crops / fishing- so are seasonal - & the food is fresh, at its best & wholesome

Pizzo

You can enjoy facilities of our apartment with its own enclosed garden & also the grounds within the gated complex - have a swim or relax by the pool or in the landscaped gardens An easy 300m walk takes you to the beach where you can enjoy swimming, walking, sailing, volleyball etc. A beach bar and restaurant are open in the summer seasonNearby Pizzo Town  is only 5km to the south. It's delightfully positioned between sea & mountains. It's one of Calabria's priettiest towns with it's red-roofed houses huddled together. Walk up & down the small alleyways, turn a corner & in front of you is an amazing sea view !The Castello Murat, also known as  Castello Aragonese is set in the cliff-top at one end of the main square, La Piazza della Repubblica. This  where Joachim Murat, Ex-King of Naples & brother-in-law  of Napoleon was imprisoned & executed  in 1815Pizzo's 8km long coastline comprises large white sandy beaches & small picturesque bays. Built into a grotto on the beach is the famous 'Chiesa di Piedigrotta' churchIn April Pizzo celebrates the L'Affrunata in the Piazza della Republica & in October there is the  Murat FestivalA little further down the coast to the south is Tropea  with its magnificent churches, atmospheric alleyways, gorgeous sea views, coastline & beaches. People come from all over the world to glimpse the houses built into the sheer cliff-sideThere are number of bars & restaurants within easy walking distance. Pizzo is famous for its ice-cream - 'Tartufo' - why not wind down at the end of the day at award winning, child friendly, Gelateria Enrico's  Ice Cream Parlour & Bar (250m away)
