Location description from owner

The Tuscany region

Tuscany is well known for is rich art, history, natural beauty, delicious food and good wines. The historic and culturally rich cities of Lucca and Florence are within easy reach for a day trip and closer to home we have Barga with its unspoiled streets and squares full of great charm and its 13th century Cathedral. A trip to the coast takes you through some breathtaking scenery and the quarries from which Michelangelo sourced the marble for his famous works of art.Viareggio is a popular seaside resort adjacent to Torre del Lago where Puccini lived and worked in his final years.

Pieve Fosciana

Situated in extensive grounds, bordered by a stream at the bottom, with views of open countryside and mountains beyond, this is a peaceful retreat. Despite the peace and privacy the site is less than a 10 minute walk cross country to the village of Pieve Fosciana with the following facilitiesThere are two restaurants - one of which is regarded to be the best in the area, but very well priced! Shops, including a delicatessen selling scrumptious home made Italian hot food to take away - with a menu that is changed daily. The market town of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana is only a 5 minute drive away too, with its bars, restaurants, shops, famous Thursday morning market, and train station for easy exploring. Lucca is less than a one hour drive away, Barga is 20 minutes, Florence 90 minutes, Pisa 1 hr 15 minutes. This property is well located for both relaxing and exploring, with the rare benefit of being within walking distance of a restaurant.

“Fantastic Holiday”

Reviewed 13 Sep 2015

We arrived to be met by the caretaker who showed us the house and facilities and made us feel very welcome. The house is very comfortable, well equipped and cool in the heat of the day. The two covered terraces were where we spent most of the time and are wonderful living spaces. The gardens and pool were great for relaxing in. The walk to town was fun for us all through the woods and over the river. There were 2 medium supermarkets within walking distance which stocked all the essentials and some luxuries. We took the train down to Lucca and to Pisa for day trips well worth a visit. We travelled with our own bikes so had various trips out into the most amazing countryside with wonderful views of the mountains and lovely cool dips in the rivers. All in all a fantastic holiday in a wonderful location staying in one of the nicest rental properties we have visited. We would definitely book this property again. For info we managed the tight turn onto driveway in a chevrolet orlando with bikes on the back no problems.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review, and we are really glad you enjoyed this beautiful house, and the surrounding area.

“FANTASTIC”

Reviewed 10 Sep 2015

THIS VILLA WAS SITUATED AT THE END OF A QUIET ROAD AWAY FROM ALL NOISE, YET WAS A 15-20 MIN EASY WALK TO LOCAL BARS, SHOPS AND THE BEST RESTAURANT IN THE AREA. The villa was clean and spacious, with a bath upstairs and a shower down stairs. There was plenty of out door furniture. Large pool - all one depth so very good for swimming

Thank you for your review, and we are really pleased you enjoyed all this peace, yet within walking distance of facilities!

“Great Location, Fantastic value for money, but be aware of difficult access”

Reviewed 3 Oct 2014

The property is near perfect & excellent value for money, also it is genuinely only a 10 minute walk to the village, ( cross country walk, very picturesque, but not one you'd tackle "dressed up" for a night out ). The biggest negative for us was, although other reviews referred to it, was we badly underestimated just how difficult the car access was. We have a Chrysler 300 which admittedly is one of the largest saloon cars ( but there are larger vehicles ) & in two areas there was only an inch clearance either side of the car between rough stone wall buildings. Tuscan Retreats do warn of a " tight left turn" advising you to go past & turn round to negotiate from a better angle, but we found the left turn wasn't the main issue, it was the shear narrowness in two spots. Getting out of the property was much harder than getting in, because the tricky zone is also quite steep uphill with a transition from gravel track to cobblestones (lots of wheel spin). After a few days we did sort of " master" negotiating it, but it did hamper us to a degree because we,d like to have driven out some evenings to try nearby restaurants, but there's no way we'd have risked the tricky access in the dark. That said I would still highly recommend this property but think TR should emphasize more fully on booking enquirys awareness of the car access issues.

“Beautiful house in tranquil location”

Reviewed 6 Jul 2013

The house is at the end of a very long farm track, and when first drove up to the house I thought my husband had got the address wrong! The house is spacious, clean and in a lovely location. It has a big garden, pool and at the end of the garden through the trees there is a river (although it was almost dried up in May). If you are looking to escape and have a rest this is the place, I actually struggled to sleep because it was so quite! My 2 year old loved the garden and pool. The house does have another small house sort of attached around to the side, but we hardly ever saw the owners and they were very quite. For exploring northern Tuscany it is perfect, but if you want to explore southern Tuscany this house is probably too far north (Florence is about 2 hrs drive, which we did in a day trip).

“Fabulous villa in the Garfagnana”

Reviewed 4 Nov 2012

The owner was there to welcome us, we were given a tour of the villa, all was clean and tidy. \the area is fabulous. we enjoyed the terracs and swimming pool. We had a problem with the hot water on Tuesday, and by the end of the day, it was fixed. The family next door were respectful of our privacy, and were friendly to us. The only thing I could possibly complain about, is that the information could be updated more often. We did however use the info, and found some awsome places. Thank you very much, if we were to return, we would not hesitate to rent Casa Eli again

Hi Linda I am glad you had a good stay at Case Eli - we get lots of thank you's and positive comments re this house and the area! Thank you for your feedback re information provided. We do update the housebooks each year since we are aware things can change quickly , but I will e mail you separately for some constructive criticism/suggestions, so we can ensure our 2013 booklet is as accurate as it can be. Thank you! Lorraine
