The Umbria region
Umbria is the "Green Heart" of Italy, known for its verdant countryside and all the hills topped with castles, villages, watch and bell towers. From Piegaro, which is right on the border of Tuscany, guests can visit all the famous sights of Umbria: nearby Perugia, Assisi, Orvieto, Todi, Spoleto, Spello, Gubbio and Lago Trasimeno. In Tuscany in 45 minutes will find you in the iconic Val d'Orcia, Montepulciano or Pienza or Cortona. In an hour: Siena, Florence, Montalcino. Enjoy the famous wines: Brunello of Montalcino, Vino Nobile of Montepulciano, Sagrantino of Montefalco and the classic white of Orvieto! Food harvest festivals range from asparagus in April to strawberries in June, Truffles in July and October, and Porcini mushrooms in September. We can arrange local wild asparagus, truffle or mushroom hunting. Local chefs teach guests to make typical Umbrian cuisine. Swim and water sports at our local Water Park or the largest lake in the Italian Peninsula, Lago Trasimeno is only 25 km. Weekly food markets filled with fresh vegetables, fruits, roast pork, cheeses and clothing. Shop in Cortona for the finest cashmere, leather bags, art work, ceramics and hand made shoes. Orvieto has ceramics, glass jewelry, olive wood products. Nearby Deruta is world famous for their hand painted ceramics in classic or modern designs. Arrive with an empty bag to fill with fine products! Local festivals in Piegaro in August guests can dress in medieval garb for a procession of royalty and watch glass artisans for a four day celebration of Days of Glass. In October is our annual Chestnut Festival for ten days filled with celebrations, feasts, food and craft booths, music and dancing. Perugia has the Umbrian Jazz in July and the Euro Chocolate Festival in October.
Piegaro is rich in history with glass making since 1292. Visit the Glass Museum in Piegaro which is wonderfully curated. Weekly classes for adults and children. Nearby waterpark is the largest in Umbria. Free wine tour and tasting at Castello Monte Vibiano Vecchio winery locally.
Piegaro is famous for glass making for over 700 years. Every year in August and October are festivals where glass blowers demonstrate their art, processions in medieval dress, food banquets, music and dancing. Visit local wineries in addition to the famous Cantina Monte Vibiano Vecchio where we take our guests weekly. In a few minutes drive you can taste Brunello wines of Montalcino, the Vino Nobile of Montepulciano or the classic Orvieto white wines. Largest waterpark is just 4 km from Piegaro.

Our week long stay at il Forno L'Antica Vetreria was perfect! Our hosts, Colleen and Tom, made sure we were able to enjoy Piegaro, as well as many magnificent, nearby towns. We met two other couples (from college days) and we enjoyed touring, shopping, dining, laughing and feeling "treated." The website has many photos of the town and surrounding areas of interest. One night, after dinner, we walked the quiet streets of Piegaro back to our suite and I felt as if I were in a movie set. The weather, vistas and history make this Italian getaway more than memorable.
