The Asturias region

Asturias lies along the central part of the north coast of Spain, sitting between Galicia to the west, and Cantabria and the Basque country to the east. In spite of being one of the smallest regions in Spain, it contains a wide variety of handscape. The huge mountain range of the Picos de Europa lies a short drive away from the coast in the east, while heading in any direction from the region´s main cities, Gijón and Oviedo, will soon bring you to one of the beatiful nature reserves. The asturian coast is also lined with glorious beaches. Gijón and Oviedo are large, moders Spanish cities of 250.000 inhabitants. Gijón, with a new promenade along its lengthy seafront is now competing with other more established, glamorous ports along the north coast, such as San Sebastian and Santander. It´s a great city for shopping and eating and for strolling along buzzing seafront. Oviedo, although smaller, is the capital of the region and is diminated by its 13th century cathedral, with an irresistible choise of restaurants, cider houses, bars, cafes and chic shops. Asturias has a warm, mild climate. Summers are hot without the searing heat of the south, while the winter months often bring days that are warm enought to eat and drink outside. This range of scenary within a small are makes Asturias an exciting destination for all kinds of travellers. A bracing walk in mountains higher with a stroll around one of the many picturesque fishing towns and villages. Asturians are considered open, friendly and generous by other Spaniards, and you can expect to be very well treated in restaurants and bars.

Whilst the summits of he Picos de Europa do not exceed three thounsand metres their closeness to the sea result in an abrupt ,steep landscape and the limestone geology gives rise to sheer-sided valleys and gorges (Cares, Sella,Duje, la Hermida...)and some world deepest potholes.

The Limestone Mountains Picos de Europa fall precipitously to the Cantabrian Sea, formin a rugged landscape of cliffs that shelter small, fine sanded beaches and coves. In many of the cliffs can be founded deep sinkholes throuh which the sea expels geysers of water under high pressure in an unforgettable experience..Natural harbours protect the small fishing fleets of villages like Ribadesella, Lastres, LLanes, famous for their well preserved old quarters and their tasty, fresh fish and sea food.

In the vecinity of this villages one can enjoy exciting activities :Horse riding the woods, Trekking , Outdoor pursuits (Caving, Canyoning specialised companies offer a wide variety of activities throuh the year), Fishig and hunting only in season,Mountain biking, Rock climbing, Golf (La Rasa de Berbes, Palacio de Rubianes and LLanes )Descent the River Sella in canoe.

Two rivers , the Cares and the Sella , delimit the extend and personality of the region , as the force of their waters has carved deep canyons and georges into the landscape that gradually give way to wider, forest valleys and plains that lead down to the sea,A rich ecosistem including spcies like otters, herons and cormorants and salmon and trout, the fishing of wich is one of the regions greatest attractions.

From Arriondas to Ribadesella in Augost, the Annual International Descent of the Sella canoeing competition is held, an event that has become an important fixture the internacional spoting calendar.
