Location description from owner

The Azores region

Majestic Pico mountain, with its' 2,352 m the highest peak in all of Portugal, makes Pico Island stand out from all the other islands of the archipelago. Also famous for its whaling tradition, Pico is the second largest island of the archipelago, covering a surface of about 448 sq. km (about 46 km long and 15 km wide). The distances to the other islands of the central group, of which Pico is the most southern, are about 8 km to Faial, 15 km to São Jorge, 80 km to Graciosa and 100 km to Terceira. The mountain rises out of the sea and up above the clouds. This is Pico, a volcanic cone that has been transformed by man´s hand into vineyards and orchards that erupt among the black lava.

We are positioned in a UNESCO protected area, right at the starting point of a popular hiking trail that meanders through a UNESCO designated, historic, rock-walled, Verdelho grape growing area.

For the more adventurous, the imposing Pico Mountain offers climbers the opportunity to climb a classic volcanic 'cone' and from the summit have the unsurpassed view of the entire central group of islands.

Pico also signifies the epic nature of whale-hunting. Nowadays this has evolved into the chance to observe these giants of the sea, to follow swiftly moving dolphins and appreciate the peaceful life of the many whale species that frequent the island waters.

Bathed by a warm branch of the Gulf Stream, the archipelago enjoys an atlantic maritime climate, with only slight variations in annual temperature. Average air temperatures 14º / 24 º C Winter / Summer.

Humidity 77% (average)

Ocean water temperatures 17º / 23º C
