The history of Villa Bottai begins in the 14th Century when the
powerful Gavacciani family built an imposing, aristocratic residence along the road that linked Florence to Rome via Volterra.

In 1333, Lapo Gavacciani had an Oratory built dedicated to the Holy Mary (which existed until the 19th century) and, two years later, a hospital for pilgrims and sick people.

The Gavacciani dynasty came to an end in 1376 and from then onwards the property had a number of different owners until 1569, when the rich and powerful Corboli family (who also contributed towards the building of Florence's defensive walls) acquired the whole estate, widened and embellished it.

The elegance of the Villa was so renowned that even Cosimo I, Grand Duke of Tuscany, used to be hosted there with his family to watch religious processions from the windows of the façade. A small shrine in the building opposite the Villa is a reminder of those gracious visits.

In 19th century the ownership of the Villa passed into the hands of the Bartoli and then of the Bottai families. During the centuries this ancient, aristocratic Mansion hosted some of the most important people to whom Florence owed much of its social and cultural development. The extremely refined atmosphere of the Residence and the lovely park overlooking the Tuscan countryside are still reminiscent of its glorious past

Location description from owner

The Tuscany region

Tuscany is known for its landscapes and its artistic legacy. Six Tuscan localities have been designated UNESCO protected sites: the historical centre of Florence(1982), the historical centre of Siena (1995), the square of the Cathedral of Pisa (1987), the historical centre of San Gimignao (1990), the historical centre of Pienza (1996) and the Val D'Orcia (2004).

Tuscany is considered the birthplace of the Renaissance movement, and its artistic heritage includes architecture, painting, and sculpture, collected in dozens of museums in towns and cities across the region. Perhaps the best-known are the Uffizi, the Accademia and the Bargello in Florence . Tuscany was the birthplace of Dante Alighieri ("the father of the Italian language"), Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Botticelli.

Tuscany is also well known for its wines, the most famous of which are Chianti, Brunello di Mantalcino, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, it has 120 protected nature reserves. Other agricultural products include Chianina cattle (origin of the famous "Fiorentina" steak) and the production of olive oil, principally in Lucca and the surrounding hills.

The industry comprises factories producing Piaggio motorcycles and scooters. Tourism is the economic backbone of the so-called "Cities of Art" Florence, Lucca, Pisa, Siena, San Gimignano, Cortona, Pienza, as well as on the coast and in the isles (Elba).

Piazzale Michelangelo

The Villa is ideally situated for visiting Florence, Siena, Arezzo, Cortona, Pisa, Lucca and Rome - not to mention the small cultural towns of San Gimignano, Certaldo, Vinci and many more. A car is not necessary as you are only 100m from the nearest bus stop that takes you in the centre of Florence. From there you can take a train or bus to any destination.

The seaside towns of Tirrenia and Rossignano are an hour away, Cecina is 1.5 hour with a water park and sandy beaches.Besides wandering in this beautiful city and looking at Renaissance art, there are many other things you can do in Tuscany. For example, you can learn to cook or just taste Tuscan food, do trekking, golf or go to a health spa.

At the property we have leaflets and information on events during your stay.

“Great location for a relaxing break”

Reviewed 3 Oct 2016

We enjoyed a very relaxing few days at Villa Bottai. Federica and her father were very kind and helpful, and the villa is comfortable and in a great location: peaceful, but with local shops, etc. a short walk away, and convenient buses into central Florence. The large swimming pool is a bonus when the weather is warm! Highly recommended.
