Charming house close to shops, the market and restaurants in the center of the pretty town of Pezenas. Pezenas is a joy to wander in and is ideally located to visit the Mediterranean beaches from Sete to Cap d'Agde to the Spanish border. These are only 20 minutes away. Oysters are cultivated and harvested nearby and sold a minutes walk from our home.
Our home is a classic French “maison village” in the heart of Pezenas. There is a new home across the narrow street, low and well set back from the road. Views into a sunny courtyard across the street and beyond to the clay rooftops of the surrounding buildings make for an interesting outlook. The tourist bureau refers to this area as the "modern" part of Pezenas being those homes built in the 18th century! The bustling main street is steps away as is the medieval area of narrow streets and artisans with their wares for sale. Our main street was recently renovated and features pedestrian activities particularly in summer when Estivales happens on Friday evening. This features music with regional vignerons selling wine and local food sellers vending cheeses, seafood etcetera.
This home is an excellent location for exploring our historic town, Roman sites and Cathar castles, beautiful vineyards and the endless sandy beaches of the Mediterranean.

This is our retirement home so the house is very well equipped with comfortable beds and shower rooms. We can provide a king sized bed (British call this super king) or switch to two twin beds. The beds are modern and comfortable. The home is smoke and pet free. The windows are huge modern and double glazed looking out over a scene of rooftops. When these are open you can stand on the "Juliette" balconies and watch life pass by. Ensuite shower rooms are in each bedroom. The bedrooms are separated by the living dining and kitchen areas. In the entry level you'll find a laundry room, chairs and towels for the beach, a picnic basket even a "boogie" board! We have just switched the telephone to an internet based system allowing free calls to the UK and North America. We also have an iPod/iPhone dock which can play music through our entertainment centre.
In 2015 we installed air-conditioning for the top two floors, the principal room and the upper bedroom. It makes the home more comfortable in the height of summer.
|Further details outdoors|
Our home features 2 large French windows opening on small "Juliette" balconies off the living room and lower bedroom.. The City of Pezenas has a lovely park nearby, tennis courts and swimming pools within walking distance. Outdoor bars and cafes abound. The Languedoc-Roussillon region
Languedoc promises 300 days of sunshine every year. The region provides everything for the holiday maker. Nearby are Beziers, Montpellier, Agde, Sete, the Canal du Midi plus miles of Mediterranean beaches. A little further afield are Nimes, Avignon, the famous Pont du Gard, Carcassone and many smaller historical areas such Saint-Guilem-le-Desert, Cirque Navacelles and the Cathar regions including Minerve.
Close to the sand and sea are the Camargue and its 100,000 flamingos. A day trip to the Roquefort cheese makers is interesting as is a viewing of the world famous Millau Viaduct. No holiday would be complete without trying the regional wines. St Chinian and Faugeres are two of the regions most recognized terroir.
If you are visiting in July or August Pezenas hosts "Estivales" a Friday night extravaganza of tapas and wine tasting from local restaurants and wine makers. Get there early it's only a short walk from the house.
Montpellier and Beziers are both excellent city breaks easily reached by inexpensive buses which can be boarded nearby. A book good for 10 trips in the Herault costs €10.00
Pezenas is a historic town with a population of about 8000. It is in the heart of the Languedoc region of the South of France a vast wine making area. The town has several bakeries and shops within easy walking distance of the house so fresh breads, cheese, wine, fruit and vegetables are right at hand. There are also two excellent stands selling fresh shellfish. There is a well stocked Carrefour Market for larger shopping expeditions.
The Saturday market is nothing short of fabulous and a must for anyone who loves Mediterranean food. It's less than a block from our house. On Sundays many of the fine large homes, "hotels", open their doors for the tourists.
Self guiding maps are available at the local tourist bureau. The oldest part of town has explanatory signs in several languages to direct tourists.

"A home away from home."
This flat is perfect for people who love to come home from a long day on the road with a collection of foodstuffs to convert to a perfect French meal. The owners have thought of everything, thoughtfully leaving things like olive oil and vinegars, spices etc. The only downside? The winding staircase is tough after a long day, particularly when carrying lots of wine. There is ample room to leave suitcases on ground floor, which i would do next time. The town is friendly, lots of choices for bakeries close by.

"A gem of a house in a hidden treasure of a French village"
Well, what a find! Our expectations were high for this rental and they were exceeded. The house is in a lovely little street just a short stroll to the heart of Pezenas. Everything was spotless when we arrived and all the appliances modern. We were with another couple and it was a very comfortable size for four. Each bedroom had an ensuite and took up its own floor. The bedrooms were very spacious, especially for Europe. The two bedrooms were separated by the living/dining/kitchen area, which was very convenient. The spiral staircase could be difficult for people with restricted mobility, but was good fun. We suggest leaving suitcases on the ground floor - beside the excellent laundry - and taking up clothes as you need them if stairs are a problem. We hit a heatwave but once we worked out the best place for the fans we were fine. There are a number of patisseries at the end of the street for morning croissants. There are also market stalls and a large supermarket nearby for provisions. In the centre of Pezenas there are many cafes, bars, etc. We loved exploring all the little winding streets and finding various artists' studios. There are so many places to visit in the nearby countryside, and the Mediterranean is just a half-hour drive away. We stayed for two weeks and could happily have stayed longer. We are already trying to work out when we can return! Chuck & Stephanie were great to deal with when we were planning our visit and gave us lots of helpful information. Their house is also full of maps, booklets and guides of the area, which were so useful. We cannot recommend this rental highly enough.

"The Quintessential Southern France Experience"
It's hard to know where to start, as there were so many things that we liked. Everything was great, right from the booking experience (communicating with the owners in Canada), to arriving and meeting their friends who had the key, to the comfortable beds, to the market down the street, to the beach 20 minutes away...it was all very, very good. The kids especially loved the spiral staircase that wound from the ground floor all the way up their room on the 4th level. Maybe not perfect for families with toddlers, but ours were early teen so it was great. The location in the heart of Pezanas made it easy for early morning walks out for a coffee and to pick up croissants to bring back for breakfast. The local restaurants were good (especially the one located in the converted church horse barn). The beach is 20 minutes away and is absolutely spectacular. Nimes, Arles and other spots are within an hour's drive away. The list goes on. We also liked the fact that despite the very narrow streets and the closeness of buildings, this home has a view out across the rooftops, which was unusual for the area, and a real treat. Be aware, however, that there is no private outdoor space at this property other than the street itself, and there is no A/C, so on very hot (36C) days it can be tough to chill out inside if you want your own space. We had a couple of those days/evenings while we were there, but it was known up front, so it wasn't a huge deal for us. It's just something to bear in mind when booking. Something else to be aware of (although it is a very good thing) is that unlike a lot of the international touristy spots in France, Pezanas and area is a little off the beaten path and so the folks round here are not generally fluent in english. You can still get by with no french and a little enthusiasm and humour, but speaking some french is very helpful, and respectful. We know some french, and it was very useful for us. All you need is a few basic words and phrases to really feel part of the place. Again, all good. In summary, if you are looking for a villa with private open outdoor space, this probably isn't the place for you. However, if you seek the consummate south of France urban small town experience, that is both authentic and awesome, then this is really the only place to be. Book it and you will love it.
