Getting around

We do recommend you bring a car to Orton as there is so much to see and do in the wider area, it would be a shame to miss out. That said, there are lots of walks straight from the cottage door, there is a village pub, two cafes, a chocolate shop and a village convenience store, so if you really want to just nestle away for your stay, you can do! There are bus links into the village but they are limited. You can also get trains to Kirkby Stephen, Oxenholme (Kendal) or Appleby and taxi from there to Orton.

Interaction with guest

We want you to really love your stay in South Cottage and for those precious moments in your holiday, it's your cottage to enjoy. So, we won't disturb you during your stay - and we don't live in the area either, so you needn't feel watched! You can enjoy complete privacy during your stay. We will only ever ask access if there is any critical maintenance to attend to. We are, however, fully contactable during your stay and have a team of maintenance and generally helpful people should you encounter a problem at all!

Very Good

“Lovely House lovely village”

Reviewed 12 Dec 2017

I had a lovely peaceful stay. Really nice cottage. There was a bottle of wine to welcome me- I would probably rather had logs but I appreciate that that is my preference.

Owner's reply: Thank you so much for your review and I'm so pleased you had a lovely, peaceful stay in the cottage. The village store does supply logs at very reasonable prices, so we usually direct guests there - you can also get coal and kindling from them, but happy to arrange this for you next time if you prefer. Hope you come again one day! All the very best, Chloe x

Owner's reply: Hi there, thank you for your review - so pleased you had another lovely stay! Glad it was super cosy for you and you made the most of the fire!! Would love to have you to stay again one day :) All the best, Chloe x

“A wonderful place to stay”

Reviewed 8 May 2013

The cottage had everything we needed and was comfortable and clean. The WIFI was excellent. Orton is a lovely village to walk in and enjoy the scenic beauty. If you get a chance, try to attend one of the church services at the village church, it made the visit that much more special. We highly recommend South Cottage !

“A lovely, well-equipped cottage in an ideal village”

We really enjoyed our stay in this homely cottage. It is very well equipped, from the kitchen, to games and books, to the maps you need for Orton and the lake district. The village has everything you need, including a chocolate factory! You can walk out of the village, straight onto the fells, with a great view of the howgills and beyond. Lovely!

“A great little cottage”

Reviewed 12 Feb 2013

What more could you ask for! The cottage has everything you could possibly think of needing, it's a little unorthadox in layout but a fab use of space. Location wise the lake district is on your doorstep with great walks starting at the end of the drive. The pub across the road (less than 1 minute away) was so friendly with good food (coeliac friendly!!) and even did takeout. The village shop stocks everything and then some. There were 2 of us and our little border terrier and we all loved it. The only downside to this brilliant little cottage is the double bedroom and the fact that one side of the bed is against a wall - one person does have to be agile and the other prepard to climbed over :-) ! That said we can't wait to re-book for next year. We loved it.

“A perfect escape!”

Lovely cottage, immaculately clean with plenty of utensils in the kitchen. My husband was kept busy making lovely log fires! My teenage daughter was happy discovering scrabble and rope swings over the lake!! The village has the best stocked supplies of any corner shop I have ever seen! The local pub had a fantastic roaring fire and friendly landlord and locals. All this before I even mention the chocolate factory across the road! We will definitely be going back!

“Excellent, well-equipped cottage in a lovely village.”

Reviewed 12 Apr 2012

The cottage was clean and very well organised, located centrally for the village, which had a pub, chocolate factory/tea room and local store. Everyone was very friendly and helpful, and although the cottage was central it was very private. There was a real fire for bad weather and a good TV and wi-fi. Also there were loads of lovely local walks from the house. We are looking forward to going again.
