Description from owner

Description

Overlooking the dramatic gorges of the Aveyron river and Penne village with its impossibly teetering medieval castle, our 260 year old barn has been sensitively renovated to offer you a relaxing holiday in this idyllic part of rural France. The barn is right next to the 10m by 5m pool which is almost exclusively for your use (the owners, Kate and Justin, might occasionally want to take a dip, with your permission).

Our nearest town is St Antonin Noble Val, an unspoilt medieval town famed for its lively Sunday market.

There is plenty of outdoor activity in the area such as Canoeing, Mountain biking, Caving river swimming and Walking. Days out might include visits to Cordes sur Ciel, Montauban, Gaillac and Albi or perhaps visits to some of the many vineyards of the Gaillac region.

Location description from owner

The Occitanie region

Our house and barn are in Roussergues, a tiny rural hamlet of about 8 dwellings, although strictly speaking it's a village as it has an unused church and used to have a school. Our neighbours are all French and will always be helpful if you need it. You can walk in any direction and enjoy fabulous views and even find caves to explore in the limestone hills opposite the house.

Penne is 5 minutes away by road or a pleasant 20 minute walk. It's an unspoilt medieval village complete with ruined castle. This is open to visit and offers lots of information about life and times in medieval France (mostly in French but with English handout guides). It has a bar/restaurant, a decent grocery and a small tourist information office.

Penne

St Antonin Noble Val is about 10 miles away and is the most beautiful town, originally an important Roman crossing point for the Aveyron. It has a famous Sunday market which is great fun. It's great to walk around and get lost in the narrow medieval streets. The town has been used as location for a number of films, notably Charlotte Grey and The Hundred Foot Journey starring Helen Mirren. These are often on show at the local cinema in "VO" (version originale with French subtitles). You can hire canoes here for half or full day trips down the Aveyron back towards Penne. You can also hire Mountain Bikes and arrange caving trips. St Antonin has a bigger supermarket.
