Location description from owner

The Central Portugal region

This is the authentic Beiras region of rolling countryside, offers stunning mountain scenery, small bustling market towns and a wide range of river beaches. Our country home is a perfect base from which to explore the culture, gastronomy and natural beauty of this unspoilt area.

Penacova

Mountain village with beautiful views and wonderful scenery from the house and the surrounding 8 acres of land. There are many trails for walking and a river beach just 15 minutes from the house, here you will find picnic and bbq area and fresh, clean running river water ... just what you need on a hot sunny day!! There is a friendly local shop just 5 minutes drive from the house with a cafe right next door.

We have a delivery of fresh fish to the centre of the village twice weekly and bread delivery daily.

Things to do and surrounding areas:

Vila Nova de Poiares (15 minutes drive)

Good restaurants Estrella do Mo and Casa de Frango both of which serve good local food, you will also find a weekly Monday market and a supermarket, banks etc. There is also a great play and skatepark which has recently opened.

Penacova (10 minutes)

Cafes, supermarket, weekly Thursday market, banks and local shops, butchers etc.

Fantastic river beach where you can swim and relax. You can also hire canoes at this point with daily trips down the Mondego river which go as far as Coimbra 16 km away! The Mondego also has great fishing spots.

River Dao (15 minutes)

The river Dão sources in Portugal and runs for about 100 kilometres before emptying into the Mondego River, very near to Santa Comba Dão and Quinta da Abelenda (about 6 km). Its granite-sloped valley is situated in the "Região Demarcada do Dão", where the famous Dão wines are produced.

In 1981 the Aguieira dam was constructed in the Mondego river, just a few kilometres beyond the point where the river Dão empties into the Mondego, creating the artificial lake of Aguieira. The river Dão near Quinta do Rio Dão becomes a part of this lake. Its water level is not constant, depending on the annual rainfall and the use of water for irrigation, flood control and electrical power production.

Excelent for canoeing (motor boats are not allowed).

Cycling in Portugal over the "Ecopista do Dão"

The former railway "Linha do Dão", closed in 1988, connected Santa Comba Dão with the city of Viseu. In 2011 this railway was transformed into a spectacular bike and walking path, called the "Ecopista do Dão". With 49 km, it is not only the longest Ecopista of Portugal, but probably the most beautiful.

A large part of this path runs along the banks of the river Dão. Every bend in the river is followed by a bend in the Ecopista, with another view of the river. Because of the fact that it used to be a railway line, it is easy to cycle. There are no steep slopes in this mountainous area and you will be cycling in a very beautiful landscape.

Fishing

Fishing is allowed during the fishing-season and with a valid permit, which you can easily obtain during your stay here. Fishing is very popular here and there is plenty of fish to catch, such as carp, black bass, perch, boce and eel.

Cultural visits:

Coimbra - once the old capital, steeped in history and home to the oldest university in Europe with the beautiful Joanina Library (Biblioteca Joanina) a Baroque library. The walls are covered by two storied shelves, in gilded or painted exotic woods; the painted ceilings, by the Lisbon artists Simões Ribeiro and Vicente Nunes.

Aveiro - is on an estuary between the land and sea. The city is a maze of canals where the coloured prows of the moliceiros (seaweed boats) glide along.

For your first encounter of the city and its estuary, take a trip in one of these slender boats, a masterpiece of design. Sail through the canals that run the length of this unique landscape, and see the light reflected in hundreds of white cones of crystallised salt on the shore.

The blue tiled panels that line the railway station explain the history and customs of this region. As does the city’s museum, housed in a former convent where the Infanta Dona Joana sheltered, daughter of King Afonso V. Here you can take a “Journey through the baroque” that includes the Infanta Dona Joana’s tomb.

Made of tiny pieces of multicoloured inlaid marble, it is one of the most beautiful examples in Portugal.

Buçaco - The Serra do Buçaco mountain range is a botanical garden, containing around 700 native and exotic species of plants. It is protected by a 17th century papal decree that threatens to ex-communicate anyone who damages it. Of note among the many species are the Caucasus spruce, the Buçaco cedar and the Californian redwood (a huge tree that can reach up to 100 metres in height).
