Description from owner

Description

Olive Store Cottage was originally built as a 'kalivi', a farm building for storing produce, sheltering animals and for the owners to live when working the land.

In 2005 it was carefully and lovingly restored as a simple but beautiful holiday cottage. It has two large double bedrooms, one upstairs and one downstairs. A cosy living and dining room with log burning stove. There is a well equipped kitchen and family bathroom with shower on the ground floor. The upstairs bedroom has an ensuite toilet and washbasin. Outside a covered terrace to enjoy shady summer living and cool evenings.

The owners house is about 70 meters away, and they are on hand to help you enjoy your holiday. Altogether the property is set within 3 acres of gardens, olive grove, orchard and woodland. We overlook the Aegean Sea and in the distance the island of Evia.

At the head of a beautiful valley in the south of the Pelion peninsular, we are in a small hamlet called 'Randi'

At the head of a beautiful valley in the south of the Pelion peninsular, we are in a small hamlet called 'Randi' just 5 minutes by car from the sea side village and harbour of Platania and from the 'hidden mountain village' of Promyri. This is a fabulous area, relatively undeveloped. It offers visitors excellent beaches, fabulous nature and wildlife. It is a popular area for hiking at any time of year except for the hottest months when the clear warm sea, quiet sandy beaches and wonderful harbourside tavernas will tempt you. In the winter there is a small friendly ski resort at Hania on Mount Pelion.

The owners are happy to help you plan hikes in Pelion and in summer to take you on their small (6 metre) traditional sailing boat 'Kaliope' to explore hidden beaches.

Location description from owner

The Magnesia Region

The Greek mainland is often overlooked as a holiday destination, but if you really want to discover the real Greece still unspoiled by mass tourism there are many amazing places for you to discover. The Pelion Peninsular is found about half way between the cities of Thessaloniki and Athens. Mount Pelion is steeped in history and mythology. Just off it's southen tip lie the Islands of Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonnysos. When these beautiful islands are crowded in the summer time you can still enjoy Pelion without the crowds or inflated prices. With three distinctive coastlines it has a real island feel but with the advantage of easy access to the whole of mainland Greece.
The traditional unspoilt Greek holiday that you might think no longer exists is here waiting for you.

Pelion

The beautiful Pelion peninsula is situated in the prefecture of Magnesia in Thessaly, Central Greece, and offers visitors memories and holidays that they will never forget.

Stunning scenery, luscious nature, great sandy beaches, crystal clear sea, the snow capped mountain, spring water falls, winding cobble-stoned paths, ... all images that will stay with you forever and be cherished whenever you think back to your time spent here in Pelion.

Scattered across the Peninsula are over 70 Pelion villages, all varying in size, from the famous mountainous villages of Tsagarada, Milies and Lafkos, to the beautiful coastal villages of Horto, Milina and Platanias. Pelion is full of magic and scenes of extreme beauty, and is the ideal destination to visit all year round.

During the summer there are many lovely beaches you can visit, with sparkling crystal clean waters and golden sand. The blue waters of the Pagasitic Gulf and Aegean Sea are simply superb, and are perfect for bathing, watersports and relaxation.

Pelion is also cooler than other parts of Greece during the summer, especially, the more mountainous villages.

During the winter, there is the famous ski center of Agriolefkes near the village of Hania, where as well as as offering friendly skiing and snowboarding facilities, you can just enjoy a walk in the snow where you have wonderful sea views across the Aegean sea and also the Pagasitic Gulf. 30 minutes away you can be in the lively coastal city and port of Volos for a real unique mainland Greece experience.

“Our stay at the Olive Store Cottage was everything we hoped for and more”

Reviewed 6 Aug 2013

With 3 young boys under the age of 10 who had never flown or been abroad we were slightly nervous but the initial fears and the long drive was worth it. Chris and the beautiful Kathryn were the perfect hosts and the cottage was lovely with a few very welcome additions to the fridge when we arrived and a dvd player to keep the boys happy whilst my sister and I enjoyed the local Rose wine. Chris and Kathryn made the boys holiday truly magical with a boat trip they are still talking about. Be sure to listen to their recommendations about beaches, where to visit and ordering food. If you are of an impatient disposition beware as the Greek way is a little more relaxed. Embrace it and share your dishes. Although we didn't walk much I imagine it would make a great walking holiday if beaches weren't your thing. Chris and Kathryn have restored many of the traditional walkways and roads. The Olive Store Cottage and the surrounding area is worth travelling a little further so forget your all-inclusive and book a holiday that will be truly memorable.

We are delighted that you had such a good time staying with us and were able to discover some of the wonderful traditional ways of Greek summer life that still exists here. It was a pleasure meeting you and the boys and joining in some of the summer fun with our boating adventures and beach games... Thank you for your kind words and we hope to see you again at Olive Store Cottage.

“Ideal mix of natural seclusion, access to food and beach, & genial bilingual hosts”

Reviewed 14 Jun 2013

The hilly setting with its grasses, wild flowers, butterflies and olive trees has all the expected natural beauty of the South Pelion and a good sea view towards nearby Platania and Evia. The olive store has been nicely converted into a 2-bedroomed cottage just a short walk down from where the hosts live, they are happy either to let you do your own thing or to share their knowledge of the language, the community, the hiking paths they have helped clear, and anything else. Books, maps and pamphlets in the cottage help you plan. Games, TV, CDs and radio provided are unlikely to get much use, as is the rather small oven, since you have so much to explore. The obvious place to lounge and eat is Platania (try outside the Hotel Drossero Akrogiali first), and nearby Mikro. There was no visible problem caused by the language or economy and the taverna food was very good. Although we were not a young foursome we had a superb week here here enhanced by a feeling that we were welcomed by everybody. Energetic hikers would be pleased with the dappled shade of the kalderimi paths connecting villages, and beach-lovers the good choices of local beaches, and if you're lucky, you might be invited to sail with Chris and Kathryn on their boat Kaliope. Wifi was available on the owners terrace any time. Our week at The Olive Store was a delight.

Thank you for your review. It was a pleasure to have you staying in the cottage and we enjoyed your company very much. You have summed up the current climate here very well. Quiet, warm and friendly. Our area of South Pelion has plenty to offer visitors and will continue to do so. Anyone who takes the effort to come here, a little bit away from the popular tourist destinations, will be rewarded!

“A holiday we keep talking about again and again 5 years running”

Reviewed 27 May 2013

Chris and Kathrine always offered things to do,places to go and local tavernas for evening eating(inexpensive).always made us welcome to sail on their Cape Cutter(days out to Schiathos). Could do as much or as little as you chose and how glorious to walk into the warm water for a daily swim.

We really enjoy your visits at Olive Store Cottage. Our days out sailing together are always a highlight for us too, we hope to see you again soon.

“The best place we have ever stayed in Greece”

Reviewed 24 May 2013

After 20 years of coming to this fantastic part of Greece we first found the Olive Store cottage in 2010 and now try to visit twice a year. Chris and Kathryn who live close by are fantastic hosts and the cottage is superbly equipped and comfortable, yet very secluded and rural, with lovely views of the sea which is 5 minutes drive away. The sea is warm in the Autumn so swimming is great and the walking is fantastic.

It is always a pleasure when you come and stay at the cottage. We are looking forward to your next visit.

“A Magical Experience”

Reviewed 19 May 2013

This is a beautiful part of Greece combining beautiful beaches and country side all in one location. The cottage is lovely and spacious and very well equipped . It situated in a beautiful natural garden and has its own place to collect the local spring drinking water. If you go in June you will see beautiful dragon and damsel flies skimming across the streams. Chis and Kathryn are brilliant hosts and will show you the local Greek culture if you require. They will offer for the more adventurous of you a sail with them if their time and weather permits. Or if you want just a quiet holiday they will leave you to your own devices but will always be there to provide any useful experience . If you like local Greek Cuisine try Stathis Taverna in Promeri ask Chris and Kath about it. All in all a fantastic holiday and we will be back soon Barry + Hayley

Thank you so much for your kind words. You have captured the spirit and the magic of this place and had a great holiday. We hope to see you again soon at Olive Store Cottage.

“A very relaxed holiday cottage on a Greek mountainside.”

Reviewed 18 May 2013

We travelled by air from the UK to Thessaloniki. We then hired a car (pre-booked in the UK). The drive to Randi takes about 3 hours, but it is a very interesting journey, and we enjoyed a pleasant refreshment break at a motorway service station. We drove through the modern city of Volos, which is well worth a visit and only about an hours drive from the holiday cottage. On arrival at our holiday destination, we were greeted by Chris and Kathryn our hosts for our two week stay. We travelled with friends (another couple) and shared the cottage with them. This area of Pelion is a walkers paradise. Many of the walks include steep gradients, but if you have a car (recommended) it is easy to drive to many and varied locations no more than about 20 minutes away. The small Greek villages are very charming. Even if there is only one Taverna, you are sure of a warm welcome. The nearby fishing harbour of Platania is lovely with some very useful food shops and good Tavernas. In September the sea was great for swimming and lovely and warm. We found that a combination of self catering, and eating out works well.

Thank you for your comments, we very much enjoyed your stay with us. There are more and more walking opportunities in this area with new paths being opened by volunteer effort. We always enjoy sharing information about walking whether you want to walk independently or join (free of charge) organised walks. We hope you can visit us again soon at Olive Store Cottage.

“A place for contemplation, from which the busy world outside does not attract you anymore”

Reviewed 14 May 2013

Follow the guidance of Chris to visit the medieval orthodox churches hidden in the area. Visit the platea of Lavkos and survey the old stone masonry walls. Lunch in Ag Kiryaki the port of Trikeri at the top of the peninsula. Try the walks of the secret forest paths and alleys - the oldest communication routes of Pelion for donkeys, partisans and yourself.

Thank you for your kind comments. We enjoyed meeting you and hope to see you again at Olive Store Cottage.
