Description

Our cute, spacious and comfortable antique Java house with Balinese accents is the perfect retreat to rest, rejuvenate in the real Bali! Two extra big rooms provide a comfortabe retreat. A "Great Room" has living/lounging area, dining area and kitchen, while the bedroom has an office area. WiFi covers the entire property so guests take their laptops anywhere on the property. A day bed can accomodate and extra person or child.

We are away from the crowded streets and traffic noise of Ubud - a beautiful 12 minute drive through rice terraces and mountain views. This charming antique house is located in a typical Bali village, and is for people who want to be a bit away from the hustle and bustle of Ubud. Rather than the sounds of traffic and horns, you will hear sounds of life- frogs, chickens and crickets. You can watch rice being milled down the street. Here you can go for walks in the rice fields or the small village roads to see the real Bali.

There is an Ashtanga yoga retreat 100 meters from the house for yoga lovers. The hotel down the road allows guests to use their pool for a small fee. Gusti is a very popular tour guide and he can take you anywhere you wish, or he can advise on day trips, if you want to wander off on your own.

If there are ceremonies occurring during your visit (which is very probable since Bali is always having ceremonies), the villagers welcome our guests to observe. Gusti and his family are active members of the community and they will be happy to accompany you if you wish and explain what is going on...

Gusti and family (wife Ayu, four children, and mother and father) live next door to the house, and guests are always welcome to visit our compound, where we are happy to welcome you with coffee from our garden.

About Gusti: After graduating high school in 1994 I was fortunate to work in the first internet cafe in Ubud where I learned computer skills and English. Five years ago I was able to buy first car and began working as a driver. Now I am able to build a guest house in my family land. This is my dream come true - to be able to host visitors to Bali in my home area. I will do my best to ensure you a memorable stay in Ubud.

Here are some reviews we have had during the last six months:

A beautiful and authentic experience. Gusti and his wife, Ayu (sp?) take such great pride and care of their home. It is beautifully constructed with many details throughout, an exceptional outdoor shower/bathroom, kitchen and dining room, day bed, and separate bedroom with the necessary mosquito nets and ceiling fans. It's a free standing home, with a wall and gate surrounding the property, so you absolutely have privacy. Gusti and Ayu are next door and will come check on you every night to see if there is anything they can help with, and also ask what you would like for breakfast and at what time. (Try the banana pancakes, they are amazing!)
I can't say enough good things, everything was very easy. For example, Ayu noticed we had rice to cook and let us borrow her rice cooker, and by let us borrow, I mean she came over and prepared it for us because we didn't know how to work it. Gusti also arranged for us to have two scooters, with helmets, and I think that is a must if you stay here. It's about a 15 minute ride to Ubud, but a beautiful ride with some great places to stop on the way. (Try Organic Warung, it's on your way to Ubud, on the right side of the road, set in a rice paddy with delicious juice and food.)
I did not travel alone on this trip, but as a female, I would feel completely safe staying here. You are in a Balinese village and everyone was very kind. Speaking of, be ready for roosters, dogs, frogs, and pigs making noises at all hours. I brought ear plugs to sleep and was fine. Also be mindful that this is an open air concept, meaning the wall is not sealed to the roof, so bugs so get in, but Ayu cleans every day and it's really impressive how clean she keeps it. I would fail miserably at that task. Sheets and towels were clean, as well, it really was great!
I will be returning here some day and would not hesitate to recommend their home to anyone looking for an experience in Ubud.

You'll be impressed when you enter Gusti's guesthouse - that's for sure. The place has a very bohemian, authentic and antique look, the woodwork of the walls alone is something you'll want to take pictures of. This traditional Javanese house is a lot more spacious than it looks in the photos since the roof is very high, but it's still cozy. The ambiance is very pleasant, so it's easy to get yourself comfortable wherever you sit or lay down. The open air bathroom is huge and there's even a separate room for the wardrobe. A nice desk sits in the corner of the bedroom in case you need to do some work and the wi-fi is good at least in Bali's standards. The bed linens and towels are of high quality and so are the dishes and other interior elements - everything is new and tasteful. The villa is a fair distance from the center of Ubud, about 15 min on a motorbike, but the ride is pleasant and scenic. You'll see villages, rice paddies, temples and even mount Batur when the weather is clear. Gusti and his wife Ayu are proud of their guesthouse and it shows in the way they take care of it. Ayu cleans the house to perfection every day, she also took care of our laundry and even did some grocery shopping in the local market. Gusti has no problem arranging someone to come and fix the broken water heater at 9 p.m. on a Saturday at minutes' notice. The hosts live next door but they're never intrusive - they feel more like good helpful neighbors than owners of the guesthouse you're staying in. Gusti and Ayu pay attention to details and are always kind and smiling, which made our stay both luxurious and pleasant. After staying in this guesthouse for a week we returned a week later and this says it all about how good our experience was.
