“Thoroughly enjoyable stay in very comfortable accommodatio”

Reviewed 4 Jun 2014

We were greeted with a very warm welcome by Gillian. The location of the traditional house proved ideal for us, very quiet but in easy reach of many good places to visit. The house itself was very well equipped and felt comfortable. We would recommend ordering the meal which Gillian will provide on arrival, it was excellent. We plan to go back if we can as we enjoyed our stay so much.

“One of the charming places I have ever been in my life!”

Reviewed 11 Nov 2013

This charming house was fabulous. It was modern and everything was in complete working order. The owner offered exceptional service and was completely helpful in every way. The location was in one of the most beautiful areas I have ever seen. The owner offered dinner and then presented 4 course gourmet delights with local wine that fit each course. I would highly recommend this property and I would consider going back again.

“Excellent accomodation”

Reviewed 28 Jun 2013

We stayed at Les Vieux Chenes for a week in the middle of June and the accommodation more than matched our expectations. On arrival the property owner Gillian was on hand to provide us with a detailed explanation of things to do, where to eat and information relating to the property. In addition there was a very generous welcome pack of wine, beer, pate, olives, jam etc for us to enjoy. Unfortunately the next day was the only day of our week when the weather was warm enough to enjoy the swimming pool and Barbeque but we had plenty of warning of the poor weather to come and made the most of these excellent facilities while we could. The weather was so poor we were housebound for a couple of days and Gillian even put on the central heating for us although we did not ask her to do so. The property has all the facilities you need including a washing machine and dishwasher both of which were very useful. The highlight of our stay was the meal Gillian cooked for us on our last evening which was absolutely superb. We have eaten at many Michelin starred restaurants and the meal matched them in every respect. We were treated to a meal of Foie Gras, Trout, Confit Duck and peaches in Armagnac and all washed down by three excellent wines from the region. If you at planning to stay at Les Vieux Chenes you must take advantage of Gillian’s cooking. The Wi-Fi worked without a hitch and our deposit was returned the day after we left. We would definitely recommend the property to our friends and very much enjoyed our stay despite the weather.

Owner's reply: We are very pleased that you and your wife had a good holiday despite being here when this area was on maximum weather warnings, battered by the worst storms for many, many years with so many local towns & villages being devastated by floods. Happily, the house is on a hilltop. As a chef, I love finding the best local produce for our guests and serving it in the private dining room, adjacent to the rental house, so thank you for your kind words about our food.

“We'll be back”

Reviewed 7 Jul 2012

This was our first holiday in France and it exceeded our expectations. The house had everything you could think of and then more. Little touches like beer and wine in the fridge was great after a long drive. The pool and gardens were great and had lovely views. Location: plenty to do locally and further afield, a week wasn't long enough. Local towns had everything in that you would need. Gillian was always close by if needed and her knowledge of the area and things to do/see was more than helpful. Once we found the house it wasn't a problem but GPS co-ordinates would have been an advantage. We will definately be back.

“Gorgeous accommodation, splendid location”

Reviewed 22 Jun 2012

Apart from the lovely and spacious house, it's most complete equipment and it's garden and pool with impressive views, it's the location that makes this property unique. Easy walks through quiet countryside start right at your front door. Short car rides will take you to other walks (some marked), f.e. along the river Gave d'Oloron, and villages worth a stroll. Day trips will get you to impressive mountainous areas in the Pyrénées, into Spain as well. To get an inspiring impression of the immediate surroundings: go to Google Maps and search for Monein, France. Go West on D2 and south on the second road left: Castet/Chemin de Coustette. Go South as far as Chemin de Crêtes and look back North, the first house on the left of the road with it's pool is Les Vieux Chênes. Wine lovers will appreciate the local appellation Jurancon moelleux, a semi-sweet white. The supposedly best wine maker of this variety has it's farm within walking distance. Tasting and buying at Domaine Cauhapé: www.jurancon-cauhape.com. The dry version is also very rich and pleasant. Of course they come with a price: from reasonable to prohibitive. The sweet ones (moelleux) should be tasted with a blue cheese like Bleu d'Auvergne or Fourme d'Ambert - you will be delighted. Our week in May proved too short and we would certainly like to get back some time...

“Un gîte familial de qualité en Béarn”

Reviewed 30 Jul 2011

“Quality accommodation and service helped us have a relaxing and enjoyable holiday”

Reviewed 4 Jul 2011

We stayed at Les Vieux Chenes for a week in early June and found it a most relaxing experience. We had booked dinner for the first evening to save having to look for a restaurant. This was a good decision as the meal was most enjoyable, good value for money and a great start to our holiday. Additionally, the provision of a "Welcome Pack" of wine, beer and snacks certainly did make us feel welcome. The rooms were spacious and well-decorated. Overall, the house, while very traditional, has plenty of mod-cons. Even though the weather wasn't brilliant while we were there, we still managed some good walks, both directly from the property and further afield. We also found this holiday rental very handy for local towns, both for shopping and sight-seeing. Pau was especially attractive for both these activities. There are also vineyards and cheese producers nearby, a couple of which we visited. This is a lovely part of France with more attractions than we had time to visit this time. We will certainly be back and would be happy to stay at Les Vieux Chenes again.
