Description from owner

The apartment is located in a prime location in the Marasusa holiday village. The holiday village is perched on top of a hill in the village of Paraghelia, overlooking the old town of Tropea and it's new marina (3 minutes drive way). Tropea has been regarded as Italy's best kept secret, and named by The Sunday Times as its top beach holiday destination. From the terrace of the apartment you can take in the panoramic views of the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Aeolian Islands and the breathtaking sunsets. The apartment offers a relaxing, peaceful holiday set amongst beautiful flowers and plants but yet still only just a few minutes drive away from the sandy beaches, restaurants, bars and bustling narrow streets of the historic town of Tropea. Facilities include a beautiful shared swimming pool, which has a shallow pool area for children, jacuzzi, sun beds and showers.

The Calabria region

Marasusa is located on the hillside above the village of Parghelia on the west coast, in the region of Calabria. Calabria is the southern most region of Italy and also the poorest in Italy. It is bordered on the west by theTyrrhenian Sea and the east by the Ionian sea. It is a narrow peninsula separated in the north from the rest of Italy by the Pollino mountains, which are rugged, with a lot of wooded area of pine forests.

The La Sila mountains are in the central area. Here there are lakes and coniferous forest. The area is popular for boating, picnics and skiing. The Aspromonte mountains in the south and are full of man made terraces that slope down to the sea.

The lower land in Calabria has been used for agriculture for centuries growing citrus fruits, vines, chestnut trees and olives (which make up about 70%of all tree crops). The climate ranges from about 8 °C (46 °F) to 30 °C (86 °F) in the coastal areas. The mountain areas have cold snowy winters and hot dry summers.

Regio Calabria in the south is the main port. The A3 motorway goes all the way down through Calabria to Regio. There are also 2 main highways. The SS18 is the one on the west coast used in conjunction with the A3 to get from Lamezia airport to Marasusa. This is the nearest airport to the Marasusa holiday village. The other main airports in Calabria are Regio and Crotone.

Tropea is the adjoining town to Parghelia where Marasusa is located. Tropea with its narrow cobbled streets, is famous for its red onions, its wonderful beach and its church (Santa Maria dell'Isola) . Here there are numerous restaurants around every corner, located in the ancient buildings or on the cobbled pavements. The beachfront and nearby marina hosts many pizzerias and seafood restaurants, rental boats, organised boat trips and a diving school. A must is a boat trip to the Aeolian islands, particularly Stromboli, which is very visible from the terrace at the apartment. In high season, Tropea seems to have a festival every week, and celebrates everything from Blues and Jazz to the locally grown red onions.

Other places to visit are Pizzo located between Lamezia and Tropea is famous for its Tartufo ice-cream and its Spaghetti Al Nero.

Regio in the south is famous for its art nouveau buildings and its shopping. It can be reached by train from Tropea.

Sicily can be reached by car or catching the train from Tropea. The train goes on the ferry across to Sicily.

As you drive along the roads you will see many road side stalls selling the famous Cipolla rossa di Tropea (red onion). It is well worth stopping here and buying the local produce as well as the red onion try the local Nduja (a spicy sausage- used on pizza or in pasta dishes to add some spice. Often you will be invited to sample the local wine, definitely worth stocking up on at around 2-3 euros a bottle, and great for drinking while sitting on the terrace at Marasusa while taking in the sunset.
