The Paphos District

Paphos is one of the most beautiful, ancient towns in Cyprus. Once the capital of the island of Cyprus during Roman times, today it is a small harbour slowly becoming an attractive tourist destination.

The history of Paphos dates back to the Neolithic period and to the Greek Goddess Aphrodite who emerged from the sea at this very site. Many rulers have controlled Paphos, that include the Mycenaean’s, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Byzantines, Venetians, Turkish and the British.

Once a major port, it lost its position during the British rule.

Today, however, Paphos is evolving as a major tourist centre with the help of government and private sector investment. Dams and proper roads have been built, and money has been spent on development of hotels, restaurants and luxury villas to attract tourists. Kato Pafos, is the main attraction of the city as all the hotels and villas are based there and it is also nearby the sea.

The architecture of Paphos is very rural, but extremely beautiful. Nature has remained undisturbed and one can find here a variety of astonishing gorges, long stretched beautiful coastlines and nature trails for outdoors activities.

Paradise Gardens

Anthestiria Flower Festival

The Anthestiria Flower Festival is the celebration held to welcome the arrival of spring. To rejoice and enjoy nature’s beauty, a parade of flowers floats and people carrying fresh flowers travel down from Poseidon Avenue till the old harbour of Kato Paphos. This festival has an historical and mythological value when banquets were arranged every four years as a mark of distinction to the God of theatre and parties, Dionysus. Similar to ancient feasts the Anthestiria festival also has a theme. The word Anthestiria is derived from the word ‘anthos’ meaning flower and the festival is organized to celebrate the rebirth of man and nature.

Address: Paphos Parade

Paphos Aphrodite Festival

Paphos Aphrodite Festival is a cultural event where the organizers invite a well-known opera troupe in town. The event takes place in front of the medieval castle in Paphos and has witnessed many past harmonious performances like Verdi's "La Traviata" and "Aida", Bizet's "Carmen" and Puccini's "Turandot". We went to this last time we were in paphos and it was an amazinig experience so see an opera in such amazing surrounding well worth a visit if a bit pricey.

Acropolis

Made up of ancient ruins and buildings, the Acropolis is situated near the new Paphos Lighthouse. Built in the second century, the Odeon is made of pure limestone. Today it is used to stage musical and live performances. The structure is semi circular in shape with 12 rows of seats. It occupied an important place in ancient Cypriot history and even today with the influx of tourists its value has not diminished. To the south of the Odean are the remains of the Roman temple of Asclepius, God of Medicine and to the north are remains of ancient town walls.

The Mosaics of Paphos

Situated near the Paphos harbour, are some superbly preserved mosaic remains dating from third to fifth century A.D. These mosaic floors can be seen in the Villa of Dionysos, Orpheus and Aion, and the Villa of Theseus, in the form of pavements. A farmer accidentally discovered these mosaics while he was ploughing his field. Till today, the villas are being excavated and the mosaics that are being found depict scenes from Greek mythology and are made from small cubes of marble stone along with glass paste. These small marble cubes are called tesserae. The wide range of these beautiful designs can be seen in the Villa of Dionysos where nearly 5,985 sq.ft of area consisting of 14 rooms are covered with the mosaics.

Tombs of the Kings

As the name suggests, no kings are buried here. But actually it’s the resting place of 100 Ptolemaic aristocrats who died in Paphos between 3 B.C. and 3 A.D. Located northwest of Paphos harbour, near the Coral bay the structure consists of solid rock formations featuring Doric pillars and walls decorated with frescoes. Ongoing archaeological excavations have discovered the Church of Paleoekklisia, which depict Byzantine frescoes.

Adonis Bath

The history behind Adonis Baths relates to the love story between Aphrodite and Adonis. Both Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love and Persephone, the Goddess of Underworld, loved Adonis. This led to a fight between Aphrodite and Persephone and the court ruled that Adonis should spend one third of his time with Aphrodite, one third with Persephone and the remaining is reserved for him. But Adonis cheated on Persephone by spending the one-third time reserved for him, with Aphrodite. Persephone got angry and got him killed by a wild boar. After hearing the news, Aphrodite ran towards Adonis and while doing so she bled from her feet. The route through which Aphrodite ran and where blood dripped from her feet has caused lilies to grow, so goes the saying.

Paphos Fort

The Paphos Fort or castle is located at the Kato Paphos harbor. It was originally a Byzantine fort, but was remodeled by the Lusignans. But in 1570 the Venetians destroyed the castle, but during the Ottoman rule the castle was restored to it old glory, expanded and reinforced. Built of strong and large stones, the castle is connected to the harbor via an arched bridge. There are very few windows but the view from the top of castle is superb. The fort is noted in the UNESCO list of world heritage sites and is fully protected.

All these are a small selection of what you can do while in paphos. There is also the famous bar street where you will find many bars and clubs where you can drink and dance the night away. here is a link to such a guide http://www.paphos.com/v/nightlife/

“Nice stay”

Reviewed 11 Mar 2013

LOCATION Very quiet and clean complex with picturesque territory. 1o minutes walk to the harbor with all its cafes, bars, shops and Papantonio supermarket. We used the bus sometimes (N 608 from the harbor – 1 euro). THE APARTMENTS It’s large enough for four of us (two adults and two children) and well equipped. Bob He is superman!!! It took him only five minutes to come to the place and help us with our little problem))) He’s very sweet!!! And there wasn’t any problem founding him on arrival. THE INTERNET ACCESS I used leap wirelees network (http://www.leapwifi.com). The access point seems to be not far from the apts so the signal is good. PAPHOS We liked Paphos. Even with two children managed to see a lot. It’s great in winter – warm and not crowdy. The weather is much more better than is Moscow))) we stayed for a month ( February- March) and enjoyed it very much!

we have just come back from paphos, this apartment is brilliant, everything you could wish for, to make your stay there excellant. the views, the people, the food, the whole place is brilliant. w e could not fault it at all. Weather was getting hotter by the day. It is ten minutes from everything, shops, seafront, pubs/bars harbour. The buses run to everyhere for £1 euro, excellant service. The people are so friendly and helpfull, they all talk english. Food is amazing and the choice is great, 3 course meal for £3 euros, cant beat that. Bob is very nice and extremely helpful and goes above & beyond to help you all the way. Will defo be going back ASAP. On 3rd floor so not for the elderly or disabled. Thanks Paul, it was amazing.

“A very picturesque and friendly place to visit.”

A very comfortable appartment and near all ammenities. The trips out on the boat and coach to Aphrodites baths were very pleasant and worththe money. Food, eating out was marvelous and very fresh. The appartment is very practical to have days out and eat at home or have breakfast, with beautiful views form the balcony. it would be helpful to have clear instruction on what is expected on leaving appartment, that is do we clean sheets and towels. More towels please for the appartment and perhaps coloured ones as cream for multiple use not practical. The appartment could have been a little fresher on arrival as it didnt give impression that it had been cleaned. Bob was very helpful, but on arrival to airport couldn't find him. Written Instructions on services and how to manage hot water, washing machne etc would be helpful as on arrival, I received a list on what wasnt working or what had been a struggle for previous tenants and actually everything was fine. Overall a very comfortable, popular place and residents in complex helpful. Very peaceful and relaxing and somehwere that one could visit on their own, with family or friends. I would rate this stay as very good.

“Fantastic apartment - quiet location yet close to all resort facilities”

Reviewed 29 Jun 2011

We had a fantastic two weeks at this apartment and will definetly return again. The apartment is large for a one bedroom apartment and very well equipped. There were only two of us staying but it could comfortably accomodate four people. It benefits from a large spacious balcony which gets the sun in the morning and shade in the afternoon. This was perfect for us as it gave you some respite from the heat of the day. Kitchen was extremely well equipped for self catering we ate out mainly but if you wanted to cook there was plenty of equipment for it. The swimming pool is large and there are plenty of loungers as well as a small baby pool. At times we were the only two people at the pool. The apartment is in a well maintained complex in a quiet location but only a few minutes walk to bars, restaurants and shops. Probably about a 10 minute stroll to the harbour in Paphos. We did not use a taxi once while we were there as we found it to be a pleasant stroll to the harbour and back each evening. The owner offers a welcome pack of groceries for your arrival and also the services of a local representative to collect you from the airport. I would recommend both services and Bob who came to get us and take us back to the airport was very helpful and friendly. He even took us to the supermarket for our groceries on the first day. Overall a fantastic apartment.
