Location description from owner

The Alentejo region

The cottage is located in Pegarias de Baixo, a small residential area just outside of Palmela. The area is mainly Portuguese residents. The old village of Palmela lies on a hill in the heart of of some of Portugals best wine country, which encapsulates the Arrábida Mountains and national park.Palmela is also known for its superb cuisine and its wines of great quality especially the famous Periquita grape. This wine has won international recognition and in honour of this the Festa das Vindimas a Vintage Festival, that is held every year at the beginning of September. With the local gastronomy you will be spoilt for choice. There are many great beaches in the area along the Setubal peninsular, Praia de Albarquel, Praia da Figueirinha and Praia dos Coelhos to name but a few.The Castelo de Palmela is a huge fortified complex that stands atop the eastern edge of the Serra de Arrabida hills. This high vantage point of the castle provides stunning views over both the Tagus and Sado estuaries and made it of strategic importance for early Portuguese dynasties but surprisingly the castle experienced very little actual fighting since the Christian conquest of the Moors in the 12th century.

Palmela

Arrábida Natural Park (Portuguese: Parque Natural da Arrábida) is a natural park located on the northern shore of the Sado River estuary in Portugal. Founded in 1976 and covering 108 square kilometres (42 sq mi), it is one of the 30 areas which are officially under protection in the country. The park covers the Arrábida Hills, the Mediterranean-like vegetation and microclimate of which resemble Adriatic locations such as Dalmatia. The highest point in the park is the Serra da Arrábida at an elevation of 499 metres (1,637 ft). Two of the parks beaches—Portinho da Arrábida and Figueirinha—are popular among the inhabitants of Lisbon and Setúbal. Over looking the two beaches is the Convento da Arrabida, which was established in the 16th century and today is managed by the Fundação Oriente. The long sandy peninsula of Troia lies to the south of Setubal and is connected by a regular ferry service that crosses the Sado Estuary. The northern end of Troia has been developed into an exclusive complex with marina, casino and hotels while the south leads to quieter and less developed beaches. The three beaches close to the ferry landing are Praia de Tria Mar, Praia Bico dos Lulas and Praia do Troia Gale while the larger Praia Atlantica covers much of the central coastline of Troia. The beaches are a great place to head as there is always space to be found.

“Stunning holidays in Palmela”

Reviewed 1 Aug 2015

Mandy gave us a warm welcome. The house is fully equipped. We felt very comfortable in this cosy, bright and convenient place. The Garden is spacious with a nice patio and a lemon tree. The neighbourhood is quiet and safe. It's a good base to explore the penninsula of Setubal, Arrabida Nature Reserve, Lisbon and the Costa Azul with it's nice beaches. The owner Henrik lives near and brought us eggs from his own hens. The place was clean, fresh beddings and towels were provided after a week. We were very happy! the house's interior is nicely done up. As the pictures are accurate our expectations were more than fulfilled. Mandy and Henrik were very good hosts. We had a super stay in Palmela! Thank you very much.
