The Central Portugal region

Palmela, the town's name comes from her Roman founder, Cornelius Palma (Palmella). Palmela, once a fortress, was conquered by the Portuguese in the 12th century, from Muslim invaders. It is located up a hill in the Arrábida area, and it's a semi-rural town.

The town's ex libris is the castle (Castelo de Palmela), which offers a unique view over the whole region of Setúbal's Peninsula, Lisbon, and the Atlantic Coast.

Palmela

Arrábida Natural Park (Portuguese: Parque Natural da Arrábida) is a natural park located on the northern shore of the Sado River estuary in Portugal. Founded in 1976 and covering 108 square kilometres (42 sq mi), it is one of the 30 areas which are officially under protection in the country.

The park covers the Arrábida Hills, the Mediterranean-like vegetation and microclimate of which resemble Adriatic locations such as Dalmatia. The highest point in the park is the Serra da Arrábida at an elevation of 499 metres (1,637 ft). Two of the park's beaches—Portinho da Arrábida and Figueirinha—are popular among the inhabitants of Lisbon and Setúbal. Over looking the two beaches is the Convento da Arrabida, which was established in the 16th century and today is managed by the Fundação Oriente

“Beautiful villa and lovely holiday”

Reviewed 29 Jun 2015

I can not fault the villa in any way at all, the beautiful is exactly as pictured and is beautiful - a real home away from home! Pool was very cold at first but after 5 mins of splashing around and swimming soon warmed up! All towels including beach towels were included which was fantastic! Unfortunately, we struggled to find things around us to do. We visited Sesimbra twice, first for some lunch and a wonder round and the second was to go out with Bolhas Tours to see Dolphins and go fishing (highly recommend for a fun day out). We visited Setubal however, we didn't realise if we drove further down that there was a lovely little town with some cute shops and many restaurants and cafes. Our satnav took us to by the beach where we found a fantastic restaurant that we visited twice called Rockalot Aquabay - beautiful view and blankets given when the wind picks up! Don't bother visiting the local areas on Sunday's as all the local shops are closed. We struggled for restaurants close by to the villa however, we are fussy eaters so that caused some problems - however, we had a lovely meal at Culto Cafe which is by the castle and the food at Four'k is nice but it's very small inside and opening hours are bizarre. We all visited Lisbon for a day however, as we had no idea what we were looking for and our designated driver was getting bored we didn't get to the main area in Lisbon where all the shops and cafes are. If you are looking for a beautiful peaceful escape from reality then this villa is perfect. I would suggest learning some basic Portuguese words as a lot of the local shops and restaurants couldn't understand a lot of what we had said or asked - hand gestures became the main way of explaining! Loads of supermarkets around and all food is very cheap. Villa also has some pool toys and lilos, bikes and table tennis! As well as board games and books indoors! Mandy was fantastic also and text us a few days in to check we were okay and enjoying ourselves, the villa was clean and tidy and just really beautiful and homely! Would definitely recommend!
