Location description from owner

The Balearic Islands region

Mallorca is a Spanish Mediterranean island that manages to house everything a traveller could dream of. From innumerable sandy beaches holding European Blue Flags for their quality, to the World Heritage Tramontana mountain range, a night life second to none, unspoilt rural villages, empty coves and the Maritime national parks of Cabrera and Dragonera.

The entire island becomes a Mecca for cycling from the start of Autumn through to the end of Spring because of the continual good weather. With more than 300 sunny days per year, the Balearic Islands are a paradise for those who love being outside in the fresh air. There are plentiful golf courses, tennis and paddle courts, horse riding stables and endless hiking routes. Mallorca is a haven for all water sports including sailing, canoeing, kite surfing, stand-up paddle, wind surfing, water skiing and scuba diving.

The climate breeds a bustling culture of pavement cafés throughout the year. Once the heat of summer is over and life returns to its normal leisurely pace, every town and city area holds its local fiestas. Every important Saint's day sparks a fresh cause for celebration and processions - especially Palma's Saint Sebastian in January which falls only a couple of weeks after the Spanish Christmas celebrations when the Three Kings sail in on their boat, showering the local children with sweets as huge floats wind their way through the city streets.

The Saint Sebastian celebrations span an entire week. Local and internationally-renown bands play in the squares at night and it ends with impressively loud fireworks. February arrives with an explosion of colour as Carnival comes to town. The many Easter parades around the ancient Cathedral and the day of Saint Anthony, when all the local pets and wild life are lead through the streets to be blessed, are sights not to be missed. The final fiesta before the real heat of summer is at the end of June, the fiesta of San Juan, where the entire population heads for the beaches to enjoy barbecues throughout the evening before there is a mad dash into the sea at midnight. This is an island where everybody, from the very youngest to the most-loved granny, is included in the fun.

Palma de Mallorca

The city of Palma was recently voted "Best Place in the World to Live" by the Sunday Times - and we can vouch that it was a worthy winner. Palma bursts with relaxed pavement cafes, gourmet eating places, every type of art gallery, shops for all pockets and tastes, and a bustling port where you can take a ferry to neighbouring islands or just enjoy wandering around staring at the super-yachts.

From the Plaza España there are buses and trains to every corner of the island, so a stay in Palma allows you to see more than just the city.

The quiet cobbled street of Calle Polvorin winds upwards to Bellver Forest and the castle. This elevation makes the area cooler than the city centre itself, so making it the perfect place to stay even in the height of summer. A stroll downhill leads to the bus routes into the city or out to the beaches of Cala Mayor and Illetas, while the bike tracks along the sea front run along the rocks and beaches all the way to Arenal and beyond.

The area is full of hidden treasures such as the Bar Corona in Calle Josep Villalonga which offers the most beautiful courtyard in which to enjoy an evening drink or light meal.
