The Ionian Islands region
Athina apartments are located at the beginning of Paleokastritsa on the one hand it is a peaceful area with all the green around it which like you are in paradise and on the other hand is not very far from the crowded part of the area (bars). Very close to the resort there is a great variety of taverns, restaurants, swimming pools open to the public and super markets. There is a variety of water sports for someone who loves them such as water-skiing, scuba diving, windsurfing etc. A nice idea for people who love the sea but do not do any water sports is either rent a self-motor boat or go on a boat trip to the caves of the area with one of the local boatmen. One of the caves is called Nausica's cave and that's because people believe that Odesseus ended up in that cave right before he returned home.I n addition if you like the sea life you can either go on a trip with on of the glass bottom boats and the submarine or visit the Aquarium of the area which has tanks with fish from the Mediterranean Sea and some reptiles.
There are two festivals during summer one in July and on in August but the most important event is in August, usually on the first Sunday of August and it is called "Vakarola" varka= boat. This event is the representation of Odysseus arrival in the area. Thousands of people watch this event and every year it gets more and more famousRelegious people can visit the monastery of Paleokastritsa which is the most visited monatery on the island.
The Monastery is dedicated to Panagia (Virgin Mary) of Paleokastritsa is situated on a green hill above the main beach of Paleokastritsa. In the monastery there is a small ecclesiastical museum with rare Byzantine icons, holy books and other relics you will also have the chance to see a traditional olive oil press.
Paleokastritsa village has a land area of 48.379 km² and is located on the west coast of Corfu just south of Angelokastro and it is a place much loved by locals because it is a place where their life work and dreams come together to form a sense of home. The name Paleokastritsa derives from the Paleo Kastro meaning Old Castle implying that a castle indeed existed once in the area, but its remains have since been lost and in its place stands the Monastery of Paleokastritsa at the peak of a hill. The castle acted as a fortification for the safety of the residents of the Paleo Hora which means 'old town', from pirates and other threats.
The first tourists visited Paleokastritsa in the 1960s and although nowadays the tourist growth is replacing the old rural economy as well as the fishery, the locals remain hospitable and friendly and are trying to maintain their culture and traditions.
Paleokastritsa encompasses six magical beaches and Ag Spyridon is the main beach . The names of these beaches derive from the Christian tradition, the majority being named after a saint. From this we have inferred that many churches existed in the area and that the inhabitants were deeply religious. Today 2 churches exist in Paleokastritsa, Agios Spyridon and the Church of the Virgin Mary in the Monastery.
