Description from owner

Casa Josephina is a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom 18th century town home ideally located on a quiet street between the public park/garden and Piazza Libertà, the center of activity. It is a short 2-3 minute walk to most everything.

The home is comprised of all 3 levels of the property (a rarity) plus 2 terraces and is larger than most town homes offered for rent in Ostuni.

The ground level is a garage and storage area, is fully tiled, and includes a sofa bed with additional seating, 1 bathroom and a washing machine. It was a separate house but now provides room to store your suitcases and other belongings, providing more room in the living areas. While the garage may be used, due to the narrowness of the street, I would not plan on it unless you have a very small auto and have superior parking skills. There are many parking areas with much easier access nearby. The bathroom includes a large shower area as well as toilet and sink

The 1st level includes a lounge, 2 bedrooms

The 1st level includes a lounge, 2 bedrooms and the 2nd bathroom. All living areas include double-height exposed stone vaulted ceilings and antique chandeliers. The house is modern, yet romantic.

The lounge, with original tile flooring, includes a sofa/chaise that converts to a very large bed, easily accommodating 2 adults. The lounge also includes a separate leather chair and entertainment equipment, including flat screen tv, a blue-ray/dvd/cd player and separate stereo system that includes an ipod dock and accommodates most other inputs.

The main bedroom includes a large “matrimonial bed” (queen/double size) outfitted with high-quality linens. The 2nd bedroom includes a “piazza e mezza” size bed (1.5 x single) which is great for a single adult or 2 children. It can also accommodate 2 “very cozy” adults. The 2nd bedroom also includes a large dresser and a built-in closet, providing plenty of storage for all guests. The bathroom includes a shower, toilet and vanity area, including a cabinet to store all your toiletries.

The 2nd level includes a large well-equipped kitchen and dining area, with seating for 6, and star vaulted exposed stone ceilings. The kitchen leads out to the lower level terrace, which includes another dining area and a large umbrella for times when shade is desired. Stairs lead to the upper terrace with a sofa/lounge area, additional seating and spectacular panoramic views of the sea, cathedral and centro storico. The views of the town illuminated in the evening are especially stunning. The terraces are flat and tiled.

The property has heating and air conditioning.

Location description from owner

The Puglia region

Puglia (or Apulia), located along the Adriatic heel of Italy, is one of the most beautiful, unspoiled, regions of Italy with over 400km of coastline. With its relatively warm weather throughout the year, many Italians from the north (as well as ex-pats!) choose this region for their holiday, but not so many as to spoil it.

The region is known for its small towns, wonderful beaches/coastline and great food and wine. The people are friendly and helpful and an English-speaker can always be found nearby. An advantage of Puglia as a site for your holiday is its low cost of living/vacationing. Food and wine prices, as well as lodging, can easily be 1/3rd of what you will find in Rome or Florence. A nice antipasti lunch for 2 for lunch can be purchased for around €6. A complete dinner for 2 at a fine local restaurant, including wine, starts at under €20. You can have a container filled with your choice of wine at a local winery for €1 to €2 per litre (after tasting them all, of course!).

Find a location in the center of the region (Ostuni is our favourite and is perfectly located for exploring the area), and almost all of the towns and sites of the region are within a 1 hour drive. See a list of some highlights in the section below.

For those who want to explore further areas after their time in Puglia, from nearby port towns there are ferries to Greece, Croatia, northern Italy and other countries. Ryanair now flies into Bari and Brindisi, offering another option for quick jaunts to other locations.

Those options being said, our recommendation would be to relax, unwind, recharge and enjoy all that Puglia has to offer! Live La Dolce Vita!

Ostuni Centre

Ostuni is known as The White City (La Citta Bianca) due to its whitewashed buildings reflecting some its Greek and Moorish heritage. It is located on a hilltop approximately 8km from the sea. With nothing but olive groves and grape vines between it and the sea, it offers stunning views of the Adriatic, easy access to local beaches via a 6-10 minute drive, access to most of Puglia and surrounding areas within a 1 hour drive and a very walkable city (15-20 minute walk from one side of the town to the other) with many high-quality/low priced restaurants and bars and historic sights.

The Centro Storico of Ostuni offers winding stone alleys and pathways terrific architecture as well as local boutiques, shops and eateries. Shop to 3am during summer months. Find a local pizzeria or visit a Michelin rated restaurant (Osteria del Tempo Perso) or anything in between. Grab a pint of Guinness at pub or visit Riccardo Caffé for the latest club-style music and drinks. The Centro Storico is the place to be most nights.

The main commercial area offers designer shops, restaurants and supermarkets. It is easily reachable and walkable form other areas of the town

The Saturday market is not to be missed. It is one of the largest in southern Italy offering everything from fruits, vegetables, cheese, meat and seafood to clothing and household goods. A smaller version of the market is held on Wednesday. In addition, an antique/flea market is held just outside the public garden the second Sunday of the month.

Churches within the city are on the list of proposed UNESCO World Heritage sites and the city and Centro Storico are lined with historical and architectural gems.

There festivals held throughout the year at the Public Garden/Park as well as Piazza Liberta, culminating in La Cavalcata di Sant'Oronzo in late August.

There is much to see and do within the town or you may wish to venture to some of the nearby locations listed below. Following is a list of some highlights.

Beaches (Too many to list. Many are “blue flag”. Below is a sampling of our favourites)
Villanova (8 minute drive) Small beach/harbor, with nice restaurants and bars
Pilone I and II (12 minute drive) Beautiful beaches with an ancient tower.
Torre Canne (20 minute drive) Touristy area, but fun restaurant tents on the beach selling fresh grilled seafood at low prices
Torre Guaceto (25 minute drive) WWF protected nature reserve. Beautiful!

Sites/Things To Do
Centro Storico of Ostuni – La Citta Bianca (The White City). Beautiful winding streets with local shops, restaurants and bars. Churches on list of proposed UNESCO World Heritage sites.
Alberobello – (20 minute drive) Trullis! A UNESCO World Heritage site. Touristy, but a must see.
Castel Del Monte – (120 minute drive) A UNESCO World Heritage site. 13th Century octagonal castle.
The Grotte di Castellana (60 minute drive) – Italy’s largest underground cave network
Zoo Safari – (30 minute drive) Combination zoo, drive thru safari, aquarium/dolphin shows and rides/roller coasters. A fund day with our without children.
Aqua Waterpark (10 minute drive) Located at Lamaforca Beach. Waterslides, activities, bar/café. Fun for children.
Golf – (25 minute drive) Cocarro Gold Club, near Fasano

Lecce – (60 minute drive) Known as the” Florence of the South". Famous for its baroque architecture, shopping, restaurants and bars. A must see day trip!
Bari – (50 minute drive) A bustling city with shopping ranging from famous Italian designers to IKEA.
Martina Franca – Another baroque masterpiece with excellent shops. The drive takes you through the countryside dotted with masseria and trulli.
Polignano a Mare – Seaside cliff town. Great dining on the cliffs overlooking the sea.
Monopoli – (30 minute drive) Nice old port town with plenty of history. Also nice beaches.
Locorotondo – Nice small town with wine making co-op and tours, including in English. Co-op has very reasonable wine prices

“The best location in Ostuni and absolutely charming!”

Reviewed 23 May 2015

You can't do better than this gem: Two roof top terraces with drop dead gorgeous views of the old town, every amenity you could possibly want (washing machine, hair dryer, flat screen cable TV, wifi), a well-stocked kitchen, and a perfect location for easy walking to both the old town and the grocery stores and the fabulous Saturday market (allow yourself two hours to go through the whole market). You are still in the "Centro Storico" and will have the true Italian experience, but you are only a block away from the ATM machine, the fish market, the coop fruit and vegetable market, a bakery, several good restaurants and the lovely Villa Communale park with a nice bar. The regular grocery store is only another 2 blocks away. If you want to go to Piazza Libertá and the historical center, that's only about 2 blocks the other direction. We stayed at Casa Josephina in Ostuni for 11 weeks, and did extensive research before we made this choice. This was the perfect home away from home for us, and we would make this same choice again. And the owners were extremely easy to work with; the booking was smooth and easy, the security deposit refund came back within days of our departure. If they have a vacancy, grab it!!

“A gem in Ostuni”

Reviewed 30 Oct 2014

For those that want to live with the locals in a delightful house Casa Josephina could not be bettered. Situated so close to the historic centre yet in a 'lived in' neighbourhood adds to the charm of the holiday. The accommodation catered well for both inside and outside living, thus catering for all types of weather! Being centrally situated it was so easy to travel to Lecce, Alberobello, the coast and other places of interest. One could not write a review of Casa Josephina without mentioning the personal contacts made during the booking process and your stay in Ostuni. Paul and Dabbie provided us with so much valuable information, always promptly responding to any questions. They really care about their house guests. Once you've arrived Pauline will welcome you with such warmth. We met her twice in the Pink Lady, the local coffee house, always asking us if we needed any help. If you are planning a trip yo Puglia look no further than Ostuni and stay at Casa Josephina!

“Authentic Italy”

Reviewed 16 Nov 2013

This is a lovely authentic characterful house in an ideal location in a most interesting town. Finished and equipped to a high standard, it has everything you need including the owners' excellent guides. The balconies offer beautiful views. Ostuni is endlessly interesting with small independent shops alongside designer boutiques. The old town is 3 minutes away and within 200 metres you have a wide choice of good value restaurants where you can dine like kings. While we had one monsoon day, the November weather was summer like with temperatures above 21C Go to Ostuni, stay in Casa Josephina, visit the charming surrounding towns, walk the beaches, enjoy the cheery Italians ,and love their history wine and food. We had a great great holiday.

“Perfect accommodation in the heart of Ostuni”

Reviewed 24 Oct 2013

I defy anyone not to enjoy a stay at Casa Josephina! With excellent furnishings and decor, together with an extremely well-equipped kitchen and stylish outdoor facilities on two terraces, there is nothing lacking in this property. Ostuni is stunning with fantastic architecture and delightful cafes, restaurants and bars. The property is a stones throw from the local park, where we found a great little cafe for our breakfast, Bar Del Villa. Great coffee and scrummy apple cake! They even made sure there was enough for our last day! We dined one evening at Caffe Cavour and were very impressed. The setting is beautiful, staff personable and food fantastic. We enjoyed trips to Martina Franca, the Trullis at Alberobello, Monopoli and Polignano a Mare were amazing with their tiny streets and beautiful beaches. Even in October, it was warm enough for some to catch the sun in their bikinis! Over the years we have booked many differing properties throughout Europe and I have to say that Casa Josephina and the prompt service offered by Paul and Debbie, together with the wonderful Pauline in Ostuni, is top of the list. I have no hesitation in recommending this property and destination and I know we will return at some stage.

“Comfortable, Superb Terraces and Great location”

Reviewed 20 Jun 2013

A very well equipped town house with comfortable furnishings and just about all you will need for your holiday. The master bedroom has a proper king size bed (at least 5ft wide) so a good night's sleep was easy, especially with virtually no noise from outside. Ideally situated for the old town with all the restaurants, bars and cafes at hand, just a 5 minute stroll down the hill. Then in the opposite direction, even closer is the park, great for an afternoon stroll and an ice cream, sitting under the shade of big old trees. A few stone steps to contend with going from floor to floor but even for me, having recently had major surgery, it was ok and I used to go and make the morning tea and bring it back down again. The star in the evenings was the top terrace, with a great view over the old town, very pleasant for a sit with a glass of wine before and after diner. All in all a memorable holiday. Thanks from Roy & Sue.

“Wine on the roof deck with a view”

Reviewed 17 Feb 2013

We were here for our honeymoon.. so we were definitely picky! A few words to describe this little gem of an apartment in Ostuni: 1) Perfectly placed (just outside the center but.. with a VIEW of the center!), 2) perfectly sized (pint-size.. great for the 2 of us), 3) informative (the owner is crazy organized and provides tons of information about the town and surroundings) and 4) unbelievably relaxing. The apartment is a great mix of historic and modern. We can't think of a thing we'd change. But, FYI.. a lot of steep stairs. Some of the things we did in Ostuni: strolled the historic center, ate well, sat on the roof deck with wine (a lot), went to the Saturday market and cooked in the cute kitchen AND on the roof deck grill. Pauline is the owner's local overseer of the property. She met us to show us the place and give us the keys, answered all of our questions and was exceptionally helpful. Go to Al Solito Posto (the pizza place) and Mona Lisa Caffe. And say hi to Emiglia (the nonna next door). Book this place - you won't be disappointed! But hopefully, we'll have first dibs for our 10 year anniversary! :o)

“Charming house, perfect location”

Reviewed 7 Jan 2013

My partner and I have spent one week in Casa Josephina. The house is clean and well equipped - we found everything we need. The terrace is absolutely fabolous and offer a stunning view of Ostuni. A short walk and you are in the historical center of Ostuni. Nearby you will find supermarket, bakery, fruit and veg shop fishmonger and several bars. The info pack sent by Paul and Ebbie was extremely useful. I would definitely go back and recommend this property to a friend.

“Simply Fabulous”

Reviewed 18 Oct 2012

We had a fabulous time in Casa Josephina. The house has bags of charm and is spotless. Although I have schoolboy Italian, it's a huge bonus to have an English lady of Italian ancestry managing the house. She has all the local knowledge. The house is on several levels and the views over Ostuni from the terraces are simply wonderful. I shall long remember sitting on the top terrace watching the lights come on in the old city and the marinara merging into the sea in the distance. It's a very short step down the alley into the main square and the old city. Having spent some time in Italian cities, my only concerns when booking Casa Josephina were about driving and parking. I needn't have worried. Thanks to the best infomation pack I have ever seen, we always managed to find somewhere to park for free within a short stroll of the house. And it only takes a few minutes to drive in and out of the city. So the main coast road and excellent beaches are within easy reach. All in all, I can't think of a better place to stay if you want to explore Ostuni and the surrounding region.

“Great place to stay for a holiday in Puglia”

Reviewed 22 Jul 2012

Very good. The house is a townhouse in the centre of Ostuni, three minutes walk from the main area of bars, restaurants etc. and a small supermarket. It is on a tiny road with no passing traffic so it is generally quiet. We stayed as a couple so we had loads of space, the living room is a good size and the roof terraces are very spacious and ideal for sitting out, it feels very private although surrounded by other terraces, because the locals don't seem to use them. The main bed is in an alcove in the living room, with a separate bedroom off the living room. There is a shower room off the living room and another on the ground floor. The stairs are quite narrow and steep but not a problem for the fit and healthy. The kitchen/dining room is on the top floor and leads out to the roof terraces. The house was very clean and well equipped. There are buses to the local beaches, though we had a car, there are a large number of lovely beaches about 10 -15 minutes drive away. If you can cope with the local driving habits, it's easy to get to Bari, Brindisi and elsewhere. Although we always managed to park within easy reach of the house, finding a parking spot can be difficult at some times of the day. There are loads of shops offering fresh fruit and veg and also seafood. Generally food and restaurant prices seemed reasonable, an evening meal was around 40 euros all in for two.
