Location description from owner

The Occitanie region

The Languedoc-Roussillon is one of the most popular yet unspoilt regions of France. With a wonderful climate and colourful history, it has a beautiful coast as well as lakes and mountains, ancient Cathar castles and churches and monasteries. It is an important wine-growing area.

The area has attracted artists and musicians including the painters Picasso, Dali and Chagall and the cellist Pau Casals commemorated each year in the Prades music festival.

Romanesque churches abound and further down the valley the monasteries of St Martin de Canigou and St Michel de Cuixa and the ancient Priory of Serrabonne make worthwhile destinations.

The Cerdagne region which is in the south western part of the Pyrenees-Orientales is a high plateau with a unique dry and sunny climate and a wonderful atmosphere.

With around 300 days of sunshine a year, very low pollution levels and an extraordinary luminous quality to the air, this area can be enjoyed at any time of the year for outdoor and sporting activities, for young and old alike relaxation or historic and cultural visits on both sides of the border.

In Summer there are many activities and excursions for families and for children and older the attractions include:
- swimming in the open air heated swimming pool at Err or the natural sulphurous thermal baths and jacuzzis at Llo where the water is 37 degrees centigrade!
- the childrens' adventure park at Err (www.err-aventure.com) or the adventure park offices at Font-Romeu and Les Angles (www.aventure-pyreneenne.com).
- other sports and activities most of them suitable for youngsters including skating, squash, tennis, horse-riding, paragliding, ballooning, fishing, sailing, anyoning. rafting, climbing, archery, caving, cycling, mountain-biking. mini-golf, moto quad and air trampoline
- the chance to visit local farms to see the animals being fed and to learn about and taste the local produce direct from the farm esepcially the local mountain cheeses (e.g. Cal Mateu at http://fermecalmateu.free.fr and la ferme du rialet at La Llagone)
- the chance to see bees, taste the different types of honey and visit the local museum and honey shop at Vallcebollere
- the chance to stay at comfortable local guarded mountain refuges in beautiful lakeside settings where excellent food is also provided (the owner can give further guidance)
- superb inexpensive local restaurants sampled by the owner who will pass you on his top recommendations on both sides of the border!
- numerous festivals all year round but especially in the Summer
- protected large mountain parks and reserves with small villages and scenic trails where you will encounter total calm even in high Summer and where local wildlife abounds

In WInter there is excellent skiing at varying levels of difficulty in the area, including eight ski resorts on the French side of the Catalan Pyrenees alone, comprising 174 miles of piste accessible on one lift pass within easy driving distance of Osseja. Further resorts are also readily accessible on the Spanish side of the border, including extensive downhill ski-ing at Masella and La Molina and cross-country ski-ing at Lles.

Font Romeu and Pyrenees 2000 are linked and, with an exceptionally sunny outlook and high altitude, provide 34 miles of skiing at all levels of ability.

Osseja

At 1250 metres above sea level, Osseja is a lively all year round village near the Spanish border and an excellent base for many outdoor activites especially walking, skiing, cycling, golf, swimming, via ferrata and horse-riding.

There are a dozen ski resorts in the area on both the French and Spanish sides of the border with excellent skiing at all varying levels of difficulty, including 8 ski resorts on the French side of the Cerdagne alone, comprising 174 miles of piste accessible on one lift pass all within easy driving distance. In addition, there are cross-country ski runs.

In Summer, walks, festivals and many activities for youngsters are available and there is a large heated open air pool and natural thermal baths within easy reach. Andorra is only a 30 minute drive, the benedictine monastery of Montserrat is 60 minutes' drive away and Barcelona is only 90 minutes away by car or can be visited on a day trip by train.

Osseja itself is a working village full of character and with a nearby forest - it is renowned for its healthy climate particularly for anyone with respiratory problems. Several extensive natural mountain reserves are within driving distance. In Summer there is a large open-air swimming pool in the nearby village of Err (10 minutes' drive) and there are also all-year round thermal baths at Llo (15 minutes' drive) and at Dorres (also 15 minutes' drive) with the opportunity for massages.

Osseja has a train station from which the "little yellow train" winds its way across the Cerdagne plateau and down through the Tet valley as far as the medieval fortress town of Villefranche de Conflent.

There are many excellent restaurants serving healthy and tasty Catalan dishes on both sides of the border including the renowned "Restaurant du Lac" in Osseja itself.

It is just 3km south east of Puigcerda in Spain, the largest town in the area set on a hill which has many good small shops, bars, cafes, restaurants and its own lake.

The Puigmal, which at 2913 metres is the highest summit in the Eastern Pyrenees, is nearby and is the origin of the excellent tap water at the property. Excellent walking and cycling routes abound. Numerous other summits, lakes and mountain ranges are also accessible including the Carlit massif and its lakes, the majestic Sierra de Cadi ridge, the wild and isolated Madres and the mountain train from Ribes to Nuria in Spain from which many excursions are possible.

There are also several adventure parks and sporting activities for youngsters and teenagers, for example the Via Ferrata centre at Llo (www.via-ferrata-de-llo.com), the "Aromix" adventure park at Angoustrine or the adventure park by the Matemale lake (www.angles-aventures.com). There is also a mountain sports centre accessible at www.aventure-pyreneenne.com

Further afield for walking are the natural reserves of Mantet and Nyer, the mythical Canigou massif and the peaks of Andorra. The nearby Eyne valley has spectacular flowers and wildlife due to its unique micro-climate and is visited by botanists from all over the world.

Ancient towns, villages and churches can also be visited, including the fortress town of Mont Louis, the ancient Belloc chapel on top of a hill near Dorres and, further afield, ancient monasteries such as the working Benedictine monastery of St Martin de Canigou near Vernet-les-Bains.

The fortresses of Mont Louis and Villefranche-sur-Conflent both built by Vauban are also well worth visiting.

Around half an hour's drive, near Les Angles, there is a large wildlife park where it is possible to walk and observe many animals in a near natural habitat.

Locally there is a Solar Oven at Odeillo, situated there due to the exceptional clarity of the atmosphere, with a fascinating exhibition about the history of solar power.

There are numerous Summer festivals in the region including three local Summer classical music festivals and normally a different Spanish village would have its own feast day and celebration each week which can include dramatic processions of fire led by demons and spectacular firework displays.

There is a large, heated open air swimming pool in the nearby village of Err, open from mid June to mid September, and a natural thermal spa in the village of Llo (10 and 15 minutes' drive respectively).

The area has a strong Spanish influence and became French in the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659. Catalan is widely spoken as well as French. In the mountains or their foothills, wildlife and flora abound, including mountain deer, wolves, pine martens, marmots, wild boar, bearded vultures and golden eagles.

The area is of such natural beauty and calm that you will come back feeling totally refreshed and relaxed!

“Full of character in the centre of Osseja, perfect for exploring French and Spanish Pyrenees”

Reviewed 18 Aug 2013

Osseja is a small town with lots of character, and the apartment is situated perfectly in the centre of town, within a 5 minute walk of the town square. The location is great for exploring the Pyrenees, with the nearest sizeable town, Puicjerda (in Spain) easily accessible by car, bus, bike or on foot. Our group (two adults, plus two teenagers) were split on whether or not you needed a car. There is good public transport (bus rides cost just 1E!), but a handful of buses each day so you need to be quite organised, and the yellow train, both of which offer fantastic views as you go. Loads of people cycling too, and you can walk out of Osseja into the mountains or to Puicjerda. The accommodation was comfortable and had everything we needed to find our way around. Great to spend time in France and Spain within a short walk along a quiet road from each other!

“Lovely, comfortable and spacious 3 bed apartment in a beautiful quaint quiet town”

Reviewed 29 May 2013

My husband and I had a relaxing and enjoyable week at this apartment in Osseja. Beautiful countryside, and the apartment was big with two bathrooms and a separate wc. Long balcony overlooking courtyard. Cosy living room, and kitchen with all utensils for cooking and washing facilities. It was a home from home. Lots of walking to be had in and outside of the town. The town is served by a good bus service and also the little yellow train - of which we made good use of as we do not drive. What we also liked was the bakery around the corner from where we bought fresh bread for breakfast every day. There's also a nice pub three minutes walk away from the apartment. All in all, it's a wonderful place to go and stay, and one cannot fault the apartment. It's very clean, well-maintained and top notch!! We were lucky with the weather too - for early May it was quite warm.
