Cumberland Cottage is a beautifully presented, pet friendly, property located in the heart of the tranquil Cumbrian village of Orton. Built in 1632 the cottage is one of the oldest properties in the village. Formerly part of the Duke of Cumberland Inn and more recently the village store and post office, Cumberland Cottage was lovingly renovated in 2012 to provide well equipped, contemporary holiday accommodation of a very high standard.

Orton is a hidden gem, once described by Wainwright as one of Westmorland's loveliest villages, it lies on the Coast to Coat walk and is surrounded by breath-taking scenery. Just 2 miles from the M6, it has an enviable location close to the Lake District and within the Yorkshire Dales. It is approximately 12 miles from the Cumbrian towns of Kendal, Sedbergh, Appleby and Penrith.

You will find maps, walking guides and numerous leaflets in the cottage to help you plan your stay. We also have a detailed Cottage Information File and a Comment's Book brimming with positive reviews from previous guests, many of whom have taken the time to recommend their favourite places to visit or eat out.

On your arrival you will find a tea tray with biscuits or a homemade cake and a fresh pint of milk in the fridge. We always ensure that the cottage has a starter supply of essential times such as washing up liquid, toilet rolls, kitchen paper, tin foil, cling film, hand soap and salt & pepper.

One well behaved dog is welcome by agreement for a small fee of £15. All we ask is that it is not allowed on the furniture or left unattended in the the property without our prior consent.

Ground Floor:

Open plan living/kitchen/dining space

Well equipped kitchen with electric cooker and hob, microwave, fridge with ice-box, washing machine, iron and iron board. Dining table & 2 chairs, oak floor, original beams, leather settee and chair, picture window.

Freeview TV/DVD/Radio, Free Wi-fi, selection of books, games & DVDs, electric wood-burning stove, oil central heating (controlled at your comfort, from the owners property).

1st Floor:

Extremely comfortable king size bed, bedside tables with lamps, en-suite wet room with underfloor heating and a powerful shower, small walk-in wardrobe, all bed linen and towels are provided.

Outside:

Enclosed sitting area with bistro table & 2 chairs. Ideal for catching the afternoon sun whilst observing village life. On road parking (Orton is a very quite village and parking outside the property can almost always be guaranteed).

Nestled between close to the Lake District yet within the Yorkshire Dales National Parks, Orton is just off the M6 motorway (junction 38). The cottage is ideally placed for exploring one of the most beautiful and least populated counties in the UK. Blessed with scenic mountains, lakes and rivers this is a fabulous region to visit. A wealth of outdoor activities are on offer in Cumbria such as sailing, windsurfing, rock-climbing, mountain biking, fell walking and horse-riding. Those looking to enjoy less strenuous pursuits can explore pretty Cumbrian market towns such as Kendal, Keswick and Appleby, visit national trust properties, castles & gardens or admire the stunning scenery from aboard a Lakeland steamer.

Orton

The traditional Cumbrian village of Orton is largely undiscovered by many tourists who tend to head for the bustling tourist centres of the Lakes. Surrounded by beautiful countryside, Orton a provides peaceful and relaxing base for you to enjoy your break.

Orton is at the centre of a network of peaceful footpaths and bridleways which enable numerous wonderful walks of any length. The limestone scenery of Orton Scar and Great Asby Scar are close to the village while the majestic Howgills are just a few miles away. The mountain walks of the Lake District are an easy and picturesque drive away as are the Yorkshire Dales.

Local amenities in Orton include a pub serving home cooked food and real ale, a well stocked shop and post office, the award winning Kennedys chocolate factory with tea room and Silver Yard cafe and gallery. On the second Saturday of every month, there is a fabulous farmers' market on you doorstep which offers a vast array of crafts and local produce.

The cottage adjoins our own house and we are only too happy for guests to pop over to see us if they have any queries or require any further information. Equally. we realise that guests value their own privacy and we always ensure that we do not intrude unnecessarily.
