A rustic table at the front of the house is a great place to watch the changing light on the mountains and observe the wildlife. To the side is a tree filled field, perfect for picnicking. The property also has the benefit of free wifi. The house is in a very quiet location with just the sound of birdsong and the occasional distant bells of the goats. There is a summer bar within walking distance, normally open from July to September, which is a great place for a cold beer or a glass of wine and a chance to mingle with the friendly locals. Ten kilometres away, in Orce, there are shops, restaurants and bars, where free tapas is served with every drink. Orce has a weekly market, a castle and a museum of prehistory. Just outside the town of Orce is a large spring fed freshwater swimming pool where you can swim with fish. Entry is free and there are poolside bars. There are great walks from the house into the surrounding hills and the possibilities for mountain biking are virtually endless. Cortijo Romero is available all year found and is a fantastic place to celebrate Christmas and New Year with views to the snow capped mountains.

Location description from owner

The Andalucia region

The historic city of Granada is around one & a half hours drive away. Well worth a visit for its elegant squares & winding streets, Granada also boasts the world famous Alhambra, with its wonderfully preserved palace and the beautiful gardens. Above the city is the ski resort of the Sierra Nevada. Less than half an hour away from the house is the dramatically sited castle at Velez Blanco has splendid views, and all the towns in the region offer street cafes and bars to sit and watch the world go by.

Orce

The farm house is on the edge of the village of Venta Micerna, ten kilometres from the historic town of Orce in north-eastern Granada. The town of Orce has a Moorish castle and a fascinating museum, plus a beautiful old church, and there are shops, banks, bars and restaurants, as well as a weekly market. There are good quality reasonably priced restaurants where a menu del dia is 10€ per head including all courses, drinks and coffee. It is also well worth sitting in the bar in the square sampling the free tapas with a few drinks and watching the world go by. Orce has a natural free swimming pool, spring fed, which is a lovely relaxing place to spend some time, it also has a bar and restaurant. There are many villages to explore and the mountain town of Castril has a dramatic gorge which you can walk through on an elevated wooden platform. Granada is a must for the Alhambra etc and this can be done as a day trip from the house. This is a dramatic landscape of forests & mountains, which rise to a height of over 2000 metres. There are numerous tracks and pathways where you can walk for miles with little likelihood of meeting other people.Twenty minutes drive away is the regional centre of Huescar, another historic town with a greater range of shops , busy restaurants & bars. This is an ideal place to sit outside a street cafe and watch the world go by, or relax in one of the many bars where free tapas are served with every drink.A bustling market every Thursday fills the streets and squares and is a great place to soak up the atmosphere of 'real' Spain. To the north is the vast natural park of the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas, another region of forests & mountains, famed for its wildlife. Between Huescar & the park is the highest mountain of the area, La Sagra and there are signed footpaths to the top, should you have the energy.A drive in any direction will take you through stunning scenery and you will encounter little other traffic. The nearest coast is around one and a quarter hours drive away at Aguilas, a typical Spanish resort and not over commercialised. Close by are numerous unspoilt beaches which are rarely crowded. Walkers & nature lovers should be in their element, with endless opportunities for exploring the wilderness.

“A delightful house in a beautiful rural setting”

Reviewed 26 Oct 2015

The photographs on the website convinced us to choose Cortijo Romero for our two-week holiday but when we arrived it was clear that even the photos don’t do the property justice - everything seems much more spacious when we were there. The house has been beautifully restored and comfortably furnished and was immaculately clean throughout. We were amazed at the extent of the private courtyard which offers a beautiful garden, covered dining area, patio, swimming pool and sunbathing area; we spent many happy hours there enjoying the tranquillity of the property’s location. There are no restaurants in Venta Micena (there is a bar but this was closed during our stay) but this was not a problem for us as we prefer to cook our own meals. The kitchen is well equipped with pans and utensils, and the four-ring hob/oven meant that our culinary creativity was unconstrained! There is also a good-sized barbeque in the garden if that’s your catering preference. The market visits different towns in the area each day of the week which was ideal for buying all of our fruit and veg, supplemented by fruit and almonds from David and Simon’s garden and fresh herbs from the cortijo’s own private courtyard garden. There are two small supermarkets in Orce (10km) but we preferred to go to a larger supermarket in Huescar (25km) which offered a wider selection of goods and was on the way to a number of the great locations we chose for our days out. There are so many places to visit and so much beautiful and varied scenery to enjoy within 40km of Cortijo Romero but we would thoroughly recommend: 1) visiting Castril and doing the loop walk which starts and ends at the gorge; and 2) driving the tiny road north from Huescar to Las Santas and then taking the Los Collados road around La Sagra mountain and back to Huescar. In summary this is a superb cortijo set in a peaceful location, surrounded by fields and mountains; we couldn’t get enough of the view from the front of the house towards the Sierra de Maria Mountains. Thanks to David and Simon for their hospitality which helped to make this such an enjoyable and memorable holiday for us.

“cortijo romero relaxation par exellence”

Reviewed 15 Sep 2014

our stay at cortijo romero was one of the best holidays we have taken. the standard of the accomodation was superb, don,t worry about the lack of air conditioning you won,t need it. all the rooms are cool and furnished to a high standard. the layout of the courtyard and plunge pool area were tastefully appointed and very clean. overall a beautiful place to take a glass of wine and watch the sun set over the mountains ! our hosts david and simon were very helpfull and knowledgeable, giving advice on planned trips. all in all a very pleasing experience.

“A warm welcome in authentic Spain.”

Reviewed 30 Aug 2014

After a long drive through spectacular scenery, the welcome we received from Simon and David, including freshly baked bread and various jams & local wine was much appreciated. The recently renovated traditional farmhouse was cool, comfortable and furnished with a fusion of Spanish and Moroccan styles with lots of shady outdoor space for lounging and eating. We made good use of the small pool which was cleaned early every morning, the owners were discreet but always on hand if needed and nothing seemed too much trouble for them. Although peaceful and remote, during the summer there is a friendly little bar within 2 minutes walk where you can have a beer and chat to locals, and you can pick up anything else you need in Orce which is a 10 minute drive away. We were lucky enough to be in Orce during their August Fiesta, every night was different with parades, bands and dancing. All in all a great holiday in excellent accommodation surrounded by a stunning and unique landscape; a great taste of authentic Spain!

“A beautiful secret location hidden away in rural Spain”

Reviewed 16 Jun 2014

On arrival this Cortijo exceeded our expectations. The accommodation was excellent and all the rooms were beautifully furnished and decorated in a comfortable rustic style. The kitchen and bathroom were both very well equipped and the Welcome pack of wine, homemade bread and marmalade made us feel very special. The views from the front patio were breathtaking of the local mountains, especially in the evening and the enclosed patios & BBQ, were private and wonderfully cool in the heat of mid-day sun. The added bonus of our own private swimming pool was especially marvelous. Although in a secluded location, there was easy access by car to some adorable Spanish bars and supermarkets. The local area is both breathtaking and steeped in history. We wish we had been able to stay longer and will defiantly be back soon.

“Rustic Elegance at its best”

Reviewed 27 May 2014

We stayed at Cortijo Romero for a two night break over the Bank Holiday weekend with the intent of re-charging our batteries after a hectic start to the year although I must admit to checking my email via the free wifi! The property has been recently refurbished to a very high standard whilst retaining, or re-using, many of the property's original features and can accurately be described as a delight. The property consists of a large lounge and dining area, the two sofas, two armchairs and six place dining table all fitted comfortably in the room. There are three double bedrooms so when they say the property can sleep 6 they mean in real beds with not a bed-settee in sight! There is also a good sized bathroom and kitchen with all the appliances you could need - hob, oven, dishwasher and washing machine. Outside there is a private courtyard, exclusive use of the plunge pool and a beautiful garden area with various fruit trees and a secluded picnic area - a little piece of an English garden in the middle of rural Spain. The surrounding area is quiet with numerous walks and fabulous views of the Sierra de Maria mountains. The nearby town of Orce provides several opportunities for quality meals at excellent prices - not forgetting that tapas is still served for free with drinks in this part of Spain. At the end of our stay we left fully re-invigorated and ready to face the world again. We highly recommend it and we will be returning in the future.
