Location description from owner

The Occitanie region

Situated between the Montagne Noir to the north and the Pyrenees to the south, the Min ervois region is dominated by vineyards, the Canal du Midi and the river Aude, It is an area rich in beauty and history and one cannot but be aware of the history of the Cathar people in this region. Visits to the ancient Cathar outposts of Queribus, Peyrepertuse and the ancient city of Minerve bring one closer to their story.
This region is not short of cities to explore....the old walled city of Carcassone, and the Roman connections to Narbonne and Beziers.
One cannot travel far in this region without meeting up with the Canal du Midi. Approx 1 hour from Olonzac, one can visit Lac St.Ferreol the feed water for the canal du Midi. There are many locks and bridges to see and one can take short cruises at various points.
Lastly, one cannot talk about the region without reference to the vineyards and many Chateaux and Domaines where one is always welcome to taste the local vintage;

Olonzac

Olonzac is a working french village of approx 1000 inhabitants; It's history dates back over 1000 years and one an still see part of the ancient 9th century walls. It is particularly known for its' busy weekly market.

Nearby is the village of Homps, the main port in the area on the Canal du Midi. There one can sit at the canal-side cafes and watch the many barges and cruisers. The canal banks are the perfect place for long walks and cycling.

Just outside of Homps, is Lac Jouarres, a swimming canoeing and fishing lake. There is a lifeguard on duty there in the summer months. It is an idyllic spot in summer for picnics, particularly in the evening watching the sun go down.

Other villages well worth a visit in the area are Caunes Minervois, with its' ancient abbey and houses; Salleles D'aude which has an ancient Roman pottery works and Minerve, an ancient Cathar stronghold whose location is stunning:

Within an hours drive of Olonzac one can visit the beaches of Narbonne Plage, Gruissan and La Franqui. For the children also there is Safari park at Sigean and a Water park at Leucate/
