Location description from owner

The Occitanie region

Languedoc Roussillon is the "South" of the south of France. The region gets an average of over 300 days of sunshine each year and has more coastline than Provence and the French Riviera to the North East.

Olonzac is perfectly situated to visit the region's many wonderful sights. An afternoon boat ride on the Canal du Midi is a must. The departure takes place in Homps, 3km from Olonzac. Also nearby are the many Cathar sites including Minerve and the Cite de Carcassonne; the lovely villages of Mirepoix and Lagrasse; and the region's many vineyards.

Being a fantastic area for hiking and cycling, why not hire bikes that can be delivered to your door and ply the canal towpaths and local roads through the vineyards?

Olonzac

Olonzac, with a population of 1600, is the meeting place of the Minervois valley. This is where the people from the surrounding villages come to socialise and shop. With many restaurants, cafes/bars and boulangeries, two supermarkets and many other shops selling everything from flowers to newspapers, there is all you need here to enjoy your vacation to the max. Professional services also include a range of doctors, dentists and banks.

Olonzac has a large municipal park which includes many varieties of mature trees, rose arbors, ponds with ducks and swans, tennis courts, boules courts and extensive lawns and gardens. It is a wonderful place to enjoy the shade on a warm summer's day. The main boulevard is lined with huge plane trees, cafes and buildings of architectural interest. There is also an archeological museum, tourism office and wine co-operative.

“Comfortable, stylish house in a great location”

Reviewed 21 Aug 2012

I stayed at Castel Grand Rue for a week with my brother and partner (we were in the area for a family wedding) and we were all absolutely delighted with the house. The owner, Carolyn, was very helpful (via email) from start to finish and the house was comfortable (all the mod cons) and had lots of character. There are narrow stairs curling up through the house and the rooms are all different shapes and sizes. The stairs may be a little challenging for elderly or disabled guests but my brother has difficulty walking and he managed fine as there are handrails. We especially loved the power shower, the terrace and the bed in the main bedroom upstairs - it was so comfy we founf it hard to get up in the morning! There is also a washing machine and line outside (very useful), a coffee machine and free WIFI. The house is situated right in the centre of Olonzac so it's just round the corner from the main square where we enjoyed many beers and coffees on the street as well as some lovely food. I highly recommend this house for a family or group of friends. It is also great value for money. I would stay there again.
