Location description from owner

The Languedoc-Roussillon region

This part of the Languedoc has a sunny Mediterranean climate. It can be hot in summer, but the temperature is often tempered by a breeze. Now the 3rd most visited region in France by British people, the Languedoc offers something for everyone. Miles of long, sandy beaches, coastal lagoons, vibrant cities such as Narbonne and Montpellier, historical sites such as Carcassonne and the Cathar castles, fabulous scenery, great cuisine and vineyards, vineyards, vineyards.

Olonzac

The large village of Olonzac is the 'capital' of the Minervois wine-producing region and is well-serviced with shops, a large supermarket, mini-markets, bars, restaurants etc and it has its own weekly outdoor market on a Tuesday morning. Olonzac is a thriving place - it is lively in the summer months and still largely open and active during the winter, a reason many people chose to buy here. The town has a music festival over a weekend in August (please enquire for the dates!).Sports facilities: As well as your own pool at Gite Gai Soleil, you can also play tennis in the park or hire bikes to cycle to the local lake, Lac du Jouarres, alongside the Canal du Midi or through the vineyards. The English speaking bike hire company will deliver bikes to your door. There are plently of opportunities for wind-surfing or kite-boarding both at Lac du Jouarres or at the coast. Golfers can enjoy a round of golf in Carcassonne and in Beziers.Sightseeing: Olonzac is a great base from which to explore the Languedoc region with Carcassonne, Narbonne, Beziers, the Canal du Midi, various exciting caves, abbeys, and beach resorts all within an easy drive. Wine-lovers will find this is an excellent place to stay as many of the local chateaux and domaines offer wine-tastings and direct sales of wine.Markets: The markets of this region are colourful and interesting with lots of fresh local produce, basketware, herbs and spices, jewellery, shoes, handbags and even beds! The Tuesday morning market in Olonzac is just a few steps away and is a very social occasion - best to go early to avoid the busy period. If you can't make Tuesday, there's another good market in Lezignan Corbieres on a Wednesday morning.Restaurants: Olonzac has a number of reasonably priced restaurants all within walking distance and just 2 kms down the road in Homps, there is a further wide selection. Please ask us for more details when booking.Supermarkets: Olonzac has a couple of mini supermarkets and a much larger Casino supermarket on the edge of the village.
