Description

An old Winery renovated and transformed into a very stylish villa with amazing oriental garden and a tiny swimming pool

Situated in the peaceful and traditional village of "Finikia" in Oia

The Winery House (main domain), part of the "Winery Villa" complex:

This was the last winery which operated in Fiinikia until the 70's.

This impressive construction was built by Santorinian craftsmen using local materials like Aspa (volcanic ash), Poria (red volcanic stones) chipped around the doors and windows, grey and red volcanic stone stairs, traditional doors and traditional concrete floors. Iron railings in all windows were used as protection from the pirates.

The building is composed by two interconnected large cave rooms (canavas) of a total 160 sq.m, surface. There was the winery production and the barrels. Both enter from the courtyard where the main entrance to the house is.

These canavas with impressive proportions and domed roof, half caved and half external, follow the typology of a large church due to constructional and operational reasons.

Build benches along the stone walls used to support the wine barrels. A crypt in the wall that separates the canavas is the "ratsidio" where took place the distillation of raki, is now used as a guard robe.

The big open space (of over 80 sq. m.) of the eastern canava includes, the living room with build benches, the dining room, the kitchen and an (open) cave bedroom with a double bed. It looks strange that this house having only two bedrooms is stated for 6 guests. The major bedroom is one entire hall (the western canava) of 70 sq.m. this includes the master bedroom with one build-in Kings Size bed, and above this, a wooden (open) loft with two single sleeping mattresses.

Both rooms are decorated in high style.

Both chambers (canavas) are open to a private large "oriental garden' of 250 sq.m. full of flowers, cactus and wine plants. A tiny swimming pool lies in front of them.

The fully equipped kitchen in combination with the oriental garden make this place ideal for preparing and enjoying great gourmet dinners indoors (daytime) or out doors in the evening.

Ideal for 4 - 6 persons.

Location description from owner

The South Aegean region

Santorini island is well serviced by both air and sea. There are many flights daily from Athens to Santorini with Aegean, Ryan air, Volotea and Olympic Airlines. There is also a multitude of international lines and charter flights from Europe, especially during the summer season.

The fastest boat to Santorini from Piraeus (the main port of Athens) is the High-Speed ferry which takes 4,5 hours. There are a number of other ferries that connect Santorini with Athens and the other islands.

Moving around Santorini with a rental car or motorbike is perfectly easy but it is of course busier in high season.

Oia

The house is situated in the "FINIKIA traditional settlement", which is a protected neighborhood of Oia. No cars are allowed inside Finikias narrow streets, and the village is peaceful and relaxing. Distance of the house from the bust station on the main road is 150 meters (walking), from the taverns of Finikia 200 meters, and from the centre of Oia 800 meters . Nearest sandy beach (Baxedes) is 1300 m downhill, therefore it is advised to go there by bus or rented vehicle. Finikia is a small village, attached to Oia as its neighborhood. There were the wineries where the grapes from the wine field of Santorini, were processed to wine. Village is there since middle Ages. Most buildings were wineries with some accommodation for the workers. The economy of this small village was directly dependent from the wine. As there were not any wells in the area, fresh water was scarce and exclusively supplied by the rain, collected into the sizable underground cisterns of the houses. In our days, very few houses maintain their cisterns in operation and fresh water is provided by the sea, via a local desalination plant.

In our days, Finikia is characterized as a Traditional Settlement and therefore the local architecture is somewhat protected. No cars or motor vehicles of any kind are allowed into the narrow alleys of the village. Finikia is a very silent and romantic place away from the afternoon tourist crowds raiding Oia due to its famous sunset. There you can enjoy your wine in peace while sun falls….

“Out of this world. Stunning location, stylish peaceful property”

Reviewed 9 Jul 2013

"A very peaceful and relaxing place in a traditional Greek village, attached to busy Oia. The house is absolutely amazing in architecture and style. You can enjoy the local wines in the corners of the sizable garden or watch the sunset from the terrace. We really enjoyed our stay in this wonderful place. Oia is in walking distance from the house. The owners were very helpful. They revealed all the "hidden" places on the island and helped us organize our tours around the island in the best possible way. We look forward to returning there some day and make our dreams come true once again.
