“Spectacular views”

Reviewed 12 Sep 2012

Right from the booking of this condo with Janet everything went swimmingly. This was my 9th trip to Jamaica and my 4th staying self catering, this place far outshines any other I have stayed at. The views are spectacular day or night, we loved to sit out on the balcony and look over Ochi bay. The condo itself is also very comfortable and has everything you need and if it doesnt, for example no hair dryer, one quick call to Bruce and I had one delivered to the door. We will be returning in Jan 2013 and will definitely look to book here. My only niggle which would need addressing is towel and linen change just once a week is not acceptable, yes Bruce brought new towels when asked and we paid to get the linen washed but I do not expect to pay someone extra for clean linen and towels

Owner's reply: Thank you for your review. I am glad you enjoyed your stay at Columbus Heights. I agree the views are spectacular. The housekeeper should clean and change linen twice a week and I apologise if this didn't happen. I am investigating why you paid for linen to be washed as we have a big supply of towels and linen in the apartment and this should not have happened. As explained in my email, I am prepared to re-imburse you the cost of the laundry and as suggested by you, will deduct the cost from your next holiday at Columbus Heights. Any personal laundry is of course paid by the guest. I look forward to your return to Columbus Heights in the New Year.

“A Lovely Seaview from the Balcony”

Reviewed 3 Sep 2012

I have stayed in this apartment twice now, October 2011 and April 2012. The first time it was just myself and my partner and the second time I brought my 9 year old daughter with us. Janet is friendly and answered all queries with no problems so the booking process was smooth and efficient. The apartment is just as it looks in the photos. It was clean and tidy and the housekeeper Bridgette is genuinely warm, welcoming, courteous, approachable and trustworthy. She was also very very accomodating and kept the apartment absolutely spotless going over and above expectations. I would hire her myself if I lived in or had an apartment in Jamaica!! :-) I would describe the atmosphere as tranquil and peaceful, and the view from the balcony is the highlight of my stay. I could sit and look out at the view of the coastline of Ocho Rios all day and my daughter enjoyed watching as the cruise ships came in to dock early in the mornings and also as they left i the evenings. I hired a car so getting about was no problem but could prove difficult for the elderly or families with very young children if you are not walkers, as the apartment is located at the top of a hill. That said you can get a taxi to transport you to and from town or the beach. The only constructive criticism I have is as follows: 1. The CD player in the bedroom doesn't work properly, it is old now and needs updating. It skips like a scratched record when playing and my favourite Usher CD got stuck in there and I thought I would have to leave it but thankfully I tried the following day and it ejected. I didn't use it again after that. 2. The cable only has two channels both children's channels: Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network! This is great for children I suppose depending on age, but even my daughter got bored!! During my first trip it wasn't such a problem as I was only there for a week and I was busy so barely indoors to watch tv, but on my second trip I was there for 2 weeks and it rained quite a bit so we were stuck indoors unable to go to the beach or even sit by the pool. Also, as I had my daughter with me I was indoors in the evenings and it would have been nice to watch decent television programmes and the movie channels. There is no DVD player in the apartment either so we couldn't even watch any DVD's which we could have purchased in the market or borrowed from friends who live there. 3. I understand from another review on here that since I stayed the kitchen has been refurbished. However during my stay there was not enough cookware and utensils to cook with. Staying in a self catering apartment I would have expected better facilities. I did purchase takeaways which is reasonably priced but I also wanted to cook, for example the sunday dinner but there were not enough pots or a roasting tin and unfortuntely the supermarket did not have what I required so I had to compromise and make do. All the above said, I would stay again and I would also recommend to others.

Owner's reply: Thank you for your review. I am glad you found the apartment tranquil and enjoyed the stunning views. We have now fitted a lovely new kitchen with ample utensils. We also have purchased another DVD for the apartment. At present we are checking out the most popular cable channels which will be suitable for our guests. We hope to welcome you back to Columbus Heights in the near future.

“NOT a Club Med experience: exactly what I wanted”

Reviewed 29 Aug 2012

I was born and grew up in Kingston, so when my adult daughters wanted to holiday like a local, I looked for a Columbus Heights condominium. Only disadvantage is the long walk to Turtle Beach for which you have to pay a small entrance fee, but I rented a car so we wouldn't have to walk uphill to go "home." I like the architecture and the Jamaican landscaping, the view, the breeze, and being high above the bay. My daughters suffered from the mosquitoes but I think the stinging insects are far worse closer to the beach. Being close to the pool was great to relieve the humid heat without an overdose of tropical sun. I was able to engage a cook for dinners and we went food shopping together in the supermarket and the open air market on day one. Ms Brown is a lovely person and very flexible. Only the bedroom is air-conditioned which ensures a cool restful sleep. Even with the ceiling fans, you may not be comfortable inside the rest of the condo unless a breeze is blowing. The hexagonal open verandah is great except when it rains. So we really felt the vagaries of the weather and were Internet-free for a week, which is what I wanted. Driving on Main Street is a harrowing experience and not recommended for non-Jamaicans. If you walk around and stay out of hotels and hotel restaurants as we did, you will notice the poverty and the grime and you will be stared at and invited to buy many things you may not want. I admit I used my broadest Jamaican accent but even without, you will get better prices if you exchange money and ask to pay in Jamaican dollars. My US-born and bred adult daughters enjoyed the visit and the many conversations with local merchants and service workers, and we all loved the "home-cooked" Jamaican food: escoveitched red snapper, curry goat, roasted breadfruit, stewed oxtail, green bananas, ackee, festival, bammy and more. Guineps were in season and sold on street corners. If you want my kind of holiday and have a sense of humor and an appreciation of natural beauty, this rental will work for you. Janet was very responsive, helpful and a pleasure to deal with.

Owner's reply: Thank you for your positive review. I am glad you enjoyed your stay at Columbus Heights and your holiday in Jamaica.

“I absolutely love this apartment!”

Reviewed 18 Aug 2012

It is super cute and comfortable. What a bargain!!! I love how the apartment opens up to welcome the breath taking view of the bay. I relaxed on the gazebo and watched two ships dock during my stay. I enjoyed watching the humming birds each day as they feed on the flowers outside the window by the dining area. The view of the bay at night is stunning! The service was EXCELLENT! Bruce quickly took care of all my requests and he was very helpful. The housekeeper is a sweetheart and made sure everything was neat and clean. The hill is a beast but it helped me work off all those extra dumplings that I refused to take home. LOL! Everything was at my finger tips and I loved it. Local food was a short walk down the hill at fishermen's village. Look for Ricky, he’ll show you around and cook you up some tasty lobster. I enjoyed the beach every day on the island village side. It was only 200JMD. But when it came to food and drinks I took a very short walk to the bar at fishermen’s village. It was cheaper. The general food market, the craft market and many other cute little shops are just a 10 minute walk. Curry's Restaurant in Chuck's Plaza near the center of town has the best food in Ochi. Any local can show you the way. I plan to stay here every time I visit. I can’t wait until my next vacation!

Owner's reply: Thank you for your positive review. Yes, I agree the view is absolutely magical. It's amazing to watch the cruise ships from the gazebo, what an experience. Although, the hill is a killer, it only takes 10 minute leisurely walk down the hill and your in the heart of Ochi, where the market, shops, bars and restaurants and the beach are at at your fingertips. Just hop in a local taxi for 300 Jamaican dollars (approx)£2.50 to take you up the hill. Hope to welcome you back to Columbus Heights in the near future.

“50th Birthday Holiday”

Reviewed 6 Apr 2012

I came to Jamaica for the first time in December 1996 and I always wanted to come back because then I had stayed in an all inclusive and saw nothing of the real Jamaica. This time I wanted to be a native! Thank goodness for Mr Crawford and Charlie who both looked after us. We had one day when we went to the farmers market on our own and I wish to goodness that we hadn't. We didn't realise we had to pay the price for someone "friendly" saying hello to us !!!! $200US later, we felt absolutely robbed. We won't be going back to Jamaica purely for the fact that we were sick to death of being constantly hassled and hustled. It was the most expensive holiday we had ever had. I won't put anyone off from going but if you do go please make sure that you find Charlie on Ocho Rios Bay Beach and his friend, the lovely Mr Crawford, of Auntie Mama's Taxi Tours, because they will, without a shadow of a doubt, take great care of you. And when you do find them, please make sure that you tell them I sent you to look for them. The staff at Columbus Heights were very friendly but I really did not expect to have to pay Bruce for taking a telephone message for me !!!! Bridgitte, the housekeeper, is beautiful and so will her new baby which is due in October. Patrick the gardener took liberties by coming into the property when we weren't there and helping himself to ice from the freezer and cigarettes which were on the table. That upset Bridgitte immensely and I reported Patrick to the lovely Churchill. Janet, my dear, your bathroom and kitchen are disgusting and you really must go out there and take a look for yourself. The lounge, balcony and bedroom were ok but I must say, the bed was very comfortable. Your property could really do with a lick of paint and kitchen/bathroom refurb. All in all, not bad but we won't be returning.

Owner's reply: Thank you for your review. I am sorry you had some bad experiences in Jamaica. Regarding the staff, I have spoken to them, and it was not their intention to offend you in any way but I apologise for any inconvenience caused. Regarding the property, we decorate the property every year and will be flying out to Jamaica very soon to rectify any areas that need improving.
