The ancient medieval walled town of Obidos just is a short walk from our luxury villa with its cobbled streets lined with houses shops gifts and crafts a plenty, bars restaurants and many churches.there is also a post office, pharmacy internet cafe ,garage and tourist office in walking distance,.
There are numerous festivals held throughout the year to be enjoyed these include the World Chocolate making festival, Easter festival, Medieval festival Piano and opera festival, and Christmas festival. The Obidos lagoon is about 10 min drive for fishing boating and water sports.Great surfing beaches within 20 minutes drive.
The magnificent historical town of Óbidos, located some 80 km Northwest of Lisbon, only a few kilometers away from the Atlantic Ocean, is one of the most beautiful and picturesque sites of the Iberian Peninsula.
Founded by the Celts in 308 BC, Óbidos was conquered by the Romans in the first century and occupied by the Moors in the eighth century. The latter built the town wall, which still today is completely intact surrounding the white washed houses painted with blue or yellow bars. The medieval town of Óbidos with its castle, churches and historic monuments, is blessed with a moderate climate where the warm southern sunshine mingles with a cool mountain breeze. The natural enchantment of Óbidos, the traditional hospitality of its inhabitants and the Portuguese regional culinary delights including fresh seafood and local wines turn this place into a must for any tourist visiting Portugal.
The lagoon of Obidos is the largest sea-water lagoon in Portugal, and provides a wonderful array of activities to those who chance to enjoy this experience. It has an average depth of 2 meters, and extensive areas from it's sandy beach surround extend only to half a meter making a truly family orientated place to be !
Some water sports are available too, since in certain parts the depth reaches 5 meters making water-skiing and other activities easily suitable. At the junction of the lagoon and the sea, the sandy beaches extend around on both sides and visitors have the choice to enjoy the Atlantic waves or the quite and relatively still waters of the lagoon - all from the same beach !
Around the perimeter of the lagoon, there are beautiful quite walks and cycle tracks embracing the pine woods, beach side restaurants and on the north side, the lovely small village of Foz which bodes several fish restaurants, cafe's and beach-side amenities. To the nearside of the lagoon, is the lovely peaceful Praia Do Bom Sucesso - miles of soft white sanded beach surrounding the lagoon creating safe swimming & bathing for all.The city of Caldas da Rainha is 5km away with great shopping, daily outdoor fresh fruit and vegetable market and town park with children's playground, boating lake and museum.
A new indoor shopping center has opened in the town center a multi-screen cinema that shows movies in English. There are several beach resorts and 5 star golf courses within 15-20 minutes drive from the villa.
The well known golf resort of Praia del Rey is 15 minutes drive away with two more 5 star golf courses in Obidos due for completion in the near future.
Beautiful beaches such as Sao Martinho do Porto ,Foz Da Relho, Baleal, are fifteen minutes drive away
Further afield just 30 minutes drive are the lovely fishing towns of Nazare and Peniche......
The historical monastery and picturesque town of Alcobacha, and the shrine of Fatima are also well worth a visit.
There are vineyards 20 minutes drive from the villa where you can sample the fine champagne and wines of the region.
Obidos is named after its wall fortifications, so it is worth your time to stroll around the city limits and look at some of these well-preserved structures that lend such a medieval air to the small city. The gate and main entrance into the city, called the Porta da Vila, is located at the south end of Obidos. As with any other major Portuguese town, Obidos has a main cathedral dedicated to the Virgin Mary called the Igreja de Santa Maria. This church dates back to the Middle Ages, when Portuguese Afonso Henriques first wrested control of Obidos from the Moors, who had owned much of the Iberian Peninsula since the fall of Rome. There is another, more recent church outside the city limits called the Santuário do Senhora da Pedro. Its architecture is more modern and its solitary presence upon a hill is quite imposing. The church's construction began in 1740, but parts of it were not finished until the 1900s. Also take some time to see the castle, which serves as a pousada. It overlooks the town from the hill at the center of Obidos. Other interesting landmarks throughout the city are the ancient village stocks (where petty criminals were punished) and an old aqueduct.Though many of Obidos's streets remain narrow and cobblestoned, there are also more modern buildings in the small city. For example, in front of the medieval Igreja de Santa Maria, there is the Espaço Internet do Concelho de Obidos, a free city Internet access point.

“Obidos was breathtaking and the villa was nice.”

Reviewed 11 Sep 2016

We loved Obidos but the villa had a problem with a leaky sink and there were ants in both upstairs bedrooms. Had trouble getting in touch with the caretaker and message wasn't passed on to him due to language barrier. The pool and outside was a little bit small but the rest of the villa was lovely. The views were breathtaking and it was easy to reach from the airport. Lots of beautiful places to visit. Wish we had had more time to explore.

Owner's reply: Dear Guests Thank you for your comment. Sorry for the flight to the sink. This is obviously unpredictable ... We think our caretaker could quickly solve the problem? Regarding ants, the villa is in a rural area .... We regularly sprinkle anti-ant powder. We hope that these inconveniences did not spoil your stay and we look forward to welcoming you next time to continue your discovery of this beautiful area ! Best Regards, Christine & Michel

“Top spec accommodation , clean and spacious”

Reviewed 27 Aug 2016

We stayed for 10 days, 2 adults and 3 children. We had a wonderful time, we were very sad to leave. The accommodation had everything you would need, hair dryer, ironing board and iron, towels and the kitchen was very well equipped. The supermarket is only a 10 minute walk away, where they speak English. The pool was enjoyed by our children, a little bit cold for us but nice at the end of a hot day. The Wifi speed was great, our children were connected on ipods and things like that and it gave them something to do when their energy ran low. It was very clean on arrival and they had left food and drinks to welcome us. It's an easy 15 minute walk into town with children, where there are restaurants, cash machines, bars and plenty of things to see and do. We used a local taxi firm and they were really good, always arrived on time and it seemed fairly priced. We hope to revisit in the not too distant future.

Owner's reply: Thank you so much, Lucy, for your very positive comment ! We are happy you enjoyed our villa and you spent a great holiday in Obidos. We try to do our best to satisfy our guests. We look forward to welcoming you next time ! Christine & Michel

“The house has everything you'll need if you are with young children. If you're not it still has everything you'll need!”

Walk up to the old town of Obidos, walk through fruit orchards and even walk to the well stocked grocery store. And all of that a one hour bus ride from Lisbon if you want a bit of city tossed in.

“So good we stayed there twice”

Reviewed 3 Jun 2011

This was the perfect place for us. It was clean, cheap, in a nice location and had a hint of luxury about it. The kids had a great time, I had an even better one and the owner was very accommodating. I'd definitely recommend it.

We are committed to making your stay with us even better and we hope the price reflects this thinking. See you all in Aug and maybe 2012 can make 3/3. Sincerely John & Niamh Campbell.

You can walk to Obidos, which is an interesting village with lots of places to eat. The Medieval festival was on when we stayed which was fun. Make sure you walk round the castle walls for fantastic views and try the a glass of Ginja !

We spent a fantastic week at this villa. It is well situated in a quiet residential area, a short walk to the picturesque Obidos, and ideally located for exploring the Silver Coast. The villa is very spacious, with modern decor and well equipped kitchen. Woud highly recommend it.

“Great first toddler holiday”

Reviewed 31 May 2011

The welcome pack was wonderful and the rooms were all superbly prepared including kitchen. My mother-in-law enjoyed watering the plants as if in her own home!! It was extremely useful to have the owner in contact whenever needed which made things even easier. We were pleased with all the provisions made for our toddler (TV channel; toys etc) For me, I was happy with the music selection it was definitely my taste! Of course, the pool was fantastic too! Taxi was good, all journeys made were at the prices quoted by owner.

Owner's reply: Hi, Many thanks for reviewing our wonderful villa. We are delighted you had a fantastic time and the villa lived up to the standards highlighted. As we promote the villa to be within walking distance to the town we are so happy this option was favoured and you got the opportunity of leaving the car behind while sampling the local cafes bars & eateries. We hope you can return to us however in the meantime we wish happy holidaying and best wishes. Sincerely, John & Niamh campbell.

“Lovely villa.”

Reviewed 30 May 2011

Our stay was quite a while ago now so building in the area may well have ceased. The villa was lovely, beautifully furnished and equipped. Our only issue with it really was was the aforementioned building work opposite, new villas going up, which started quite early most days. Most of the nearby villas are new and were empty, we only had one couple as neighbours during our stay so it was pretty quiet! The villa is located on the outskirts of the town and the grocery shop is a couple of minutes or so drive away so car hire is a necessity here. Although the villa is lovely we did think it a tad expensive considering the location (not walking distance to facilities) and compared with some others in the area which is the only reason we have not subsequently returned to this particular house.

Owner's reply: Many thanks for your kind review and we are so happy you took the time to review Villa Obidos, regarding the comments made - the villa and its surrounding area is now a mature estate filled with holidaying families all summer. The villa is set in quiet residential area catering for local families. The villa is 10min walk - 5min drive to a large modern supermarket and 15min walk - 10min drive to the centre of Obidos. Most families choose our villa as it is one of few with this location and the option of leaving the car behind. The villa's location was the main reason we bought in Portugal as we insisted on being able to walk to all facilities with our young family. As the villa is furnished to a high standard with many extras included (linin towels beach towels extensive welcome pack no cleaning charge english channels DVD's childrens safety pack)we believe the price reflects our committment to making your stay with us as comfortable & enjoyeble as possible. Many thanks again for your comments and would hope you return to view the finished product. Sincerely John & Niamh Campbell
