The Priory Cottage is a 19th century cottage set on ¾ of an acre on land that was originally part of the 12th century priory in the village of Passavant-sur-Layon. It is beautifully situated, directly facing the 11th century walls of the chateau. Just on the other side of the chateau is a picturesque fishing lake - a perfect setting for picnics or quiet walks. The village is located on the River Layon, famous for it's wines, particularly the Coteau de Layon dessert wine. The property was totally renovated during 2011 / 2012, modernising the interior whilst retaining the original features and charm. There are 2 large, attractively furnished, bedrooms, one with a kingsize (UK) bed and the other with two singles. The living room retains much character with original beams, tomette floors. There is also a 32 inch Flat Screen TV. The fully equipped kitchen/diner leads out to the sunny south facing terrace complete with Weber BBQ, dining setting and an umbrella where you can relax whilst enjoying the views across to the chateau and the countryside beyond. At the rear of the cottage is a private pool area featuring a large swimming pool plus terrace area with a table and chairs, 2 sun loungers and an umbrella. The 8m x 5m pool is for the private use of guests only. The pool area looks out over the beautiful local countryside. In the local area, there are many wineries and our region is ideal for walking, cycling or sightseeing with chateaux and old towns to explore.

The Pays de la Loire region
Ideally situated at the edge of the Poitou-Charente's micro-climate, yet close to the chateaux and stunning scenery of the Loire Valley. The Loire Valley, known as the Garden of France, is famous for its scores of romantic Chateaux which sit between the river and the undulating vineyards. The Anjou wine region combines the culture of centuries, with a great number of fascinating wine 'domaine's to be explored.....and the region is steeped in history, with so much to see and do.
Nueil sur Layon
Just 1800 metres from the cottage is the large village of Nueil-sur-Layon, with a bakery, a supermarket, a restaurant, a post office plus other commerce. Banks, more restaurants and larger supermarkets are all available in Doue-la-Fontaine, just 10 minutes away by car. In the local area, there are a number of wineries offering tasting and cellar-door sales. With so much unspoilt countryside, open fields, gentle hills and woodland our region is ideal for walkers or cyclists and the wildlife is abundant. If history and architecture are your interests, you will be spoilt for choice with so many stunning chateaux and old towns to explore.
The cottage is less than 25 minutes to the historic towns of Saumur, Thouars, Doue La Fontaine and Montreuil-Bellay all of which have much to see and do. Just a little further afield are the towns of Chinon,Fontevraud and Angers with their strong connections to English history.
The cottage is only about an hour away from two of the most popular family attractions in Europe, the Puy de Fou historical adventure theme park and the Futuroscope, science fiction theme park.

"Peaceful, well equipped and lots to do nearby"
We had a wonderful holiday staying in this cottage. Phil and Janet are excellent hosts with a wealth of knowledge on what to do in the area. The village is very peaceful, just what we wanted. Our children are 7 and 11 and had a great time enjoying the pool daily, with trips to nearby chateaux, markets, zoo, caves etc. The cottage itself is charming with exposed beams and is very well equipped, spotless throughout. I would thoroughly recommend this place to all.

When we arrived at the cottage we could not have had a better place to stay. Phil and Janet (the owners) were so informative. Everything in the cottage was top quality and there was nothing else you could possibly want in equipment and comfort. We would definitely recommend a stay here. The pool is marvellous. It is so peaceful if you want to unwind this is the place to stay.
