A CAR IS RECOMMENDED to fully appreciate the Tuscan countryside, although not essential, as buses run from the village (limited service weekends, school holidays and bank holidays). There is also a small unmanned train station 20 minutes walk from the house. This service goes from the village to both Lucca and Viareggio, Prato and an early morning train takes you to Florence. Please check out trenitalia for times and service routes. Lucca is 7km away, only 10 minutes by car, but can take up to 20 mins by bus circulating the nearby villages on route. Last buses to Nozzano around 8pm (winter schedule). A taxi can cost between E15 and E20 from Lucca to Nozzano.

The Tuscany region
Lucca's array of wonderfully intact historical sites makes it a must-see stop on any Tuscan itinerary. The mediaeval city walls still stand—you can hike or bike on top of them. Also visit the Duomo di San Martino and the Roman amphitheatre.
Crowning a rocks relief on the right bank of the river Serchio, a few kilometers outside of the city of Lucca, rises still today the fortified village of Nozzano, with its crenelated keep and towers and town walls. The castle was one of the most powerful and famous stronghold erected at defense of the the southwest borderlands between the territories of Lucca and Pisa.
There is much to do and explore nearby and further afield. Nozzano is centrally located for day trips to Florence, Pisa, Lucca, Versillia, Puccini's Torre del Lago, Garfagnana, Sienna, Livorno and the White Sands. For younger members of the family there are enjoyments such as Pinocchio Park, adventure parks, outdoor swimming pool, clubbing etc. For those who enjoy to keep fit, Lucca is famous for its historical walls, where people run, walk and cycle to keep fit or just to enjoy the beautiful views of the city. On the first weekend of September every year a Medieval Festival is staged in the castle walls and the village within the castle walls is transformed to medieval times, with jesters, jugglers, musicians, street artists, costume, food and wine.
Nozzano itself is a very small village with basic amenities and lends itself to wonderful countryside walks, including the pretty Serchio riverside cycle and walkway which takes you directly into Lucca (8km).
Within the little village square (all walking distance of house) is a bar/tobacconist (which serves great cappuccino and pastries), hairdressers, little haberdashery shop (a few gifts, clothes, toys, linen etc), small family run baker, butcher (also providing a few food products), chemist and post office (open mornings until 1pm). Just along from the house is a fantastic restaurant/pizzeria (also take-out). About a ten minute walk away is a small food and grocery shop, open daily. The unmanned train station is about a 20 min walk away.

"A fantastic place"
Set in a pretty village just a stone's throw from Lucca, this villa provided exactly what we wanted- a countryside retreat near places of interest and with all the comforts of a family home. The village of Nozzano is a peaceful, picturesque place that is nestled a comfortable distance from Lucca, torre de lago and the stunning Tuscan coast. Despite being a very small village, we found everything we needed near our villa, a bar open late, a fantastic restaurant not to be missed, a well-stocked shop and a bakery where we sampled the most outstanding breads and pastries of the entire trip! The villa itself is well situated, nicely decorated (with a huge, comfy bed!) a well equipped kitchen, living room with a big TV and DVD player for the quieter nights in and a courtyard that benefits from direct sun until mid-afternoon then welcome shade into the early evening which we found perfect for al fresco dining. Public transport is a little limited so a car is a good idea, the villa would make a great base for a cycling holiday with a safe place to store bikes and being ideally situated to explore the surrounding countryside, we have already booked a return stay to do exactly that! We had a wonderful stay here and benefitted from a really friendly, helpful owner who ensured a very comfortable stay for us, we look forward to seeing you again.
