Description from owner

Description

A lovely house in a gorgeous old farm that has been in the same family for 5 generations. Slightly faded at the edges this adds to its attraction. Nestled amongst the ancient ruins of Noto Antica and the spectacular Sicilian countryside this property leaves guests feeling like they stepped back in time. Noto Antica dates back to the pre 1693 Netum where there are ruins of the old city, a sublime combination of Sikel's necropolis dug into the rocks and 16th century buildings.
The house is an ideal country retreat offering quiet and solitude in a magical pastoral setting. House arises on the site of an ancient monastery of the Orders of Friars Minor, built in the 1451 and razed to the ground by the great earthquake that destroyed ancient Noto in 1693. It is placed 700 m away from the 'Porta Aurea' of Noto Antica and about 10 Km away from today's city, and it is marked by the extraordinary beauty of the surrounding naturalistic, archaeological and historical landscape

Location description from owner

The Sicily region

Sicily - that beautiful island off the southern-most tip of Italy is one of the few places in Europe that genuinely can be called unspoilt! Its scenery has a natural and varied beauty that is truly breathtaking. Rugged, sometimes snow-capped mountains reaching for the sky are interspaced with rich meadows, adorned with wild flowers: during spring and autumn, spectacularly green and lush, yet during the sun-scorched summer, transformed into pastel shades of greens, yellows and browns. Citrus and olive groves stretch into the distance and abundant pine forests lend the air that unmistakeable Mediterranean aroma. Punctuated by the occasional farmhouse and Tuscan-like hilltop village the countryside is remarkably empty. The island has a spectacularly indented coastline, with sweeping bays and blood-red volcanic rocks plunging into the deep blue sea, and snow-capped Mount Etna providing a magnificent backdrop. At the crossroads of almost every Mediterranean civilisation, home to the richest cities in the Greek Empire, Sicily was conquered by Rome, the Moors, Normans, Spanish, French and finally the Italians. Their magnificent relics include temples, amphitheatres, churches, monasteries, villas and atmospheric old towns, with many being the most outstanding of their type in the world. With an enviable climate, a fabulous cuisine plus some of the most accommodating and friendly people you will find anywhere, Sicily is an excellent destination to discover and you will be made welcome on this beautiful island.

Noto

Noto is considered the "Capital of the Baroque," and is described as a lost paradise, a “treasure”, a gold-toned stone garden, a living book, the emblem of wealth in the Baroque age in Sicily.. It's impossible to think about a visit in Sicily without admiring its masterpieces, recently declared humanity heritage by UNESCO. A stay in Noto will allow you to visit the wild south-western side of Sicily and its incredible cultural and natural treasures. You can enjoy the most beautiful beaches of the island, for example Eloro (ask people for directions if you want to find it, there are no markings!), Marchesa beach, or Cala Mosca inside the natural reserve of Vendicari. Spare your time also to visit the several baroque villages in the nearby, among which Modica, Ragusa Ibla, Scicli, besides Ortigia (the old Siracusa) and its Greek Theatre, Ispica Caves, Cava Grande del Cassibile, and many many others.

“Amazing!”

Reviewed 21 May 2015

This property is over 100 years old, but has been beautifully maintained and updated. It sits above the ancient ruins of Noto Antica, a town destroyed by an earthquake in 1693.The view of the surrounding hills is amazing. Inside, there is a fully functioning kitchen as well as nice bathrooms and Wifi. The property is clean and comfortable, and the host family very accommodating. From here, Noto, Vendicari, Modica, Ragusa or Siracusa are all an hour or less away by car. I absolutely recommend this property to anyone looking for a great base camp from which to tour east side of Sicily, or a property to disappear in for an extended period of time.
