Location description from owner

The Sicily region

Sicily is the southernmost region of Italy.
Sicily is an island in the Mediterranean Sea, and its capital is Palermo. It is the largest and the most densely populated island of the Mediterranean. It is one of the most important tourist destinations of Europe: in fact, in the eighteenth century, it was the last stop on the Grand Tour, the journey that young European aristocrats, mostly British, used to make in Europe, many in Italy, to improve their education and their spiritual formation.
The climate in Sicily is "Mediterranean", with hot summers and mild winters. Coastal Sicily has a subtropical climate, as it corresponds to climatic parameters of this type. The average annual temperature on the coast is at least 18° C and this fact explains the presence of sub-tropical vegetation which has perfectly adapted to most of the island, next to the native Mediterranean vegetation. Palm trees, bougainvillea and banana plants are plant species of tropical origin that abound in Sicily thanks to the mildness of its climate.
The island of Sicily has been visited for centuries by Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs and Normans. Each of these civilizations has left a mark on the culture, on the traditions and on the art of this beautiful region, with Greek temples, Roman mosaics and Arab and Norman buildings.
However, you can also find fascinating beauty almost everywhere: lovely coastline, picturesque villages, unspoiled nature and fashionable resorts, renowned wineries where you can taste excellent wine and authentic Sicilian cuisine.
In Sicily there is everything you could desire for your holiday!
If there is a place that has no "off-season," Sicily is one of these. A green island, rich in landscapes, art and culture. It is an island known for its beaches but also a destination for the spirit. Sicily, therefore, out of season is ideal to visit cities and places of art, to find gastronomic products without the pressure of crowds of tourists, to taste the new oils and cheeses, to eat good fish and to take advantage of a mild climate without the heat of the summer.
The list of typical products is very long. Each province (and in many cases, each town) has its own speciality. Sicilian "granita" is universally known. Less known but equally good is the "latte di mandorla" (almond milk), a drink that looks like milk but has the flavour of sweet almonds. Among the savory products there are "arancini" (rice balls) and "focacce" (durum wheat buns) with fillings made of parsley and tomatoes or cauliflower or other vegetables. There are many meals with aubergines, such as "caponata", "parmigiana" and "pasta alla norma". Even the fish, in many varieties, is an important ingredient of Sicilian cuisine: very famous in this area is the "tunnina a cipuddata" (tuna with onion) and "pesce spada alla Messinese" (swordfish with capers, olives and tomatoes). Typical of Trapani is couscous, main dish of the culinary tradition of the southern Mediterranean, which is prepared with both fish and meat. Among the sweets of the region we must not forget "cannoli", "cassata", "torrone" (nougat), most of these prepared with sweet almonds of Noto and pistacchio nuts of Bronte.
There are many places you need to visit and spend time in: Cefalu, Taormina and Mount Etna, Europe's highest and most active volcano (3,323 meters above sea level) near Catania in the north east of the island, the majestic monuments in the Valley of the Temples of Agrigento, the beautiful Trapani area and Erice and the historic centres of Palermo and Catania .
On the eastern side of the island there is the Baroque architecture of Ragusa Ibla, Noto and Modica a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The house is situated next to the beach of Lido di Noto with has a score of "5 sails", the equilavent of a blue flag, which assures clear blue water as well as good facilities close to the water's edge.
The house is ideally located at the centre of Lido di Noto and you can find bars, food shops and restaurants.
Recommended Bars: Caffè Sicilia in Noto, one of the best pastry shops and bars in Italy according to the Gambero Rosso Guide. Restaurantsin Noto: Crocifisso; Dammuso Baglieri, Fontana d'Ercole, Marpessa, Meliora Il Cantuccio and the Lounge bar Anche gli Angeli.
Lido di Noto is located a little less than an hour's drive from the International Airport of Catania, with cheap flights from all over Europe.
Besides the beach in front of the house, with its crystal clear waters and beach of golden sand, there are, just a few kilometers away, other beautiful beaches, among the most beautiful on the island, including the nearby Cala Mosche, Eloro, Marianelli, Marchesa, San Lorenzo, Cittadella, Portopalo, the island of Capo Passero and the “Isola delle Correnti”. The famous Natural Reserve of Vendicari is a wonderful place where you can find unspoiled natural beauty, where in some seasons rare species of migratory birds nest which makes this an ideal place for bird-watching.
Leaving the beach behind, you can take the roads inland and go searcing for those intense flavors and aromas which give identity to this territory rich in culinary excellence, and great wines.
The house is also located just 5 kms away from the beautiful baroque town of Noto, included in UNESCO World Heritage List, with the cathedral and its numerous palaces and churches, a triumph of Sicilian baroque, and it is described by the art historian Cesare Brandi as the "Garden of Stone". In every corner you can find baroque friezes, capitals, churches and noble palaces.
In Noto you should not miss: the characteristic procession of San Corrado, the Patron Saint of Noto, which occurs on February 19th and on the last Sunday of August; the religious traditions of Easter week; the Infiorata, a flower festival which occurs in third and fourth week of May.
30 kms away is Siracusa, the capital of Magna Graecia with the old center of Ortigia and its splendid archaelogical area and Greek Theater.
The surrounding area offers a variety of cultural attractions and other beautiful baroque towns: Modica, Scicli, Ragusa Ibla and Palazzolo Acreide.
There are also sanctuaries and the ruins of the ancient city of “Noto Antica”, the mosaics of “Villa del Tellaro” and the necropolis of Pantalica.
The caves and the gorges of Cava Grande of Cassibile are worth a visit with the small emerald lakes where you can swim, and the river area of Valle dell'Anapo, with it's fish and fresh water crabs.
So, this is a good base to explore south-eastern Sicily, with its cities, Blue Flag beaches, trails and gorges, to visit the Greek and Roman ruins in the surrounding countryside or go to one of the wineries in the area.
The mild climate, the mountain paths, ancient villages, caves, churches and convents are unequalled.
I recommend that you spend at least two weeks' holiday in this part of Sicily. This will be just enough to be able to enjoy it's masterpieces and the unique and excellent cuisine and great wines.

“another wonderful week”

Reviewed 4 May 2015

This was our second visit to this apartment. We returned this time with our adult son. Livia and Horatio's welcome was very warm despite the late hour of our arrival following flight delays. The apartment is immaculately clean and very comfortable. The wifi is good. The kitchen is well equipped and the range of information enabled us to plan a week of great walks and exploration in beautiful weather. The wild flowers in April are spectacular. We chose to travel to Syracuse by train from Noto rather than face the traffic and it was very straighforward. The location is excellent and generally quiet apart from occasional noise from the neighbouring bar. Livia presented us with wine, oranges and olive oil from the family farm. We certainly hope to visit again.

“Tutto perfetto, nei minimi dettagli!”

Reviewed 10 Jun 2014

Traue keinem Zebrastreifen. Merke: Wer zuerst kommt fährt auch zuerst! Egal wie. Und dabei immer kräftig hupen!

“very nice Christmas stay”

Reviewed 24 Jan 2013

we spent 2 weeks around Christmas  in this wonderful appartment. It is located in front of the beach of Lido di Noto. As we were there in December, it was not warm enough to swim (sea temp around 16°) but warm enough to lay in the sun and let the children play in the beautiful sand for hours. Temperatures were around 18° at midday, and we could have lunch on the terrasse - 12 out of 14 days were sunny - sunset is early however in december (4.30pm). From sunset onwards you need a good jacket... the village was quite empty as it was off season and restaurants and most supermarkets closed but it was not a problem for us as we enjoy quiet places and we could find everything we needed in a small supermarket in lido di noto 300m from the flat. There are many nice places to see in the region - you can spend easily 2 weeks sightseeing and relaxing on the beautiful beaches. At our arrival Livia was waiting for us in the apartment and welcomed us nicely with oranges and mandarines from her garden! Livia was very friendly and extremely helpful from the beginning. We felt at home right away. The apartment was spacious, clean and nice. We slept very well with the noise of the waves. we woke up every morning with a nice sunrise on the sea which we could watch from our bed. At the beginning of our stay we experienced difficulties to keep the flat warm with electrical heaters, but as soon as we mentioned the problem to Livia she looked for a solution and brought an additional gas heater, there was then no problem any more. We just enjoyed a very nice christmas holiday, in the sunny Sicily, asking ourselves when we could come back again to see all the places we did not have the time to visit. thank you Livia - hope to see you soon again. Elisa, Christoph, Mia and Lori

“Great place to stay-the sound of waves crashing on the shore”

Reviewed 5 Nov 2012

This apartment is well placed right on top of the beach and is very clean and well presented. Owner Livia made us very welcome with a bottle of wine and some home produced olive oil. It had just about everything we would need in the kitchen and plenty of spare duvets if we were cold at night. We loved the bright and airy living area and main bedroom with sweeping views of the bay outside. The sound of waves pounding the shoreline at night was memorable and made for some deep sleep and vivid dreams! Lido di Noto is obviously very quiet this time of year but the peacefulness suited us just fine. The pizza restaurant across the street was open and serves a delicious Pasta alla Norma, and the little deli up from the square had any basic supplies we needed. We would highly recommend this apartment and it is in a good position from which to explore the interesting towns of Siracusa and Noto as well as following in the footsteps of Inspector Montalbano which is filmed in Ragusa, Scicli and Punta Secca. A car is essential to get around

Grazie ancora Livia! :-) Alessandro

“Perfect location, very clean and well presented”

Reviewed 9 Jun 2012

The apartment is very well looked after with a well appointed kitchen. It overlooks the beach which has a small beach bar, perfect for morning coffee. The rooms are bright and airy with views out to sea, the sun comes in first thing in the morning which is a welcome delight. The town has a number of places to eat and the small supermarket in the square is run by a very friendly family. Many small things that helped with our stay such as hairdryer and mosquito plugs, Livilia also gave us some olive oil from her farm and some very nice wine which was a added touch. A car is a must if you want to tour the area and spend some time in the fantastic city of Noto, Noto has great architecture, good restaurants and it is a must visit city. We would highly recommend this apartment.

“Next to the sea. No internet.”

Reviewed 3 Jun 2012

Located on the beach of Lido di Noto, easy to find. We were at the end of May and it is still of season, possibly because of that it is quiet and that is that we wanted. Clean and fully equiped house for family with children. It has two bedrooms and living room and two balconies (one overlooking the beach another street), large enogth kitchen. Has parking space (remember a little bit wider car will not fit, we were lucky Lancia Musa). From it's location you can easily acess nearby towns and places of interest. Three significant downsides (at least for us) are: all bed matresses are very sof, second is that shower problem needs to be solved - very tiny hot water tank two people can take a shower with warm water then you have to wait. And the last he was no internet, but in case of necessety there was a restaraunt across the street which has WiFi and after you eat there you will have password. Later I accesed net from the bench near the restaraunt. Some adds from our son - it has plenty of beach toys. My wife enjoed stay at the balcony in the evening with a glass of wine.

“Beautiful Views”

Reviewed 20 May 2012

We just returned from our stay at the Sunrise over the Sea apartment in Lido di Noto.. We had a great time, waking up in the morning to the views of that blue ocean took our breath away every morning. Breakfast on the balcony overlooking the beach (or on the beach on some mornings) really is priceless, just like falling asleep to the sound of the waves. You really are that close to the beach! The apartment is fully equipped, you couldn't ask for anything more especially in the kitchen. It looks just like the pictures, fresh and modern. There is even an outdoor shower and umbrella's to take with you to the beach. Lido di Noto was quiet this time a year with only a few other sun worshipers on the beach, the weather was perfect bikini beach weather. I can recommend a trip to Noto and Syracuse is a must see, beautiful Marina and architecture. This holiday rental is the perfect getaway if you fancy a relaxing beach vacation, clear water and sandy beaches. If you want to do some exploring there is plenty to see in the area, Mount Etna to name one. We can highly recommend this place, it's beautiful and peaceful and Livia and her husband were happy to help with anything we needed or wanted.
