The Somerset region

North Somerset: A picturesque region of huge rolling cornfields, immense views, dark chocolate ploughed fields and hedgerows alive with songbirds. The limestone Mendip Hills are splendid for walking and contain spectacular Cheddar Gorge, a National Nature Reserve, and the caves where cheese is still matured.

The gorgeous city of Bath with its natural hot springs is a 'World Heritage Site' steeped in Roman and Georgian history; it was much loved by Jane Austen and is still very culturally alive, with smart restaurants, boutique shops and modern spa with natural thermal springs.

In Somerset's middle is the un-English flatness of Sedgemoor (where Monmouth enticed the West Country's farmers into battle) with cattle at sunset like a classical painting and villages on low hills above willow-banked streams. Nearby are Glastonbury with its tor and legends (and festival) and Wells, England's smallest city, with its tremendous cathedral.

There is much to visit and marvel at in north Somerset, both natural and man-made, and from mysterious ancient monuments, dramatic walking country and buzzing cities, to sleepy old towns and cosy pubs serving local cider, there's something special for everyone.

Norton St Philip

Norton St Philip: pretty village (two pubs - one thought to be Britain's oldest, shop, church) of historic cottages, once a thriving centre for the wool trade, 7 miles from Bath (beautiful city, Roman baths and thermal spa for bathing). Longleat Safari Park, 14 miles; the coast at Weston-super-Mare, 33. Bristol, 24 miles. Central for touring.
