TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence Winner

Brackenlea Cottage is a charming 200 year old stone cottage beautifully situated within The Northumberland National Park in the peaceful and historic village of Harbottle. A wonderful hidden gem of a destination, it offers the perfect base for those wanting to experience Northumberland at its very best.

Originally built in 1820, the property has been updated to provide stylish and accommodation for up to 4 guests, whilst retaining its traditional Northumbrian character.

The Cottage:

Brackenlea has been beautifully furnished to provide a cosy and contemporary countryside retreat. It's the perfect size for a couple, but with a second bedroom it can also accommodate children or friends and family. The open plan ground floor has all you need to rustle up a tasty meal and the luxurious leather sofas are ideal to relax and rest tired limbs after a long day of walking or sightseeing. The cottage has been beautifully decorated and restyled with artwork by local artists, Laura Ashley blinds, Tweedmill wool throws and Voyage Maison cushions, all blending in with the woodland animal and countryside theme.

Note: Although there is no garden or terrace, there are grassy areas a short walk from the cottage, a lovely picnic area at the entrance to the castle ruins and of course, abundant walking for miles around!

The cottage is strictly no smoking.

The Area:

The small village of Harbottle is a quiet and idyllic retreat in the heart of Upper Coquetdale with miles of beautiful scenery all around. The ruins of the 12th century medieval Harbottle Castle are just a short walk away and the tranquil River Coquet winds its way past the village down through the valley on its way to Rothbury, 9 miles distant.

The area around Harbottle is perfect for outdoor activities. There is abundant walking, fishing, horse riding, and cycling in the beautiful Cheviot Hills, a Nature Reserve on the doorstep and warm and welcoming pubs to relax in. The views around the cottage are simply stunning and one of the very best walks in the region starts on your own doorstep; up to the mysterious Drake Stone on Harbottle Crags, past Harbottle Lake and through the woods down into Alwinton, before returning on the other side of the river back to Harbottle.

The cottage is also ideally placed for the local attractions of Cragside House, Alnwick Castle & Alnwick Garden with Kielder Water, Kielder Forest and Hadrians Wall, as well as the stunning Northumberland Heritage Coast all under an hour's drive away. The towns of Alnwick, Rothbury, Morpeth and Otterburn are all within easy distance of Brackenlea.

But for those looking to relax in the great outdoors, there is no better place in England - The Northumberland National Park is a place where mobile phones will rarely ring and you can walk, cycle or fish all day in beautiful surroundings and hardly see a soul. Brackenlea Cottage is also located within the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park, Europe’s largest area of protected night sky. Due to its pristine skies it was awarded gold tier designation by the International Dark Sky Association, making it officially the best place in England for people to go to enjoy the heavens.

“Beautiful cottage, beautiful village”

Reviewed 22 Jul 2018

Lovely walks on the doorstep ( & OS maps if needed) and a great base for exploring . The cottage is well appointed and comfortable for returning at the end of a busy day exploring. Really liked the baby gate to keep dogs from upstairs ( we have a dog), great idea!

Owner's reply: Thank you so much for your lovely review!! It’s very much appreciated. Have a lovely summer and you are always welcome.

“Fab cottage”

Reviewed 28 May 2018

Gorgeous little cottage. Just on our way home from a 3 night stay. We were given early check in and a late check out which we were really grateful for. We arrived Friday to a welcome box with lots of snacks. We had a fab time. The cottage had everything you would need and it was dog friendly. The beds were really comfy and we all had 3 good nights sleep. They really have thought of everything. Would definitely stay again. Can’t wait for the next time. Thank you xxx

Owner's reply: Warm thanks to Claire and family for your kind words. We’re so glad you enjoyed your short break and you are more than welcome to return. Thanks again for your lovely review - it always means a lot to us!!

“Excellent Holiday”

Reviewed 26 Jun 2016

We have just returned from our weeks holiday at Brackenlea with our wee Westie. The cottage exceeded our expectations its so tastefully appointed and decorated no "damp holiday cottage" feel. The area was great for our walking and we found many local pubs that were dog friendly (with the exception of one the most anti dog establishments I've ever encountered!) This is the third cottage booked through holiday lettings and they just get better and better. Thank you for letting us use your lovely holiday home.

Owner's reply: Thanks for the lovely feedback and we are so happy that you and your doggie enjoyed the walks! We do too! Would be helpful to know which pub didn't like dogs as we can make a note for future guests. Thanks again and you are welcome back anytime!
