Description

The Isle of Harris is recently voted as the Best Island in Europe, it's not hard to see why Harris's beaches are just as widely regarded. The little village Northton is overlooking Scarista beach, one of the islands most spectacular white sandy beach of South Harris with it's turquoise coloured clear seas and at a walking distance of the 5 Northton Jewel beaches, which are also at a walking distance from the cottage. Grandfathers house is a 4 star graded luxurious cosy cottage, it revels in creativity, quality, luxury and comfort and is popular for a honeymoon cottage. This sweet, cosy, chunky natural stone cottage with deep jewel-like windows was built in 1879 by the grandfather of one of our neighbours, as a black house. Inside are fun furnishings, Suzan's wildlife paintings and, squished under eaves, an open-plan bedroom with a quality memory foam king size bed (200cm long) and ensuite shower room.

After cycling the hills, a good walk, relax by the cosy

After cycling the hills, a good walk, relax by the cosy log/peat burning stove cuddle up with a book and a glass. A romantic truly Hebridean retreat. Grandfathers House sits opposite a seafood joint Croft 36; Julie and Steve are happy to deliver their home made fresh seafood meals piping hot to the cottage.

Gail and Ruben from the Temple Cafe at Northton serve lovely coffee, tea's and lunches and are known for their excellent homebaking. All great after a good walk to the Temple, enjoying the hidden gems of the Outer Hebrides, the best secluded five Norhton white sandy beaches and all to be walked from the cottage!

Further love walks up the hills, or a day out swimming, cycling walking or playing at the spectacular Scarista beach and estuary opposite the cottage.

Jan and Suzan of Beachview Cottages are exceptionally warm, fun hosts who go out of their way for you – or leave you in peace to enjoy fishing, cycling, seal-watching, kayaking, walking or climbing. They can advise you on the best places to go fishing, the nicest walks, family or award winning restaurants to eat out, where to source local produce such as scallops, lobster, crab.

Or if you wish for private painting tuition, Suzan is an international artist and a very enthusiastic teacher.

For wild life, don't go far, you might be surprised to watch a Golden Eagle soaring over the cottage, meet an Otter at the first or third beach as they live there and watch a great variety of birds, like Corncreeks breeding at the croft.

The Northton machair is famous for it's beautiful flowers, like orchids, blue bells and more Alpine flowers alike.

As we have planted many fruit bushes and trees to create a safe wildlife habitat; also the Otters feels at home, we have seen them in our garden over winter twice!

Seals are seen very often and with kayaks you can come very close to them. Porpoises like to play at Scarista beach, keep an eye out for them.

You won't be disappointed coming for a relaxing, romantic and active holiday to the truly unspoilt Isle of Harris!

Location description from owner

The Scotland region

The Hebrides are known for their wildlife, great variety of birds plants/orchids, otters, seals, dolphins, porpoises and even whales. !Last summer with many others we rescued a baby Minky Whale from Leverburgh Harbour, finally the calf swam into the Minch and found her mother.

Local seafood is fantastic, we are happy to help you source lobster, crab, scallops, fish. Restaurants, galleries to visit, at Lewis the Callanish Standing stones, older than Stone Henge, further a Black House Village, the museum to see the Viking chess men. Main attraction is the scenery unspoilt, wild, untamed, walks and clear skies full of glittering stars, or if lucky see the Northern lights, find Aurora Borealis western isles on fb.

“Very relaxing”

Reviewed 2 Aug 2013

We stayed for two weeks in this cozy, fully equipped cottage. We enjoyed the pleasant weather, sun and wind, within walking distance of unsurpassed beaches (so empty). Every day we went for a latte at The Temple Cafe overlooking the bay (also within walking distance). And bought fresh seafood from the self service shop Croft 36, just across the street. The hospitality of Jan and Suzan was wonderful, we felt at home. At Harris Outdoor Adventure we rented mountainbikes to discover Harris. Also the sea kayaking was a unforgettable experience. A place to return!

“A little piece of Hebridean heaven”

Reviewed 19 May 2013

We returned to Northton barely six months after spending a fantastic week at Fulmar cottage (another of Suzan and Jan's lovely cottages), as the pull of the Hebrides proved too much. As both Fulmar and Gannet cottages were already booked, we settled on Grandfathers House and were not disappointed. It is a delightful cottage, so comfortable and perfect for two.It felt like home straightaway. We enjoyed sitting outside (there are various seats placed around the cottage so that you can enjoy the sunshine all day) and in the evening, the wood burning stove made the cottage really cosy. Suzan and Jan go out of their way to ensure that you have a great stay and are so welcoming and helpful. They provide information on places to visit/walk/eat etc and the scenery on the doorstep is truly stunning. Despite being self catering, we didn't cook too much as the Temple Cafe and Croft 36 are really excellent and on your doorstep. It was with a heavy heart that we had to leave again!

“a perfect base for an excellent holiday!”

We had a wonderful time at the Isle of Harris and stayed in Grandfathers House, a cottage well fitted out and ideally suited to the 2 of us. Our hosts, Jan and Suzan, were very warm, enthusiastic and helpful, providing good advice and even fresh fish and lobster! The refurbishing was tasteful, creative, the whole place quite cozy and comfortable and romantic . The cascade of beautiful beaches just a short walk from the door made it a wonderful place to sit and watch the sunset or to start the trek up Caperval for magnificent views of the Outer Hebrides. Have been to St. Kilda, what an amazing experience. Just a perfect base for an excellent holiday!

“Fantastic stay”

Reviewed 19 Jan 2013

We are returning costumers to Harris and especially to beachview cottages. Jan and Suzan are great and welcoming hosts, the cottages, clean, very comfortable and close to the secret of Northton, four beaches so close by. These secluded white beaches are incredible, as well as the golden road, out of this world and the scenery ...we just love it and felt very lucky to being staying in such a special place. We knew it was not going to be hot, but having wet suits nothing could stop us from swimming in the clear blue ocean! At Scarista beach it was amazing as we spotted a porpoises, a Golden Eagle soaring over us and we had the whole beach to ourselves. The cottage has a lovely woodburning stove to cosy up in the evening; we felt so indulged for the week there. It was really nice being able to walk to the beaches, the sand really is golden and the sea turquoise and there really is hardly anybody there. We went sailing with Bart (Harris Outdoor Adventure) out on the ocean, have seen so many seals, we lost count, we simply loved it all! Goes September 2012
