The Yorkshire region

The Yorkshire region

Situated in the north east of England, the area has a varied landscape, ranging from rugged moorland and wooded valleys of the North Yorks Moors to quaint seaside resorts on the north east coast and rolling hills, rivers and waterfalls of the Yorkshire Dales.

The region is dotted with historical cities, castles and stately homes. The famous Lyke Wake Walk, Cleveland Way and Coast to Coast run through the region which is a haven for walkers and the area is also popular for cyclists. The North York Moors railway operates steam trains from Whitby to Pickering and has been made famous by it's connections to the Harry Potter films and the Heartbeat TV series as well as the spectacular scenery. Captain James Cook's connections to the area can be seen in and around the Whitby area and further afield and the famous Wensleydale cheese originates in the Dales. Local vet Alf Wight whose books and TV series were so captivating is celebrated at 'The World of James Herriot' museum in Thirsk.
