Location description from owner

The Scotland region

East Lothian is one of the most picturesque areas of Scotland. The County stretches from the eastern edge of Edinburgh to the waters of the North Sea. There is so much to do with the family in East Lothian, with miles of beautiful coastline, golden beaches, rolling countryside, spectacular cliffs, perfect for picnics, rock-pooling, or long strolls along the sandy bays. It also provides a playground for water sports activities from surfing in Dunbar to sailing in North Berwick. The coast is also the route for the John Muir Way, a long distance walk taking in the full cost of East Lothian from Musselburgh to Dunbar.East Lothian is also a golfer's paradise. Musselburgh Links is the oldest surviving golf course in the world, but the most famous East Lothian course is Muirfield, home to the Open Championship 14 times since 1892 and last held there in 2002, but will play host to the championship again in 2013East Lothian boasts connections to many Great Scots from Mary Queen of Scots to John Muir, from the Saltire to Whisky. The past is kept alive with rugged castles, historic market towns and the remains of ancient settlements. There are lots of places to visit, from castles, to farm parks to aeroplanes – big ones including Concorde!!• National Museum of Flight• Tantallon Castle• Dirleton Castle• Glenkinchie Distillery• Bass Rock• the Seabird Centre• North Berwick West Beach • North Berwick Misley Bay

North Berwick

The royal burgh of North Berwick is one of East Lothian’s most beautiful and popular seaside towns. If it is the great outdoors you're looking for we have it in abundance, with miles and miles of beautiful beaches, perfect for picnics, rock-pooling or long strolls along the sandy bays.Could there be a better destination for golf? North Berwick features three fantastic course and East Lothian has a further 19 courses offering choice to golfers of all standards. Come rain or shine there are plenty of top class tourist attractions to visit in and around North Berwick. At the award-winning Scottish Seabird Centre you can embark on an interactive wildlife adventure: control the interactive live cameras to zoom in on the 150,000 gannets that call the Bass Rock home or the puffins on the Isle of May National Nature Reserve.Boat trips leave the harbour regularly providing wildlife tours of the Firth of Forth and the many islands that lie offshore. In the summer months the town plays host to Fringe by the Sea; an extension to Edinburgh's internationally renowned Fringe Festival. It is an extravaganza that brings colour, excitement and vibrancy to the town.North Berwick Highland Games is held every August when the sounds of pipe and drum fill the air and visitors can enjoy highland dancing and caber tossing – a "Champion Scottish Day out". The North Berwick Pipe Band also performs regularly throughout the summer months.
