Location description from owner

The Scotland region

Drey Cottage is in the Galloway Forest Park within the Dumfries and Galloway region of S W Scotland where people are extremely friendly and life goes on at a steady pace. The Galloway Hills are famous for their beauty and they appear to change their colour from day to day. The area is generally quite warm benefiting from the Gulf Stream which is why there are so many wonderful gardens to visit.

Newton Stewart

The area is steeped in history with many abbeys and castles to visit with memorials to Robert The Bruce.
Cairnsmore is the second highest mountain in the area and is just 1 km. from the cottage. A walk to the summit provides fantastic views across the sea to the Isle of Man and beyond.

Bird watchers love it here where ospreys, red kites, buzzards, peregrine falcons and puffins can be seen and even the odd golden eagle.

Galloway Forest Park is one of the darkest places on the planet at night, which makes it a ideal place for stargazers in the UK.

The Galloway Forest Park has many lochs, burns and places of interest including the Red Deer Park and the Wild Goat Park. There are ranger led walks where you can see spectacular sights. Glen Trool is magnificent in its beauty and a famous battle ground where Robert The Bruce had success against the English Army.

The Forestry Commission have recently opened the 7 Stanes mountain biking routes throughout the forests and these are ranked as the best in Great Britain with different routes to suit all abilities. Mountain bike hire available.

Fishing and sailing can be enjoyed from the many harbours and the miles of beaches and coastline.

You will find many places providing good food from superb fish restaurants in Portpatrick to smaller tearooms where you can enjoy home made soup and a roll.

Amongst the numerous places to visit is the Castle Douglas Food Towm, the Kirkcubright Artist Town, the Wigtown Book Town and many more small towns and villages all with their own bit of magic.

You can even spend an evening at the otter pool where you will stand a good chance of spotting these wonderful creatures.

“One of our favourite holiday cottages in Scotland”

Cottage is well equiped and the owners very welcoming and friendly. A perfect location for walking and visiting places like Kirkudbright, Dumfries and Newton Stewart. Enclosed patio very useful for the dogs, and red squirrel watching, not to mention all the birds who visit the feeders. The bird and squirrel food is supplied by the owners. This was our second visit and we hope to go again.

“Beautiful cottage lovely and clean and well presented in a lovely location”

Reviewed 24 Feb 2013

Drey Cottage was lovely and welcoming from the moment you stepped inside with the table set with lovely china and a home made cake waiting for us after our journey which was a lovely homely touch. Jennie made us so welcome and had even emailed to say that we could get into the cottage earlier than shown on the website. We took our son and our airedale terrier with us and it was the ideal place for all. You could walk into the forest and the forest park was around the corner with a playground and a place to hire bikes. There are a lot of great places around this part of Scotland within a short distance by car. The cottage was so clean and was very well equipped. It was so nice to sit in the conservatory and watch all the birds and the visiting red squirrel. A great place to stay.
