Heron Cottage is a delightful detached cottage dating back to the early 1800's, situated in the attractive village of Newstead providing the perfect Scottish Borders self catering accommodation. The historic town of Melrose is just a short walk away where there are a wide variety of amenities and attractions, including varied range of specialist shops as well as quality restaurants, bars, and sporting activities, including the famous Melrose Rugby Sevens.

Heron Cottage is a beautiful detached period cottage that has recently undergone a complete renovation inside to offer stylish, contemporary self catering accommodation. Although the exterior of the cottage is traditional in appearance, it is in complete contrast to the modern accommodation that lies within. Immaculately presented throughout, Heron Cottage oozes good taste and boasts a beautiful sleek high gloss kitchen (including newly added filter coffee machine) and the luxurious contemporary bathroom even has 'his and hers' wash basins!

A fabulous wood burning stove in the lounge ensures a warm welcome awaits guests whatever the season. The lounge is fully equipped with a widescreen LCD TV with Freeview, DVD player and hi-fi quality iPod speakers. Due to its history and age the property is naturally quirky which adds to its charm with some limited height space on the first floor.

Heron Cottage is situated in the heart of Scottish Border country, an ideal base to explore the many nearby abbeys, castles and stately homes including the historic Melrose Abbey. Most countryside pursuits are available here or close by, including walking, cycling, mountain biking, fishing, golf, pony trekking, tennis, canoeing, shooting, exploring and much more. If you want to visit Scotland's capital city, Edinburgh is less than an hours drive away or why not take the newly opened train line from Tweedbank station (5 minute drive from Heron Cottage, with free parking!) - this fabulous service delivers you right into the heart of the city in around 45 minutes. Perfect for a day of quality shopping, sight seeing and sampling the varied cuisine on offer.

Hi Carol, It is very rare that we feel it necessary to respond to a guest review, but we must take issue with some of the comments made in your feedback. We work extremely hard to ensure all of our guests have an enjoyable stay and are very upset that you were disappointed with your time in our cottage. You have our contact details, if you had got in touch with us we could have rectified any issues that you may have had. The description of our cottage on the listing is as accurate as we can make it using the TripAdvisor system. Newstead is a 10-15 minute walk to Melrose and there are a number of routes you can take. We were not made aware of any special needs you may have that would not enable you to do this. We do not state that there is designated parking, in fact we make it 100% clear in our arrival documentation that there is on-street parking adjacent to the cottage. We have signage in place to discourage people from parking outside the cottage but unfortunately sometimes this is outwith our control. Nowhere in the listing or amenities do we refer to a garden, the listing states a private yard and patio. We understand there is an issue with the outdoor seating, during our last stay we made numerous trips to local garden centres to buy a replacement set but the items were not in stock anywhere. We plan to bring a new furniture set when we next visit our cottage in early-August. The cottage is over 200 years old and has some internal features that are not to everyone's taste - such as the stairs and low eaves in the upstairs bedrooms. We do refer to the quirky nature in the listing and the vast majority of our guests embrace this aspect of their stay. The rubbish bin outside does have the cottage name written on it, but it may have faded over time - this is the first occasion that a guest has actually made a negative comment about the bin! Our housekeeper normally removes all rubbish when guests leave the property anyway. Keith & Nicole

How do damage deposits work?

How do I edit my booking?

You can request to change the dates or number of people on your booking via the Manage your holiday booking page. To change your holiday dates use the Edit booking button. If you need to change the number of guests staying then send Keith & Nicole (the owner) a message.

If Keith & Nicole (the owner) agrees, they’ll send you a revised quote outlining the changes. You can review and accept/decline this from the Manage your holiday booking page. You’ll have 48 hours to take action before the revised quote expires.
