Description

Maen-Offeiriad is a 5 acre small holding with 2 self catering holiday cottages (Artist's Studio (sleeps 3) and Garden House (sleeps 4) on the lower slopes of Foel Drygarn (an iron age hill fort on the high ridge of the Preseli Mountains in Pembrokeshire) about 15 minutes drive from Newport. See our website for full details of both cottages.
Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence 2014!!

It's a beautiful romantic and peaceful place, filled with birdsong. The open hillside of the Preseli Mountains is five minutes walk away, with over thirty square kilometres of hill and moorland without roads. The stunning North Pembrokeshire coastline is fifteen minutes away by car. The nearest towns are Newport, Pembs (great beaches, restaurants, local produce) and the larger town of Cardigan, about twenty minutes drive away. We are located in the Pembrokeshire National Park, the only coastal national park in the country, and is amazingly rich in wildlife, from owls and red kites

Further details indoors

This cottage is a converted stone barn, formerly an artist's studio.

It has a sunny breakfast room with quarry tiles and former chapel leaded-glass window, a big open-plan living/main sleeping area with a woodburning stove, a characterful kitchen, shower room and separate toilet.
The main sleeping area is on the ground floor with a large double bed and a sleeping crog loft on the first floor provides 2 additional single beds, partially open to the main room. This area is accessed by ladders.

Further details outdoors

The cottages are set in five acres of gardens, copses and fields. It's very green and very quiet apart from lots of birdsong. Guests are welcome to explore our gardens and land. There's a beautiful walled garden that's a real sun-trap, and lots of nice picnic spots in the fields and under the trees.

Maen-Offeiriad (pronounced 'mine off-airy-add') means 'the priest-stone'. We've been told that the name refers to a large slab of Preseli Bluestone half-hidden beneath an oak tree, but no-one seems to know where the name comes from. The spot has been occupied for a very long time; at least 200 years. There is a very old stone pigsty next to the cottage that's a listed building!

“Delightful Artist's Studio cottage in a tranquil setting”

Reviewed 19 Jul 2015

I stayed here in the Artist's Studio cottage last October, for a few days with my girlfriend. Right from the off, the owners were very good at keeping in touch about the booking and were very helpful throughout the stay. We were greeted warmly and everything was clean and tidy when we arrived. We even had a little treat left for us in the kitchen (a welsh scone/cake thing)! Couldn't have asked for much more really. The accommodation was absolutely delightful, a real cosy little corner with great access to the Welsh hills and coast. The wood burner in the living area was great for drying out in front of after our rainy walks too! I would absolutely recommend this place; friendly owners, great location, proper cosy.

“Wonderful week in a beautiful, peaceful setting”

Reviewed 28 Jun 2015

We recently stayed in the Artists' Studio - and had a fantastic week. The Studio was very comfortable, set in a beautiful garden with lots of wildlife, including Jays and Woodpeckers. Tim and Norma were very hospitable and friendly. Good location for exploring this area of Wales. This is by far the nicest cottage we've stayed in over the years and we would definitely recommend it and go back.

“Blissful”

Reviewed 26 May 2015

Our second visit to Maen Offeiriad but first to The Garden House. A warm welcome from kind and thoughtful hosts, and a very relaxing stay. Everything we needed was on hand, and while it was a pleasure to be away from it all in a relatively remote location, it's not far to get to fabulous beaches and well-stocked shops. Huge variety of landscapes in a small area from craggy moorland hillsides, lush green valleys, imposing cliffs and sandy beaches. And a very comfortable home to return to relax in at the end of the day. We'll be back...

“Delightful cottage in a beautiful, peaceful location”

This review relates to the Artist's Studio. The Artists's Studio is a wonderful place to stay - cozy, comfortable, peaceful, very well 'stocked' and surrounded by the wonderful grounds which guests are welcome to explore and use. The log fire kept us lovely and warm in the cool evenings. The cottage is located at the foot of the Preseli Hills - a glorious location. You can walk straight up the hills from the lane at the bottom of the cottage. It's also an easy drive to Newport where there are some great places to eat. Tim and Norma were very friendly and welcoming, which made our stay all the more enjoyable. Thoroughly recommended if you're looking for a peaceful retreat, surrounded by nature and wildlife!

“Garden House - the perfect base to enjoy the delights of North Pembrokeshire.”

Reviewed 19 May 2015

We've just had our 6th visit to this lovely place. Garden House is comfortable, warm and well equipped. Norma and Tim are interesting and great hosts and knowledgeable about the surrounding area. It's a perfect retreat for those wishing to get away from busy lives!

“A wonderfully restful holiday in beautiful West Wales”

Reviewed 19 May 2015

This was our second visit to Maen -Offeiriad Artists Studio. We liked our week so much last year we came back for two weeks this year. Tim and Norma have created a reall cosy cottage set in beautiful gardens. This cottage is entirely suitable for couples with a four legged friend, and the location is perfect for walks in the hills, or runs on the many perfect beaches. The beaches close by are without doubt amongst the best in The UK. There are many places of interest to visit, and without doubt we will return very soon.

“Beautiful cottages in a stunning location - superb hosts”

Reviewed 18 May 2015

Garden House - The cottage is modern, comfortable and beautifully presented with everything you could possibly need. We felt immediately at home. The dogs loved exploring the grounds and the wonderful walks straight from the cottage. Tim and Norma are wonderful hosts and have so much knowledge about the surrounding area. Pembrokeshire really is a beautiful place and we thoroughly enjoyed our time here (even the dogs sulked when it was time to go home)

“Artist's Studio - a wonderful, relaxing break in a fabulous area with welcoming hosts”

Reviewed 26 Apr 2015

We spent a week in this wonderful spot and had a great time. The Artist's studio is compact but contained everything we needed for two adults and one ten year old boy. The kitchen was well supplied (even down to small amounts of tea and coffee), the conservatory area gave a great space for eating and the additional crog loft bedroom was perfect for a child (or two - we had a friend's son stay over some times and there was still plenty of room), it was almost like climbing up to a tree house at night - the stairs however might be a bit steep for a very young child. Also the loft space is only separated from the main living/sleeping area by a curtain so this studio would probably not be appropriate for two couples. I would recommend the other cottage on the same site for such a group. The garden was great for children (and dogs) to run around in and we were able to take advantage of the opportunity to light an open fire in the field and sit toasting marshmallows under the stars one evening. The location was ideal for access to the Preseli Mountains, with great walks and some iron age history. The owners welcomed us to the place and were incredibly helpful and friendly while still allowing us our own space to enjoy the garden and stunning area. They provided our son with the opportunity to play with their dog and help collect chicken eggs. We were really sad to leave at the end of the week and we would definitely love to go back.

“Even better second time round”

Reviewed 21 Apr 2015

We stayed in the Garden House. We rarely return to the same place twice but this was an exception. Tim and Norma are still great hosts, the cottage was still welcoming and equipped with everything we needed for the stay. The surrounding countryside is, if anything, even more beautiful in spring than in summer and our ten year- old boys had a brilliant time just messing about and enjoying the freedom.

“Charming tasteful welcoming hideaway in beautiful part of Pembrokeshire excelled expectations”

Reviewed 16 Apr 2015

I knew this was going to be a special place the moment we adventured up the track and drew up at our home for the week, which is exactly what it felt like after 7 days only without the stress! The Artist's Studio Cottage is a delightfully renovated space which housed two adults, one child and a dog with room to spare. You park up and the charming hosts immediately set you at ease with a perfect mix of friendly and helpful but without being intrusive so you really relaxed straight away. The cottage has a private sitting out area and a light and airy dining room which also acts as space to kick off wellies or sandy flipflops, hang coats etc and a door off reveals a compact shower room with the best power shower I've come across. Glass doors open into the main space which is light and airy by day then at night with the brilliant log burner going becomes warm and cosy within minutes (ample fuel provided.) The solid wood floors mean no worries about child spills or dog paws and are warm for feet and the bedroom area meets all needs entirely as does separate loo and the kitchen is really well equipped with every thing you could possibly want including those basics you might have forgotten or don't have on arrival like a hot drink or cooking oil. My 4 year old loved sleeping in the 'Crog Loft' which is up a ladder staircase and through a trap door and has ample room for two cosy single beds, suitcase etc - the teddies had their own bed what more could you ask for! After a few chats with Norma (host) about good walks or places to try we quickly settled into a delightful routine: quick walk up the track which pops out onto crags and moors of the Preseli hills, back for a coffee then pack up lunch and try one of the many wooded valleys filled with streams, mossy rocks, wild ponies and trees that look like they belong in Lord of the Rings, then hit a beach for the afternoon - so many to choose from - then we wound our way back to eat, drink and sleep. The garden is great to explore - no manicured suburban neat rows here but beautiful moorland simplicity and the birdsong is just magical. When you do want to give reality a look in the broadband was better than at home no problems at all, and although the TV signal dipped in and out a bit who cared - the boys was too absorbed trying to play the games thoughtfully provided anyway. There really is only one drawback to writing this review and that's letting everyone else in on the secret! Thanks Tim and Norma, we shall see you again.
